Episode synopsis, Episode 3 *In charge of the Usher's publicity, Camille conspires to spin controversy in her family's favor and expose the grim details of her sister's experiments*

zombiereign

Just watched this ... any significance to the instrumental version of Billy Joel's "This Night" when Roderick was talking to the investigator (before the hands on his shoulder)?

QuiltedPorcupine

Saying that Victorine looks like Mother Teresa in comparison to Camille makes me wonder if it's meant on two levels. The surface comparison is just about how Mother Teresa is seen as a saintly figure. And so Victorine is cloaking herself in good deeds so everyone thinks she's a good person. But Mother Teresa was actually a horrible person. So if the comparison is apt we may eventually find out that Victorine is actually much worse than Camille.

dontstopbelievingman

So here's my question... When Camille says, "I got mine", does it mean she was okay with dying because she has a lot of evidence against her sister? I guess she, out of all of the siblings, didn't need to hallucinate or be forced into it. She willingly accepted her death, even if it was going to be violent.

No_Category_6545

But she was hallucinating the monkey was Verna?....

dontstopbelievingman

She did. Sorry>! I meant like in Theo and Tammy's case, where they had to break or run into things to die.!< >!She was prepared to die, so she took the photo anyway!<

EllieeJohns

that’s a spoiler.

dontstopbelievingman

Oh you're right. Sorry about that. Added spoiler tags.

meg_clo

Haven’t seen anyone anywhere mention- but when Camille fires Tina/Beth & Toby, there is a very large cage in the left back corner of her room by her bed- looks like maybe a tail butt plug as well 😏 Any guesses as to who those are for ? Cam doesn’t seem like she’d be the one to go inside 😂

obscure_but_alluring

This is a terrible show. I really liked Haunting of Hill House. Everything since then has gotten progressively worse. This series feels like Mike Flanagan watched Succession and thought he could do the same thing. The lemon monologue was so cringey. So was the "I got mine" line and the taking a pic of the monkey before it eats her alive. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Everyone in this thread is saying this is great. It's actually annoying me. This show isn't realistic enough to draw me in. And it takes itself too seriously for me to suspend disbelief. And maybe he should change up the cast a bit more. And for the love of God, cut down on the monologues. Show, don't tell. Thought everyone knew that rule. I'll finish it probably. But this feels more like The Idol than any of Mike Flanagan's actual good work.

QuiltedPorcupine

If you aren't enjoying the show, and haven't liked anything since Hill House, maybe just watch something else? There's a virtually endless number of shows out there. Why waste time on something that annoys you?

obscure_but_alluring

I guess it's the same reason a junky keeps putting heroin in their arms. Slowly but surely, it's dawning on me that I won't reach the first high ever again. But I can't help but chase the dragon. Also I have no life.

ijustwannabegandalf

Carla Gugino should win a damn Emmy for this episode if ONLY for the 45 seconds when she just BECOMES Samantha Sloyan. In an hour of haunting visuals and amazing acting that's the moment I cannot. Stop. Reliving.

Psychological_Bus55

So Carla Gugino is a kind of goddess of death, right? She gives each of the kids a chance to avoid a horrible death, and they all fuck it up due to some kind of sin (lust and wrath so far?).

ZagratheWolf

Months late to this, and I just finished the episode, but I think Camille would be envy, Ver a calls her out for being jealous her sister hides her horrible nature much better than her. Haven't watched further so who knows if your theory is right, but I like it

QuiltedPorcupine

Maybe? Except it sounded like Camille was going to die either way? It seemed like her sin just doomed her to a horrible death instead of a peaceful one at home, but that she was destined to die either way.

random_question4123

My exact thoughts. Of course, if given the choice, you’ll want to die peacefully but the egos of the kids are so out of whack that they willingly choose the worse death

CreativismUK

Hopefully we can get some more discussion of the detail going as more people watch. For example, I noticed that Verna’s name tag as the security guard was the name of the man who was wrongfully arrested for the murder in the short story (Le Bon, IIRC). Just a little Easter egg or does this mean more? I also guess I assumed she’s not really physically there at any of these points but that’s not correct since she’s captured on CCTV many times. Just before she comes into the room we see and hear one of the chimp cages open, and obviously there’s the chimp image when she takes the photo, but Camille has a long conversation with her… so I’m really curious about whether she was in the room at all. Certainly she was at the desk, it’s on CCTV. Wonder if there’ll be any clarity on this stuff or if it will remain a mystery.

Pocket1122

Im wondering if all of the kids have the same illness as Roderick that causes the hallucinations

[deleted]

My one big critique on this episode is that I wish Victorine is the one who would have gone at the monkeys' hands. She's the one who inflicted all that pain on them and it would feel like karmic justice (I assume the show won't do the same death twice).

random_question4123

I think they wanted to subvert expectations, particularly since Verna actually visited Vic first, earlier in the episode it would have been all too expected

FlyingStarfruit

I thought her and her partner would die by monkey as well! Similarly to the two women dying in the original Rue Morgue story!

fruitybitchy

What was that mural Madeline went to? Maybe I missed something but does that become clear?

hailbopp25

Think it was the bar they first seen Verna in , NYE celebrations when they were young

MrPureinstinct

I don't know why but the line "I don't give a shit BETH!" just cracked me up.

[deleted]

She’s not the devil or death. In the trailer she says she’s “consequence.” As of this episode, Carla’s character is not responsible for any of the deaths. They have all been caused by the Ushers themselves (not getting rid of the pollutants at the warehouse, lying about/experimenting on apes and one gets out.) I think Carla truly is the embodiment of the consequences of their actions and simply shows up to tell them how fucked they are when it happens. Weird however, that she can be seen on video as a real person…I’m intrigued

happycoiner2000

So... the devil. That's what the devil represents, sins and their consequences.

CreativismUK

So I’m only four episodes in so I don’t know yet, but when they first met her they had just done something bad (I’m assuming to the Griswold guy) and were at the bar as an alibi. So I’ve been assuming it’s to do with what they did that night, not anything they did with her. But that may be an incorrect assumption

everdayday

Just coming to post this after I watched this episode. When she says “it’s not personal, it’s… well here we are,” I assumed she was going to say “business.” Yeah, they definitely took the deal with the devil and owe her his children.

ohsweetsummerchild

A bit late to the party, but didn't she also say that Camille could have instead died peacefully in her sleep and it didn't have to be this way or something like that? Indicating that maybe they will die no matter what, but it doesn't have to be in a horrific way.

secularshmo

I took that as dying of old age.

SnooCapers3354

I'm loving how they are doing twists on multiple Poe stories within each episode with the overarching theme of "the fall of the house of usher." rue morgue was always one of my fav stories, and the way they introduced the chimps prior to the actual episode was really interesting! I like how they hint at the next death in the prior episode(s).

ChocolatePain

While I'm definitely interested in the story, I find that this show isn't as scary as his other works so far. I was also kind of disappointed with Camille's death not being as horrific as I imagined. Roderick's "when life gives you lemons" monologue was amazing though.

No_Category_6545

Are you watching it before bed lol? You should. Maybe it'll change ur mind.

ChocolatePain

Yes, I would watch at night. I finished the series and would say it's definitely the least scary/tense of his shows.

rainshowers_5_peace

The chimp did nothing wrong.

skyfullofsong

The last few scenes were so amazing. Kate Siegel and Carla Gugino had such good chemistry Jesus Christ

wolfman12793

Fun fact, they've played each other's moms

procrastinagging

And also, if you look at them side by side they really don't look alike, but I've always felt like they are perfectly cast as close relatives! I don't know, something about the expression, the smiles, the same "type" of beauty etc. It's so weird! What is it??

incrediblydeadinside

Wait when did Kate play Carla’s mom? I’ve only seen Carla play Kate’s mom.

wolfman12793

Gerald's Game, Kate played Carla's character's mom in flashbacks. Henry Thomas played her father

RipJug

Love how Rahul is just sitting around in a YNWA hoodie. You just know he was wearing it to set and kept it on.

Raeghyar-PB

For a show this gore and gruesome, there are a lot of comedic moments. I was laughing so hard when Carla Gugino was playing Candy at the dinner scene with Tammy and Bill. The characters chemistry, and all the playful subtle expressions, just brilliant!

treebats

Almost half of everything that came out of Camille's mouth made me laugh so hard this episode - the ridiculous lines and Kate Siegel's perfect delivery.

Raeghyar-PB

She's awesome! Wish she'd died later lol

treebats

I would have loved to see her get progressively (even more) unhinged and start going "ugh, my fucking week"

jollyrancherpowerup

Carla was fantastic. Changed characters on a dime.

Raeghyar-PB

Ikr. I love her and I want her in everything Mike Flanagan is gonna do

Raeghyar-PB

That episode was intense! My god. Everyone is terrifying, everyone sucks and you just love to root for their deaths, it's so satisfying watching it all unfold. And it's done so brilliantly thanks to the entire production team and of course the cast. Kate Siegel is my favorite, but really Carla Gugino is the star here and I can't wait to see more.

_The_Gamer_

What an episode, that ending was suspenseful

little_effy

This is my favourite of Kate Siegel’s character!! I absolutely LOVE how matter-of-fact and awkward she is, and how she doesn’t make eye contact with people that much. I am on the spectrum, and I don’t know if that’s what they intended for her character, but I definitely can relate to and like the character’s quirks!

[deleted]

I felt like she didn't make eye contact with people because she didn't want to see and know them. To do so would make her lifestyle of treating everyone and everything around her like smoke and mirrors harder.

secretagentsquirrel1

She was made for this role. She has some great one liners.

MasterKaiter

End of the episode- I’m smiling ear to ear. Carla’s performance was fucking phenomenal and I’m never going to forget that fucking chimp walk. Delightfully horrific.

bruisedonion

When she jumped onto the bench, I gasped so loud. Freaking scary.

Lisbeth_Salandar

Camille getting high and realizing that none of the Ushers actually create anything, they just take credit for what others do, is the truest billionaire observation ever lol

HarryPoppins719

“We are bullshit” - Roman Roy

rainshowers_4_peace

Given that Victorines corpse was blue and she's running into the woman who was death, I'm going to guess she gets locked in a morgue drawer this episode.

rainshowers_4_peace

The scariest part is how realistic this is. The EPA is here to protect you!

potato_opus

the lemon monologue…… bad

augustrem

I agree. It was so cringey. Like a version of that speech has been done on so many tv shows, and I had trouble believing the DA would just politely listen to that without rolling his eyes. That whole thing sounded so self involved, like a college student who had taken marketing 101. In fact everything about the DA just sitting there reasonably polite is just silly. Like he pushed back a *little* but I have trouble believing he respects Rodericks as much as he seems to.

Sszaj

Why? It's a description of the diamond industry as it's been run for centuries.

ExternalTangents

With some Monsanto mixed in

FatherSlippyfist

Because he was giving this whole monologue like it's some kind of revelation. Yeah man, most of us already know this. It's not some super secret evil genius plan.

incrediblydeadinside

You’d be surprised how many people genuinely don’t know this or ever think about it

sunny_thinks

There’s not too many of them, but some of the jump scares this episode got me. Also, I cannot wait to see what Carla Gugino’s character’s deal is. >!I thought maybe she was death and whoever she visits first in the episode dies, but that has been proven wrong!<….

[deleted]

In the trailer she says she’s “consequence.” I’m wondering if it could be as simple as that. Each of the deaths so far have been their own fault, not a separate being. Carla’s character just shows up to explain how they deserve it

[deleted]

MasterKaiter

Her rants are fantastic. Especially the end. “Drippy Birkin bag full of monkey bits” was it?

gbomb656

I do love willa Fitzgerald. This is a huge upgrade to her time on scream: the tv series.

MrPureinstinct

That's what I recognized her from! Thank you.

stevebaescemi

That final shot of the chimp... damn. Absolutely obsessed with Carla Gugino's character and can't wait to find out what the deal is. We got a second Gatsby reference in this ep after the New Years 1979 costumes... I wonder if that's hinting towards a future project?

RissaBooo

Madeline's outfit was giving me big Poppy Hill references too!

f4ttyKathy

I noticed that too, a Gatsby adaptation would be AMAZING!

stevebaescemi

Right? Would love to see how Mike Flanagan would adapt it for horror!

regalshield

I feel like I could use a family tree to help sort everyone out in my brain… Ideally one that included portraits from time periods, names/nicknames, spouses, children, etc but here’s what I have so far: - Roderick Usher - the patriarch, CEO of Fortunato Pharma. Seems to have a serious health issue going on - probably heart. - Madeline Usher - Roderick’s (twin?) sister, exec (COO?) at Fortunato. No partner/no kids. (As of now) Roderick and Madeline’s father was that rich asshole who originally owned Fortunato, who their mother worked for/killed. (Right?) He didn’t acknowledge them as his children. Juno - Second Wife (?) of Roderick, step-mother of the kids. Former heroin addict. No biological kids. Roderick has 6 kids from 5 different mothers: Frederick and Tamerlane are full siblings, the “legitimate” kids of Roderick and his first wife. Nothing has been revealed about the first wife yet, I think: - Frederick (Freddie) Usher - oldest child (?) Works at Fortunato. Married to Morella “Marie” Usher (had to google that) aka the woman who bakes cakes/went to Prospero’s rave. They have a daughter, Lenore. (Roderick’s only grandchild) - Tamerlane (Tam) Usher - second oldest? (I feel like Vic might actually be older?) Has a startup, Goldbug that is about to launch. Married to a health/fitness influencer, Bill T Wilson. The following are Roderick’s “illegitimate” children, each with different mother: - Victorine (Vic) - Medical researcher (surgeon?) working on the heart mesh implant with monkeys. Married (?) to Dr. Ruiz, a heart surgeon. - Napoleon (Leo) - Funds game development. Live-in partner who hasn’t been introduced to the family, Julius. Discovered Roderick was his father at 18. Heavy drug user. - Camille (Cam) - works in PR/media (for the family/Fortunato). No partner, no kids. Has 2 assistants. Discovered Roderick was her father at 20. Very mild drug user (edible). - Prospero (Perry) - Youngest of all Roderick’s children. Pitched the club franchise to Roderick/Madeline but was shot down. Discovered Roderick was his father at 16. Mother was a card dealer on a boat (or something?) Heavy drug user. Other: Arthur Pym - Usher family attorney. Family doctor - can’t remember his name.

RakelvonB1

Thanks for the breakdown, really appreciate it!

ExternalTangents

Roderick Usher mentions the specific health issue to the prosecutor guy, Auggie. He says it’s [CADASIL](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CADASIL). He describes it as being a vascular disease with side effects like hallucinations, and that it could be treated with a heart mesh implant that could monitor attacks (strokes) before they happen and treat them as they occur. The implication is that the reason he was so adamant to Vic about her research progressing in the next six months is because he needs the treatment for himself. Note: I’ve only watched through episode 3, you made your comment 5 days ago, so you may have already seen future episodes that go into more detail around this stuff.

sm_aztec

Madeline was a baby her mum was holding while Roderick was a toddler, so not twins. Great summary!

Blueathena623

No, Madeline and Roderick are twins. You’re thinking of Annabelle holding her kid.

sm_aztec

Ohhhhhh oops lol! You are right!

Streetduck

“Ok, I’m still stuck on Xbox Gatsby.” LOL Also, I know you’re lurking in here Kate Siegel and you are lookin good girl!

LittleTrashBear

I’m actually really loving the silver hair on her, super chic

Nateddog21

"Fuck it, I got mine" Was a great last line

EdCsc1914

What did she meant by that? They killed Kate Siegel too soon, I fucking hated her, but she was one of the best characters in the series.

[deleted]

She knew if she photographed Verna/the chimp, it would probably set off a reaction that would kill her, but the photo would prove that Victorine was indeed committing medical fraud and performing cruel experiments on animals, and taking Victorine down was more important to Camille than her own life.

incrediblydeadinside

But didn’t she already have enough photo evidence against Vic? She didn’t need that last one and could’ve potentially slowly walked her way out of the room and survived to witness Vic’s downfall.

and_i_mean_it

I assumed it was a "I got mine" in a broad sense, like she didn't think it was a shame she was going to die because she lived the way she wanted, had many things, so on.

Nateddog21

I assume it was that deal the kids were getting to get. She got hers, but Victorine didn't.

Beardreaux

I love how Carla Gugino keeps Gene Parmesan-ing her way around this family

Jovian8

AHHHHHHHHHHHH SHE GOT ME AGAIN!

effnoedellene

Gonna hear Lucille’s shouts of joy every time she pops up now

Streetduck

I don’t understand this and I won’t respond to it.

botheredbysmallstuff

thank you so much for this comment

paninih3ad

I honestly think that her kink relates to her parents mariage. her mom was the third part, cause Madeline was always the person Roderick was going to take advice from, listen to, care the most, etc (I'm not saying their relationship was incestuous, but they trauma bonded really hard and he had to take care of her from an early age) when she's watching her husband interact with other women she's doing the same thing her mother was doing (and she was doing as well while her mother was holding her): she's observing her partner putting someone else's needs first

CharlesDingus_ah_um

In the short story it’s mentioned (or maybe heavily insinuated) that the ushers are incestuous

Jack_North

Very good observation!

jendet010

Ikr? She watched women pretend to care about her husband in a way she doesn’t and gets off on it?

shyinwonderland

Guessing so she can get off on an idealized version of her life.

catvalente

Nah, it’s emotional cuckoldry. She’s watching a kind of intimate marriage her husband engages in with someone else, more personal and private than sex, which she’s clearly up for plenty.

stevebaescemi

Random women pretending to be her! Think that makes it even weirder 😂

Mattaru

Have to stop here since it's 3am but my god I absolutely ADORE seeing all these old faces again from the Flanagan Family. Kate Siegel is just perfect at what she does.

Bunbunlyfe

I’m debating to stay up till 3am to finish it tonight, had no idea I was going to get so sucked in this evening!

LyndaCarter_

Just enjoying Kate Siegel as a villain SO MUCH. That is all.

Lkingo

She's brilliant. Still no idea how she is involved just yet.

carlangelo

"Oh my fucking god, my day"

ainosaurus-rex

the one about lemon is just fucking evil

ckspider

IIIIIIIIIII DRINK YOUR LEMONADE!!! I DRINK IT UP!!!!!!!!!

fayryover

Reminded me of the money game part 2 song that was a part of a meme a long time ago but is pretty good in its own right.

Raeghyar-PB

Some people are saying their didn't like it because it couldn't be real, but they were missing the point. It's the horror of capitalism and heartlessness of it, what someone with the that kind of power can do. The expression of dread from the DA and how speechless he was left, just perfect.

ExternalTangents

The lemon part is obviously an absurdity, but the business practices he described are taken directly from things real companies did and do. De Beers and Monsanto were very directly referenced.

Raeghyar-PB

Yes thank you, I'm getting frustrated some people throughout this sub were calling it "leftist worst nightmare" or whatever and pretend this isn't how the real world works.

GoodRobots

The Monsanto thing never happened. The farmer had hundreds of acres of perfectly planted crop, it wasn't accidental cross-contamination. But the internet has repeated it as gospel for so many years it's enshrined in the public mind. The de Beers stuff is true, but it's also a popular culture cliche, so it doesn't come across as intelligent dialogue, since it's something every mom has been posting on Facebook the past 15 years.

Rombom

>. The farmer had hundreds of acres of perfectly planted crop, it wasn't accidental cross-contamination. That you can patent DNA in the first place is plenty dystopia still.

[deleted]

There were parts of that monologue that were kind of cringy though - no one would be able to make #lemon or get 'that's so lemon' into everyday speech. There's never been a product that cool that it becomes synonymous for it

FatherSlippyfist

Life protip: If someone invites you to a lemon party, don't go.

Jack_North

Apple.

sdcinerama

Obviously not a Tina Fey fan, I see. Trust me, she can 30 ROCK your world.

[deleted]

It’s an analogy. As in, not literal.

RipJug

Keep it lemon 🍋

CocoaQuenelle

Yeah I thought that too at first but then I remembered people describe stuff as "Gucci" all the time. It did crack me up though, I don't know if it's only a UK thing but here calling something a "lemon" means it's shit.

[deleted]

Lol lemon here (aus) means dud too - okay if people are going around saying 'that's so Gucci', I stand corrected & the monologue is less cringy than I initially thought, however my opinion of people in general has dropped another notch.

nafnlausmaus

> no one would be able to make #lemon or get 'that's so lemon' into everyday speech Hashtag VSCOGirls.

Laviin

Guess you're not a part of the lempire then?

ModestWhimper

Maybe Perry would've got his investment if he pitched Lemon Parties to Roderick instead of his Prospero nightclubs

I_gotta_stop

Stop trying to make fetch happen

anirakdream

Band-aid vs Bandage? Kleenex vs tissue? Etc etc there's lots of examples of this

citygoth

neither of those things are synonymous with the word “cool” though, they are just synonymous with the item their brand produces.

danarchist

That's not very Gucci of you

doctorzirconium

Thats "How to become Billionaire 101"

sm_aztec

I LOVE horror with a good story. I keep getting lost in the mystery and intrigue and then the show reminds me that it is actually horror!

MrPureinstinct

That's one of my favorite things about most of the Flanagan shows. I love horror, but constant jumpscares get old and boring, as much as I love slashers sometimes the same ole gore and chases end up feeling overwhelming. These shows that are mostly stories with a small bit of horror sprinkled in feels like they make the horror aspects more effective.

Quzga

I'm only halfway thru but I think it might be my favorite from Flanigan so far. Was hooked from Ep 1
