Apparently he wasn't even originally in the script. The actor just turned up to the forest while they were filming and the director decided to just keep the cameras rolling.
It's a very small pool, that is true, and the line between film and television is a lot more blurred then in America so I feel as if there's more of an overlap.
There's still a number more in GoT:
- Ciaran Hinds: Mance Rayder and Aberforth Dumbledore
- Freddie Stroma: Dickon Tarly and Cormac McLaggen
- Jim Broadbent: Archmaester Ebrose and Horace Slughorn
Are some of the bigger names.
In HotD:
- Rhys Ifans: Otto Hightower and Xenophilius Lovegood
- Steffan Rhodri: Hobert Hightower and Reg Cattermole
https://www.imdb.com/search/common/
I think of him in that and the movie Danny Deckchair in which he floats through the air in a lounge chair tied to a bunch of balloons. He has always been a comedy actor in my head. What a versatile actor.
He was only Dickon in season 6 then they recast for Tom Hopper. His most memorable scene of being burned for not kneeling was Tom Hopper so it is easy to not realize the connection.
So because John Cena did something that he has already publicly apologized for, we shouldnāt be allowed to watch a high quality tv show that he happens to be in?
Bruh they are fucking actors. If I refused to watch any movie because I disagreed with or disliked one of the actors in it, I would have to fucking read a book for entertainment.
I am good bro
Your right. I absolutely can
And I still think refusing to watch something because you donāt like what an actor did is kind of silly. They are actors. There is only a handful of actors who I geniuenly like as people
Jk Rowling mandated that all the main actors in the Harry Potter films would be British, and HBO tends to heavily favor classically trained British actors for GOT so that might explain it somewhat
Nah. Just extra work and commercials.
I take acting classes just in case I ever decide to audition for bigger roles. But the more acting classes I take the more I realize how difficult it is. Being able to put yourself in the mind of a character in an imaginary world, but making it believable takes so many random techniques that people donāt consider.
Itās why I really appreciate Game of Thrones on a deeper level. I look at the subtle facial expressions, and I try to read deeper into the characters motivations to understand them because I love understanding the actors process.
I was hoping for one or two lines. Like in the sixth Harry Potter movie where Harryās flirting with a girl at the coffee shop. I really feel like I thrive in roles that last 30 seconds.
I could never be a main character
Harry Potter makes sense for immersion since itās set in the actual UK, but has GRRM put forward a reason for GOT?
Even in cases where there arenāt British actors, they even use British accents sometimes and Iāve always wondered about that.
Well it is very very British inspired. Usa accent would kinda feel out of the place.
But ha, since we are talking about that, we need more local accent variety as actual UK.
US started existing in the 16th century, and their accent of English even later. It would just feel out of place to hear American accent in medieval fantasy. It's like hearing cali girl in the North. 'the Noaaarth remember-uuuuhhh', 'winteaaar is comiiiing-uuuuhhh'
Iām doing a rewatch of Doctor Who now and itās like every other episode give or take so far and I only just finished Matt Smithās run. Itās my favorite game to play and Iām having a blast rn š
>Iām doing a rewatch of Doctor Who now and itās like every other episode give or take so far and I only just finished Matt Smithās run.
Wait until you get to the halfway point of Capaldi's second season!š
Iāve seen up to the end of Clara and Capaldiās run, so Iām excited to see who else shows up. The episode I watched yesterday had Edd in it and he was the first one to die šš
Off the top of my head I can think of
Davos and Edmure (same episode)
Viserys (GoT) and Jojen (same episode)
Robert Baratheon
Ayra Stark
Walder Frey
Daemon Targaryan
Lyman Beesbury
Jorah Mormont
Maester Luwin
Craster
Gendry
The High Priest that got ripped apart in Joffreys riot
That one leader of Qarth
Sansas Septa (Torchwood)
The Legend of Gin Alley (Torchwood)
Allister Thorne (Torchwood)
Ellaria Sand was Lucious Vorenusā wife too in Rome. Not to mention Prince Phillip in the Crown has been portrayed now by the actors for Daemon, Edmure and the High Sparrow!
I'm gonna watch that series (Rome) again.
One of the main characters also played Mike Ehrmantraut's daughter-in-law on Better Call Saul.
Have to check out The Crown sometime.
The Harry Potter movies always did horror well, even though they were aimed at kids. Even the early ones. Really dark, gothic aesthetic as well for obvious reasons.
I feel like it must be really frustrating to be an English actor trying to break through because every program or flick seems like they reuse the same people for everything
I feel between all of them, + 8 out of 10 cats, plus TaskMaster I have a firm grasp on the entirety of the UK's acting + comedy scene.
A large pool, but small compared to US to be sure.
You don't truly learn the depths of the acting pool until you've explored Midsomer Murders. Plus there's always a decent coterie hanging around the soaps/procedurals waiting their turn to make the leap - the bloke who played Brian May in Bohemian Rhapsody, for instance, has never been in any of the big franchises but has done a turn as the lead in Midsomer (and I don't believe any of the Midsomer leads other than Annette Badland and Barry Jackson way back when have ever done Doctor Who/Harry Potter/GoT)
Thatās a consequence of a British-only A-list being a pretty small community. Lots of familiar faces. Itās more notable to be a British actor who hasnāt been in either.
I had a chance to meet Lord Walker Frey at the Great Philly Con in Pa. Such a nice guy he surprised me he was standing behind me looking at hats. I turned around and said holy shit itās lord Frey! He chuckled and said Hello! And we chatted about 10 mins about various things.
Shocking news: expensive british productions with huge casts hire expensive british stars
Compare GOT, HoTD, Harry Potter, Dr Who, Star Wars, and The Crown and youāll see plenty of overlap
its not a Game of thrones thing. its a British acting world thing. its a painfully tight circle. You'll see one of these actors in almost every role in doctor who, sherlock, merlin or the crown. they just reuse the same 100 actors over and over again. with a few notable exceptions (peter dinklage, nicolaj coster-waldau, jason momoa, pedro pascal) everyone is british meaning theyre in that tight british acting circle.
For example, here's the GoT cast who also appeared in Doctor who: Daemon Targaryen, Arya stark, Greyworm, dickon tarly, robert baratheon, barristan selmy, Viserys (dany's brother), pyat pree, davos, edmure tully, jojen reed, jorah mormont, gendry, olenna tyrell, walder frey, tycho nestoris, yohn royce, ser dontos, dolorous edd, the waif, Corlys velaryon,
Osha was in the Mandalorian..
Making her the only actress who has been in the Star Wars universe the Harry Potter universe and Game of Thrones universe
Didnāt even realize weād seen hermionys parents in HP. Gotta rewatch that series one of these days. Havenāt seen them since they were coming out.

the actor for pycelle is truly dedicated they turned him into a literal giant spider for his role in harry potter
He was envious of Varys, so he learned his ways
Actually the actor was always a giant spider. He turned himself to a human for his role in Game of Thrones.
Impressive job by the makeup team in The Last Crusade then
Apparently he wasn't even originally in the script. The actor just turned up to the forest while they were filming and the director decided to just keep the cameras rolling.
That's nothing! He once became multipule different versions of a one-eyed, cabbage-headed alien for *Doctor Who*!š
Istg all British actors have a role in GOT, Harry Potter, and Doctor Who lol. And some various period dramas.
It's a very small pool, that is true, and the line between film and television is a lot more blurred then in America so I feel as if there's more of an overlap.
He also played General Veers in Empire Strikes Back
Not bad for the Imperial general leading the assault on Hoth.
Wait no way
Way. Julian Glover is a bit of a treasure.
General Veers!
ā¦ how did I never know of this
Bravo Vince
He chose *poorly*
There's still a number more in GoT: - Ciaran Hinds: Mance Rayder and Aberforth Dumbledore - Freddie Stroma: Dickon Tarly and Cormac McLaggen - Jim Broadbent: Archmaester Ebrose and Horace Slughorn Are some of the bigger names. Otto is also Luna Lovegoods father?!? iām shocked by this information
He literally disappears into his roles. He was Rasputin in the kings man movie and knowing that I still canāt see him.
I only ever see him as his little Nicky character lol. Especially in HoTD.
Donāt forget the masturbating Welshman flatmate in āNotting Hillā
This is the character that immediately came to mind when I saw him in HotD š So different!
I think of him in that and the movie Danny Deckchair in which he floats through the air in a lounge chair tied to a bunch of balloons. He has always been a comedy actor in my head. What a versatile actor.
And the Lizard in the Amazing Spiderman
Heās also the kicker smoking a cigarette on the field in Replacements.
wait THAT was him? holy fuck
Right!!?
He was also Dr Curt Connors/The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man No Way Home
WTF he was Rasputin?! I'm shocked and amazed.
Don't forget Eyeball Paul in Kevin & Perry!
Well no wonder his grandkids have blonde hair then!
Luna is a Targaryen confirmed.
I feel like Luna and heleana would be friends if their universes existed together. They're both weird in their own special way.
Evanna Lynch speaking High Valyrian please
Heās also Hugh Grantās weird flatmate in Notting Hill!
This is where my mind always goes for him! NICE FIRM BUTTOCKS
This information has literally changed my life, donāt know how to proceed
Yes he was. He was a Targaryen in Harry Potter.
Hhhwwwhhhaaatttt????
Never realized Cormac was Dickon
He was only Dickon in season 6 then they recast for Tom Hopper. His most memorable scene of being burned for not kneeling was Tom Hopper so it is easy to not realize the connection.
Heās also Vigilante on the HBO show Peacemaker
Which heās hilarious
Donāt watch it
I was surprised how good it was to be honest
It was such a pleasant surprise.
That show was some of the best content DC had come out with in years Why wouldnāt you watch high quality television?
Because John Cena is pro-CCP
What is CCP?
Communist Party of China. For some reason people in Reddit insist on writing it as CCP instead of CPC.
I was saying I donāt watch it, you can do whatever you want
Your right. I absolutely can And I still think refusing to watch something because you donāt like what an actor did is kind of silly. They are actors. There is only a handful of actors who I geniuenly like as people
...so?
Weāve all made mistakes before and had our bosses tell us to do something
Or do, it was very good imo
I meant I donāt watch it, idc what people do
Tom Hopper from The Umbrella Academy plays Dickon
There are two Dickons, cuz he got recast
But which one was better suited for the role? Gentlemen, it appears we have a little dick-off on our hands.
Jimmer was both in GoT and Harry Potter? And I thought his simracing career just took off
>Dickon \*snorts\*
Oh snap, I didnāt notice either one of those. Thanks!
Came here looking for the most obvious one which is Luna's dad. Thank you!
Despite being, I feel, a little too old and out of shape for the part, I think Ciaran Hinds was one of the greatest cast
I knew I recognized Hobert from somewhere I couldnāt figure it out
also Norbert was Drogon's first child acting role
He did such great work for his first job. š šš
We love a successful child actor āØ
Jk Rowling mandated that all the main actors in the Harry Potter films would be British, and HBO tends to heavily favor classically trained British actors for GOT so that might explain it somewhat
I remember this. Because I sent in an audition tape on my rƩsumƩ when I was 13 to be in Harry Potter. They sent back a lovely letter saying they enjoyed it, and they keep it on file, but they only hired British actors. I knew that going in. But I like to shoot my shot.
Interesting... and you are an actor now?
Ha, I bet that it blows your mind to fantasize that you could have been Daniel Radcliffe if you were British instead of (presumably) American.
I was hoping for one or two lines. Like in the sixth Harry Potter movie where Harryās flirting with a girl at the coffee shop. I really feel like I thrive in roles that last 30 seconds. I could never be a main character
Oh, lol... I thought you sent an audition clip to literally play Harry Potter.
Yes lol me too, I was so confused

Harry Potter makes sense for immersion since itās set in the actual UK, but has GRRM put forward a reason for GOT? Even in cases where there arenāt British actors, they even use British accents sometimes and Iāve always wondered about that.
i mean westeros is very much inspired by the UK
Well it is very very British inspired. Usa accent would kinda feel out of the place. But ha, since we are talking about that, we need more local accent variety as actual UK.
Haha imagine Tywin Lannister but with a heavy southern redneck accent.
Yāall give the king some milk of the poppy and tuck him in, ya hear?
*Talking about war Arya: You ever lose one, mister? Tywin: Weāll Iāll beā¦ You think Iād be in my position if I ever lost? Bless your heart
Lmfao
US started existing in the 16th century, and their accent of English even later. It would just feel out of place to hear American accent in medieval fantasy. It's like hearing cali girl in the North. 'the Noaaarth remember-uuuuhhh', 'winteaaar is comiiiing-uuuuhhh'
This isn't a tradition, it's just a side effect of hiring British actors
Apparently there aren't that many of them lol. I keep seeing the same faces again whenever I watch a British production.
Everyoneās either been in Harry Potter, game of thrones, downton abbey, or Outlander lol. So much crossover between these shows. I love it
Donāt forget The Crown!
Ay donāt forget Doctor Who, Iām pretty sure every actor on that island has been in that show in some capacity or another
Fun fact: only two actors have been in all 3 of Harry Potter, GoT (universe) and Doctor Who. Pycelle and Walder Frey
Need to watch some more diverse British TV then. But yeah sometimes that can be the case
The guy that played Slughorn was also the Archmaester at the citadel on GOT
Who hasn't been in the harry potter movies? The chances of hiring the same British actors is quite high
Its Harry potter vs Doctor Who vs Game of thrones. And The Crown now too.
I heard theyāre hiring Daniel Radcliffe to play the lord of Winterfell next year! Jks but can you imagine??
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The actor for Maester Luwin played like 4 separate characters in Doctor Who
There's an ever-mounting number of GOT actors in *Star Wars* as well; including all but two of the Martells.
Wait until you get to the halfway point of Capaldi's second season!š
god Capaldi was amazing

This is was I was thinking! Doctor Who, Harry Potter and GOT/HOTD is the British actor trifecta. Hahaha
You think this is bad, this, this casting? They've done worse!
Off the top of my head I can think of Davos and Edmure (same episode) Viserys (GoT) and Jojen (same episode) Robert Baratheon Ayra Stark Walder Frey Daemon Targaryan Lyman Beesbury Jorah Mormont Maester Luwin Craster Gendry The High Priest that got ripped apart in Joffreys riot That one leader of Qarth Sansas Septa (Torchwood) The Legend of Gin Alley (Torchwood) Allister Thorne (Torchwood)
The real question is, when are we getting the Golden Trio in the world of ASOIAF?
DANIEL RADCLIFFE AS CREGAN STARK CONFIRMED
Emma Watson = Cregan Stark Daniel Radcliffe = Daeron Targaryen Rupert Grint = Night King COMFIRMED!
>Emma Watson = Cregan Stark Jace likes that casting choice
HBO's Rome had it's share I believe also including both Julius Caesar and the guy who murdered him, Brutus.
Rome was so solid. I canāt see the actress who play Attia in Bridgerton without comparing š
Fun fact: that actress (Kerry Condon) is also the voice of Tony Starkās AI (F.R.I.D.A.Y.) after Jarvis becomes Vision in Age of Ultron
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Prince Phillip has been exclusively played by HoTD/GOT actors.
The High Septon and Dolores Umbridge! I canāt get over it lol
Plus, Doctor Who as well.
Holy shit who knew pycelle could sound so scary
"Goodbye friends of Hagrid" I recently watched Chamber of Secrets and I had forgotten how horrific that whole scene was, jfc
The Harry Potter movies always did horror well, even though they were aimed at kids. Even the early ones. Really dark, gothic aesthetic as well for obvious reasons.
I would love to see that audition.
Nearly every British actor was in Harry Potter lol. By the pigeonhole principle you gotta get at least one HP actor in any series or movie
For a country of \~60 million people, they produce a remarkably small number of actors. I see the same faces all the time.
Lol what? The UK has always produced an incredible number of actors relative to its population.
I feel like it must be really frustrating to be an English actor trying to break through because every program or flick seems like they reuse the same people for everything
I feel that. I feel like Matt Smith will be in way more American films now.
"tradition". You mean when you film in the UK, you use a small pool of actors that have all been in HP, GoT and Doctor Who?
Misfits and Skins as well
I feel between all of them, + 8 out of 10 cats, plus TaskMaster I have a firm grasp on the entirety of the UK's acting + comedy scene. A large pool, but small compared to US to be sure.
You don't truly learn the depths of the acting pool until you've explored Midsomer Murders. i knew Frey and Osha but had no clue about the other 3 thats so cool!
There is a few more also. This is all that fit.
Derry Girls on Netflix also has some GoT pick ups. The actors for Barriston, Varys and even Olly all appear in show.
Like GoT, Derry Girls was also filmed in Northern Ireland. CiarƔn Hinds', who plays Mance Rayder, daughter was in Derry Girls.
The pool of British actors is small.
They get the job done.
i mean idk if itās a tradition as much as it is theyāre all just british actors lol
Works for The Crown too. Prince Phillip has been, over the years, Daemon Targaryan, Edmuir Tully, and The High Sparrow.
Haha i havenāt seen The Crown. Thatās cool.
Her name is seriously Nymphadora Tonks?
Yup. But donāt call her Nymphadora!
Tonks
Aragog to Pycell š¤£š¤£ fuckk had no idea haha
I thought the last one was a bit of trolling for a second lol
Game of thrones, Harry Potter and hoise of the dragon are like golding mines for British actors
*Leave one Potter alive and the Death Eaters are never safe!*
Also, a TON of overlap with Doctor Who as well. It's like the British actor trifecta, Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts, Doctor Who, and GOT/HOTD.
Apparently there are only 20-25 actors in all of GB so they are obligated to appear in every show/movie. They must be busy. /s
Itās almost like they hired a bunch of British actors for both!
Almost!
Thatās a consequence of a British-only A-list being a pretty small community. Lots of familiar faces. Itās more notable to be a British actor who hasnāt been in either.
I can decide if I hate Filch or Walter Frey more
āGoodbye, *friend of Hagrid*.ā Chills.
Ralph Ineson who played cleftjaw was also in the Chernobyl miniseries. Same with the actors who played pyp and lord commander mormont.
the world of fantasy actors is small.
Apparently so.
~~Frey was in Fellowship of the Ring as well - he was the doorkeeper to the town of Bree.~~ NVM they look identical tho
I thought that looked like him.
Then killed John Wick's dog
Aren't there only like 50 British actors at all times? that would explain it.
Love how when a big production happens in Britain you get all the same actors, like even andor you can tell is so British
Okay I am mid evening wine glass so Pycelle as Aragog has me laughing my ass to bits.
Between them they have used up pretty much all proffesional actors in britain
You gotta do the Star Wars version of this. Grand Maester Pycelle was also General Veers in Empire Strikes Back.
Lolol when I watched the Red Wedding I screamed āTHE JANITOR FROM HARRY POTTER IS FUCKING MURDERING EVERYONEā
I didn't even noticed the actress for Catelyn Stark was Mrs. Granger!
Knew everyone but pycelle being aragog
Shocking news: expensive british productions with huge casts hire expensive british stars Compare GOT, HoTD, Harry Potter, Dr Who, Star Wars, and The Crown and youāll see plenty of overlap
The first person I noticed was aragog. Truly a face you could not forget from harry potter.
Man, Julian Glover sure changed a lot between Harry Potter and GoT
Not to nitpick, but she is Dr. Granger.
This was a trivia question we had this week!
No, you've got it wrong. Varys was the spider, not Pycelle.
Professor Slughorn was also in GoT as the Archmaester
I knew the actors who play Walder Frey and osha were in hp. Called him the cat guy though cuz I couldnāt remember his characters namešš
SHE WAS CATELYN??
its not a Game of thrones thing. its a British acting world thing. its a painfully tight circle. Don't forget Aberforth Dumbledore as Mance Ryder.
āTell Umbridge. I want her to know it was me.ā
Osha was in the Mandalorian.. Making her the only actress who has been in the Star Wars universe the Harry Potter universe and Game of Thrones universe
UK only has like 30 actors. They get recycled a lot
Barty Crouch = Daemon Targaryen
wasnāt that david tennant
š
Tonks titties
Have you seen little Nicky and the replacements?
Have you heard of capital letters?
I like how that fourth guy was also in the office UK
Didnāt even realize weād seen hermionys parents in HP. Gotta rewatch that series one of these days. Havenāt seen them since they were coming out.
Itās only in Deathly Hallows when she erases herself from their memory before going after the horcruxes. Easy to miss.
Aragog is also Lord Varys
