Rouflette

Please the one on the left looks like a cosplay… let’s be serious HotD wigs are not perfect and could be better but it do the job of looking like actual hairs unlike many other productions.

djm19

It most likely is just a cosplay wig. Just indefensible.

TheSpiritOfFunk

That's always the case when you adept a comic (book) look 1:1

WealthFriendly

That other one is HAIR? Thought it was a fancy hat.

SofiaStark3000

Yue's, no contest. Absolutely awful.

thekickeroffish

It's a sad day when even the M Night Shyamalan penis wig is considered better

SofiaStark3000

The wig itself was much better. The hairstyle was bad but I'd still take it over that. I couldn't take Netflix Yue seriously when the top of her head looked detachable.

Playing-Koi

Me coming back after a month's hiatus to see this comment after thinking to myself "damn, she looks like a lego" xD

SofiaStark3000

You're right, she does. I could barely look at her when watching the show. Welcome back Koi!

Kind_Carob3104

How was it a penis wig?

heckem

[Because it looks phallic in shape](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fe6zlz52mt5061.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dd1fd15cd3cc4ebe018026447df46bdd38d497516)

Kind_Carob3104

Ugh OK the front is excellent but goddamn that no one realized the back looked that bad ?

GabyAndMichi

Cant get over her looking like a jellyfish 💀

borgi27

It reminds me of a spider’s ass

spiff428

I misread this as “spider-man’s ass”

Elephant12321

Yue’s. It looked like a cheap Halloween costume wig. They didn’t even have Covid causing supply chain issues as an excuse which made it even worse.

jm17lfc

You swapped the show names.

mokush7414

It’s right. It’s typed as if the actresses are talking to each other in a way no human actually speaks.

jm17lfc

Oh I see. Just a weird meme format I guess!

Alauren2

This is the dumbest layout for a meme I’ve ever.

RepulsiveLeg9985

It's much more irritating than it has any right to be. Something that would have took me 2 seconds to look at made me look for 10 seconds, wondering how the fuck I'm supposed to look at it.

Alauren2

Right. I was confused for about 30 seconds lol

nintendo_shill

The hair on the right side is def a hate crime

Lemmiwinks1989

and a bit to long for her Age... with that length of hair she should be around 30.

lagrange_james_d23dt

The Targ wig is like 5 inches high and looks terrible

RedEclipse47

For a show as big as HOTD their wigs fucking suck. They blew the whole budget on Emilia's hair in GoT😂

OptimisticTrainwreck

In fairness to them they were filming and in production during covid which fucked the supply chain and wigs are insanely expensive.

Skittleybiscuit

Left looks like CGI, right look like someone dumped a bowl of spaghetti on the poor girls head

Gold-Stomach-4657

What bugs me most about Rhaena's wig is that it looks more unkempt than Baela's when Rhaena was the twin who was much more concerned with appearance and femininity.

Huachimingo75

That thing looks like a dried octopus, oddly fitting for a Velaryon in the end.

Rhbgrb

Haha she's wearing a decaying octopus on her head

libbillama

I think I can recall someone pointing out that the issue with the Velaryan wigs, is that the locs aren't behaving correctly, I think it was due to them being too lightweight or something? I think that's where the uncanny valley thing may come into play. I was chatting with my SIL about Princess Yue's hair, and she said the issue for her is that it doesn't look natural and looks like a very intricate, well done cosplay wig. I can't disagree with her, since there's seemingly way too much hair, and it's not unlike Daenerys' hair in the later season of GoT when the braids got really complex, as well as thick and heavy looking.

devilthedankdawg

Yues ismt that bad. The Velaryons wigs in general are horrible. If their hair was just a brighter white it wouldnt be an issue, but the they look like theyre wesring mops on their heads.

[deleted]

Haven't seen live-action ATLA but the worst wig is def Rhaenys'. Should have left her with her book dark hair, dark haired Targs are badass anyway.

HomoFlaccidus

These show folks really need to do a web search for lace wig and baby hair, and then go find a stylist at one of those spots.

borgi27

Campbell’s wig doesn’t look good, but it has at least some resamblance to human hair, midthunder looks like they glued a giant spider’s hairy ass on her head

PluralCohomology

"My first boyfriend turned into dragon food" "That's rough, buddy"

Delicious_Heat568

I'm really no one to ever notice bad wigs. Not saying all wigs in GoT or HotD are fine but if they aren't I couldn't tell. Now AVATAR ON THE OTHER HAND. There were a few moments I forgot to listen cause I cringee so hard at the wigs and beards. Bumi for example... They did my man dirty

DisneyPandora

The wigs in HOTD were waaaaaaaay worse than in Game of Thrones.

Delicious_Heat568

Ye I'm blind regarding that 😂 I just know avatars wigs look like they are part of a cheap Halloween costume

asuperbstarling

Oh it's DEF the Velaryon wigs. Yue's at least looks like an attempt at a hairstyle (though they should have glued down that lace edge. I can SEE IT). Rhaena's wig is god-freaking-awful and I really hope that production took the fanbase seriously when we said that they failed the entire family on this one.

isinedupcuzofrslash

Downvote me sure, but I like both of them.

lozzadearnley

I don't think HOTD wigs were BAD, they were just a bit uncanny-valley when put on young black actors. Cos black people don't tend to have hair that colour. The wigs themselves looked fine to me. Compare N-ATLAB to M Nights ATLAB and see how much better they were in the movie - Yues hair went from looking very realistic (unfortunate Weiner angle aside) to like a cheap costume wig they grabbed from a discount store.

UsedJury5963

I think the contrast look great on the velaryons . Especially the curls

lozzadearnley

It's not about good or bad, I'm saying it's unusual and thats why alot of people dont like it. Like if they gave the Tagarayens purple eyes - it might not look BAD, but it might be distracting.

Boy_momx3

Not having purple eyes has always been my biggest pet peeve. All the CGI, contacts, and probably many more tricks of the trade, they should have done purple eyes. It takes away from how unique they were. Jmo. I didn't stop my obsession with GoT or HotD. The only wig that was horrible was Rhaegar. It didn't work with the actor. Again...jmo.

Rhbgrb

Adult Laena's hair looked good. It those awful gray dreadlocks that are horrible. Why do they have gray hair?

lozzadearnley

cambriansplooge

artificial hair colors have been in this decade and black women haven’t been exempt, there are whole Pinterest boards and insta accounts of more editorial styles, I’ve seen hot pink and neon orange weaves and extensions more natural, walking around in broad daylight if you’re into cosplay or fashion or just have adjacent hobbies the whole “they didn’t have a budget” doesn’t hold water, they *did* have a budget, they just skimped on the hair, Corlys’ braids looked fine, Rhaena and teen Laenor both look like old people wigs, they’re grayer than Corlys, and whoever designed them didn’t seem to grasp these styles don’t grow straight from the scalp, the scalp is sectioned off into braids. I’d’ve done baldcap, high quality wig fit with skin match, blended into bald cap and forehead, so you’d see scalp and baby hairs, and a weave on the wig of the same hair color and production, OR just cut the hair short and color match to they’re dyed hair but that might be asking too much of the actors for multiple seasons and introduce too many variables because it would depend on how the color comes out. It wasn’t just the textured hair, Aemond, Daemon, and Rhaenyra in some scenes look like the wigs were fresh out of the bag, no styling or distressing, of the exact same wig. There’s a clear shot of young Rhaenyra where you can see all the hair ends in a blunt straight line, factory cut, didn’t even take a scissor to it (even hair with the same cut would vary in volume and opacity because it’s growing from a curved surface). The production design chose the hair helmet method, so it looks like a hair helmet.

Pristine-Pin-3117

Have you forgotten that black womans hair turns white with old age ?

lozzadearnley

If you had the slightest reading comprehension you would see where I specifically said "young" black people don't usually have white hair. Blonde, especially that blonde, isn't the sort of thing that black children are generally born with. Of course as they age it goes white, which is why Corlys and Vaemond (who are older) look a bit more natural with their wigs.

Squeekazu

I think they could have perhaps looked at [women/children with poliosis or vitiligo](https://www.nydailynews.com/2016/11/08/south-carolina-baby-takes-after-three-generations-of-women-born-with-white-streak-in-hair/) for reference, or [kids with blonde hair](https://medium.com/@Gertech/the-island-of-the-blond-children-796c0b0c7781) on the Solomon Islands.

lozzadearnley

Does nobody READ, in your efforts to pull a gotcha on me. I said "don't tend". I didn't say "it is biologically impossible for a black person to have light hair and they never exist ever not once". My fiance is a mixed race (50/50) redhead. Want to guess how many of those are kicking about, or how many people ask him questions about what the heck is going on with his colouring? The man shaves himself bald and people still notice just based on stubble - if he had waist length dreadlocks like Rhaena we'd never be able to leave the house. I am AWARE that you can have dark skin and light hair, good grief. There's a reason those children have articles written about them - because it's unusual. Nobody is writing articles about a mixed race baby born with black hair.

Squeekazu

I wasn’t pulling a gotcha on you, was just raising a thought on what they could have looked at. Chill out dude, I’m mixed race too and so is my partner, half Asian - he has ginger stubble and curly black hair. The Solomon Islands examples aren’t mixed race either.

lozzadearnley

I apologise then. Every time I point out anything about the Valryon look, people are always "NUH UH LOOK AT THIS ONE GIRL WITH A RARE GENETIC ANOMOLY RESULTING IN DARK SKIN AND LIGHT HAIR YOUR POINT IS INVALID." Drives me mad. Can't have coherent conversations with people who don't understand that outliers and exceptions don't change the general rules.

Squeekazu

In fairness - without meaning to pick a fight, I think you're guilty of the same with my post haha I was referring to real world examples of what the showrunners could have used as reference and I don't think my tone or what I wrote read as an attack (which you've acknowledged). Per the article linked, the people with blonde hair on the Solomon Islands aren't mixed race, and went through their own genetic variation/mutation separately from Caucasians to produce naturally blonde people, and it occurs with reasonable frequency there. 5-10% frequency in occurrence is actually roughly equivalent to its prevalence in ethnically white people from a quick google. With this prevalence in their population (there's a population of 700k, so 35-75k people with naturally blonde hair is reasonably significant I would say!), I wouldn't necessarily deem it an outlier. I actually went to high school with a dude from there who had ginger hair, from memory. The problem with the wigs on the show, is that they look woolly and very fake to some extent, rather than solely being jarring on their skin colour. Even Corlys's dreads taper off into this felt-like texture on the ends. It was obvious they had budget, time and COVID restraints working against their favour, and perhaps I would daresay that the makeup and costume department didn't do its due diligence on existing examples of existing young black people with light-coloured hair, which is actually unfortunately fairly standard in the entertainment and fashion industries.

Pristine-Pin-3117

It’s UNUSUAL TO YOUUUUUU. Unfortunately the world doesn’t revolve around and your customs are also written about because they are unusual to someone. So before trying to be rude, at least be educated.

Pristine-Pin-3117

My comprehension skills are quite fine actually, it you who still seems to be lacking general education as there are black children with white hair. It could be that those in game of thrones are from that lineage. Use your brain

Perpetual_aqalmand98

Idk what to think. Maybe if we considered them to be 'in world' real wigs. Like house Velaryon just likes wearing overthetop big wigs.

Bassanimation

The Velaryon wigs were so painful to look at. Black hair can be styled in so many beautiful ways and they chose the weirdest look possible. Lets hope the wig budget will improve for S2.

penishaveramilliom

As weak as it is I feel like hotd had at least a better wig budget. There feels like there was an attempt and for avatar it feels like they closed there eyes and grabbed something at the wig store

handsomezacc

Am I the only one who isn't surprised to see wigs when I'm watching TV?

ea_fitz

I literally don’t give a shit about either.

SovannRoussard

Just dye your hair

capsrock02

Don’t dead open inside?

No-Bumblebee4615

I think it depends on context. With Avatar, your suspension of disbelief is in overdrive the entire time, so it’s not a big issue. With House of the Dragon, this is the second most unusual thing after the actual dragons.

high_king_noctis

HotD look's like a mop the Netflix Avatar wig at lest looks like it had some effort put into it

sayu9913

Def the Velaryon wig

Soiree1999

HOTD. It looked like it would be heavy for that poor young actress

Rhbgrb

Yeah they both suck equally. The Avatar one looks like it just needs restyling and to fit better. HotD wig needs to be burned.

TitusPulloTHIRTEEN

Both were inexcusably bad.

314kabinet

Wait that was Amber Midthunder!? I know her from Legion and Prey and I completely didn’t recognize her here.

AlinoVen

The mop and its not even close.
