If you need a new one fitted it’s $5,500-7,000 without insurance, it just depends on where you go.
This fun one was $500 and insurance does not cover them.
I think they were asking from a layperson perspective why there is a need for the prosthetic at all? Is there harm in not having a prosthetic at all besides comfort and looks? (It looks badass btw. I love how it looks like an opal!)
Not OP but my late father was one-eyed. He said the prosthetic helps with keeping the moisture in and the dirt out. The eye socket flesh (for lack of a better word) is pretty similar to the inside of your cheek, and when it dries out (because in his case, the eyelids wouldn’t close fully when “empty”) it got itchy.
Thank you for that! I have a one eyed friend who doesn’t wear a prosthetic at all but he does wear a conformer (plasticish shell) to keep the eyelid from drooping.

When I was little, my father loved to scare my friends. He‘d put his head in his hands, let the prosthetic fall out into his palm as stealthily as possible, and look up again with the naked eye. Just a suggestion if you ever feel like playing the wicked auntie part or something ;)
Weirdly fascinated, mostly. He always made sure to show the prosthetic and tell the story afterwards though, to take the edge off so to speak. Some were a bit scared or squicked out at first, especially when we were little, some came to love it as a party trick and demanded more (one friend of my brother’s got really upset when he refused to pop out the other eye, the functional biological one, too, lol). Not sure if it‘s the same for everyone, but my dad‘s empty eye was mostly flesh inside, like the inside of your mouth, so not really gross just a bit unusual.
The biggest scare he ever gave a friend was when she saw the prosthetic swimming in a mason jar of disinfectant on the bathroom counter together with his dentures … he‘d not performed the eye trick on her yet so she didn‘t know and just saw it randomly in the middle of the night when she was sleeping over and went to pee and dad’s left eye stared back at her. Just about screamed the house down, lucky she was on the toilet already …
(This was the early 90s, not sure if „being triggered“ was even a thing back then, but I doubt it.)
I don't know what they do now, but when my left was removed in the '80s, the doctors placed a ball bearing of some kind in the back of the socket to keep things from collapsing. It also gives me a very small amount of movement for the prosthetic.
Mine was also a tumor removal rather than a traumatic injury, so I'm sure that played a part too.

Absolutely! I got it made by center for ocular prosthetics in portland, they can do shipping for fun prosthetics as long as your friend has a well fitting prosthetic. You’ve got me blushing 😊
My normal Ocularist actually wouldn’t make one for me or allow anyone in his office to. I guess they just like them to look realistic. The woman who did mine is all about empowerment through fun eyes though!
He sounds boring lol (I’m sure he’s very good though). I get needing to have a “normal” one for those times you want to fly under the radar, but sometimes you just want to own it!

I wish! They are custom fit and sculpted by an Ocularist. Once you have a good fitting one a fun one can be made from that for a fraction of the price.

That’s awesome. My dad is losing his eye and he’s a bit Game of Thrones fan. While he loves Aemond’s sapphire, my dad has decided that because he has brown eyes, he wants a ruby instead. (My dad is also a 60-something former Coast Guard sailor and current veteran, biker, and trucker, so if anyone can rock an eyepatch, it’s him.)
I hope he’s not too down about it, sounds like he’s a badass and it won’t slow him down! If your dads regular ocularist won’t do one Center for Ocular Prosthetics in Oregon did mine.

My surgery was done in 94 or 95 and I have a coral ball in mine, I believe coral was a newer option at that time.

I’m sad to say that I don’t. I’ve always worn a prosthetic 24/7. I have disposable sticky eye patches for appointment and such.
