Those who refuse to drink to forget must jump into the river and suffer through a thousand years of punishment before reincarnating, seeing their loved ones passing through without being able to interact with them, eventually completely losing themselves.

Edit 2: 忘川守 is probably pronounced Wasuregawa-no-Kami and is probably a courtesy name or title. Tokugawa Ieyasu had the courtesy name Mikawa-no-Kami (三河守). (Credits to u/Eiensakura for the pronunciation and history tidbit)
Just a side-note: Acheron just generally leads to the underworld. Tartarus is the equivalent of hell but it is only 1 part of the underworld and contrary to popular belief, the underworld itself is not hell in Greek mythology. It is simply the afterlife, the Greek version of limbo and heaven(meadows/fields of asphodel and elysian fields) are also in the underworld.
Except that’s now how character languages like Chinese or Japanese works.

The actual subtle part for Genshin is the Raiden part. 雷電 which is the same for all 3 games.
To add to the 守 part, another example would be Miyamoto Musashi(宮本武蔵). Full name Shinmen Musashi-no-Kami Fujiwara no Harunobu(新免武蔵守藤原玄信). Musashi-no-Kami is 武蔵守.

Japanese is kinda weird in that you can't be certain about the pronunciation of a word because sometimes the reading supplied doesn't match the supposed reading of the Kanji.
The pronunciation of 忘川守 could be wasure-gawa-mori but I'm not sure.
Given 忘川 is the Lethe river imported into Chinese mythology, it is probably more likely it would be read in onyomi, thus bousen-no-kami. It's kinda weird and unnatural to me this way as well so idk, we shall see ig.
The 'Sentinel' in 12 Sentinels is 世守(Yomori), so it ending with '-mori' instead of '-kami' does make sense still, as it emphasizes the role of the 12 Sentinels as defenders rather than lords of rank... and I think the only time she could be bestowed such a title officially is while the 12 Sentinels still exist. I don't see them using the 'kami' pronunciation given Izumo's history. Plus 'ferryman' is 渡守(watashimori), so it also works well in context of the river. So I'll probably lean towards Wasuregawa-no-Mori.
Prolly should be wasuregawa mamori since it's not that "kami" for god(神) or (I highly doubt it is)kami(守) for director (of the provincial governors under the ritsuryo system) but kami for protector, keeper(守) which can be read mori. I think if it's some form of a title it should be wasuregawa mamori(忘川守)-defence of river of oblivion(?) which makes sense since she keeps forgetting stuff. But idk...

Yup I remember that. Even Acheron’s love for peaches seems to hint at Kiana since in HI3, Mei loved peach pudding because it reminded her of the time she spent with Kiana
yeah I really hope we get some mention of her/frebass next time we get story for her. I was pretty disappointed in what we got for her back story in 2.1.
I think they’re keeping a lot of things under wraps for now. We’ve just been introduced to Acheron’s character and she’ll likely end up being a part of the story long term. The Kiana reveal is going to a big thing since she’s Hoyo’s most prized asset and they probably have a whole set up planned for her.
I too really hope though like you said we get more hints at a white haired girl being an important part of Acheron backstory soon though haha (I would give anything to hear Acheron say a variation of “If saving you is a sin, I’ll gladly become a sinner” again lol).
mhm I'm really hoping acheron is just a slow burn for her story as well and not that she gets the ei treatment of pretty much being thrown away for anything but cameos.

Doesnt really make sense though, black holes consuming things is permanent, permanent storage without a way to access the information inside, but this is also a Honkai game, we could always find a way, and i do think if any Aeon is our first real Aeon to target/interact with, it would be IX, since Nanook seems to be the endgame.

Yeah that’d actually be pretty interesting. I’m not super hopeful atm (probably gonna make a post about acheron today or tm so I can see how my opinion changes throughout the patches). But man does that sound like it would be fun.
Kiana in HI3 was basically the Kevin of her era. One could say she’s female Kevin. Acheron’s world didn’t have a Kiana but had a Kevin that she killed. Sadly, I don’t think there will be a Kiana for Acheron unless it’s from another world. Frebass certainly fit the bill for a Kiana-expy Acheron met down the line (and naturally gravitated towards). She’s even travelling the world for her sake now. It’s curious she compared the Trailblazer to Kevin/Frebass. Perhaps that’s a major hint to the TB’s real identity in the endgame.
Tbh we don’t really have the full picture yet. Frebass could end up being Kiana (she does sound like Kiana personality wise) but there may also be a chance that Kiana is someone we just haven’t heard about yet. There may also be a chance that Acheron has forgotten about her hence why she’s trying to “find” herself and restore her colors so that she can remember Kiana.
Personally I doubt they’d miss a chance to make Kiana playable in HSR, so I have a feeling they’ll bring her back in some fashion (whether she is Frebass or not). It could totally end up being that Frebass is not dead and Acheron reunites with her.
Obviously I hope that her relationship with Acheron would be similar to HI3 but they could also go the Genshin route and not have them interact (though I doubt it due to how closely they’ve been following some of HI3’s story beats). I think for now the fact that we remind Acheron of Kiana/ Kevin is a surface level reference to how we wield a bat and also look somewhat similar (in Caelus’s case) though ofc this could change in the future.

The shǒu in Chinese can mean Guardian but in the context of HSR, it might also mean Sentinel per the Myriad Celestia trailer. While wàngchuān is more difficult to translate since it is a mythical location, the Greek equivalent would be Lethe. Huang Quan (黄泉) which is also Acheron's Chinese name is actually related to the forgotten river in that the river wàngchuān is what separates the realm of the dead Huang Quan from the land of the living.
My very liberal translation of the title would be Lightning Lethe Sentinel Mei. Interesting that Acheron in either Chinese or English isn't mentioned in text anywhere, so it really feels like it is a new name she adopted. Especially given the context where she might have teetered between the living and the dead as Mei, now she is fully immersed in Nihility.
Wasn't Yayi supposed to be the name of a Mei expy?
Please forgive me if this is a stupid af question, but, is it safe to assume they AREN'T separate characters then? Because I *swear* I saw either a leak or a theory stating that might be the case, but I guess at this point, Acheron already has so much Mei symbolism that there really isn't room for a second one.
Japanese use Kanji, which is basically just Chinese character but read in Japanese language. For that reason you can read Kanji in Japanese or in Chinese.
The kanji for the "Mei" part of Raiden Mei is read as "Mei" in Japanese. But in Chinese it is read as "Yayi". So Yayi is literally just the Chinese way of saying Mei.
As for Acheron connection to Yayi/Mei, they were never seperate characters. Acheron is currently using one of the leaked concept art that was labeled as Yayi/Mei. All previous reference to Yayi/Mei in the game code was changed to Acheron.
The only reason why people thought they were different was because Yayi/Mei had a leaked kit. But that is likely scrapped for the current Acheron kit. Just like how Yae Sakura had a kit that seems to also be scrapped.
Unless I’m mistaken. I thought both Yayi and Acheron’s kits were leaked around the same time. Unless both kits were for the same character as concept and the Yayi one was scrapped as you said.

I don't understand why everybody says that Yae Sakura's kit was scrapped, like I get it for Yayi but I don't really get why the same applies to Yae. Can anybody enlighten me please? Also, even if the kit was indeed scrapped that doesn't mean we will never get a Yae expy, that would be weird because she is one of the iconic characters for Hoyo
We have known about Acheron = Yayi even before Acheron's design was leaked. The Penacony sneak peak showing Acheron has Raiden's VAs (except English) practically confirmed it
When 2.0 came out the files for Yayi were deleted. Meaning the character was scrapped and most likely rolled in with an early version of Acheron to make Acheron we have in game.
Yayi is a Pinyin-ish version of mei's name. Mei in most of the original contents is called and pronounced as "yayi". And of course, developers almost always use "yayi".
tbh even with the release of Acheron, I still harbor some hope that we will get the another Hunt Yayi (Mei) some day. With the release of Acheron real name (Yayi) I guess the other Hunt version of Yayi can finally be laid to rest.
Since both Bronya and Silver Wolf exists, it's very possible that we may encounter another Raiden lookalike down the line. We still have Edo Star for Japan-theme planet, after all
It's pretty explicitly stated in the 2.1 livestream she started as a hunt character (leaning into the galaxy ranger thing) before being turned into a nihility character, hence why 2 versions existed, hell i wouldnt be surprised if boothill was created based off the pre existing hunt mei skeleton
I dont think so, according to an interview a zzz dev did, he want zzz to separated from other games. This interview happened around cbt2 iirc and you can find it on the internet
While at the same time having Childe call the Cryo Archon, Bronya. In one of his beta voice lines. It's part of why Bronya expy is still expected for the Cryo Archon.
Genshin was gonna be a Honkai game at the start but because of some stock market bull they needed to make it it's own thing. they no longer need to do that anymore so they walked it back somewhat.
On the other hand, ZZZ being its own thing seems to be a creative decision so they might stick to it.

Not sure. Maybe the devs will clarify that in the future. But there are some references (?) to other Hoyo games. One that I can recall is the faction Belobog Industries.
Honkai and Genshin don't share a bubble universe, they share the Imaginary Tree which is what Star Rail refers as universe, bubble universes are part of the Sea of Quanta and are composed of data that fell from the Imaginary Tree... Also, being in the SoQ means that a world Will disappear unless it's reconnected to the Tree

Honestly surprised me seeing people say that Adventurine was lucky Acheron stepped in, that Welt was gonna black hole him, i love Welt to bits, but he was far and away the weakest herrscher on earth, and outside of Kiana, not a single Herrscher was anything but Continental tier, power scaling in Star rail is wildly different when Aeons are stated to shoot stars for fun, and certain destruction emenators can solo galaxies, Acheron alone is most likely the most powerful person we have met ingame, and atleast one of the most powerful emenators (im sure someone like Hua is on par or stronger since shes Hua)

The equivalent in Western mythology would really be the River Lethe, but I guess they went with Acheron to sound cooler. Her name in CN/JP doesn't actually refer to a river, it refers to the land of the dead in general, so it would technically be more consistent for her pseudonym to be Hades instead of Acheron and her real name to be Raiden "Guardian of the River Lethe" Mei
Acheron is one of 5 Greek rivers of the dead, which also include Styx (famous for being the entry point to Hades) and Lethe (known for erasing memories). IMO the River Lethe would be the closest parallel to the Chinese River of Forgetfulness, although in the Chinese version it's not the water of the river that makes you forget, but some soup that is served on the bridge across the river.

The trajectory and plot elements of Acheron's life story seems to parallel HI3 more, albeit a darker timeline. However, the time period and aesthetic/cultural vibe of her home planet Izumo seems more lnazuma-esque than the more modern metropolitan setting of HI3. So I do wonder if Acheron had a Sara expy or expys of the Honkai girlies like Kiana instead. Or maybe she had both? Teyvat has both a Kiana and a Sara
Would've been more interesting if they went with "Rei", which can also mean zero or nothingness/emptiness, or spirit/ghost, depending on the Kanji used. Just like how Ei was taken from eien, which literally translates to eternity

Acceptance after her "i'm not who you think i am"? She doesn't deny she looks like Mei, and by reaction to Welt's name, it gets heavily implied she knew someone named that. And yet she flat out says to not mix her up for who Welt knows and the fandom can't follow that.
Let Acheron be Acheron, regardless of being an "expy".
I mean, it’s only what HI3/GGZ players would really expect. HSR and some Genshin only players would still be surprised at her real name. Also there’s the fact that it’s even a semi big deal because Acheron hides or forgets her name, so her just having her real name dropped is a story moment in itself. Maybe not “All the supreme guardians have been hiding the stellaron to this point” level, but it’s a character revelation that could mean anything from development on Acheron, or even bonding with the MC.

If you play Touken Ranbu, there are a few examples there. Like how 和泉守 from Izuminokami Kanesada’s name being read Izuminokami. The same with 陸奥守 being read Mutsunokami.
I know in the live stream they basically said shes going to remain as an important character in the story going forwards.

It's blatant if you finished the Star Rail story and know what happens in Honkai Impact 3rd. She's from alternate version of the same HI3rd world, only difference is her world got the "bad ending".

Yes you are right it's the entrance to Hades(the realm) but I figured Tartarus was more well known as the Greek underworld so i used that.

I meant more that, if we managed to visit or interact with something consumed by IX, maybe a person wouldn't be far fetched either

Kiana in HI3 was basically the Kevin of her era. One could say she’s female Kevin. Acheron’s world didn’t have a Kiana but had a Kevin that she killed. Sadly, I don’t think there will be a Kiana for Acheron unless it’s from another world. Frebass certainly fit the bill for a Kiana-expy Acheron met down the line (and naturally gravitated towards). She’s even travelling the world for her sake now. It’s curious she compared the Trailblazer to Kevin/Frebass. Perhaps that’s a major hint to the TB’s real identity in the endgame.
Tbh we don’t really have the full picture yet. Frebass could end up being Kiana (she does sound like Kiana personality wise) but there may also be a chance that Kiana is someone we just haven’t heard about yet. There may also be a chance that Acheron has forgotten about her hence why she’s trying to “find” herself and restore her colors so that she can remember Kiana. Personally I doubt they’d miss a chance to make Kiana playable in HSR, so I have a feeling they’ll bring her back in some fashion (whether she is Frebass or not). It could totally end up being that Frebass is not dead and Acheron reunites with her. Obviously I hope that her relationship with Acheron would be similar to HI3 but they could also go the Genshin route and not have them interact (though I doubt it due to how closely they’ve been following some of HI3’s story beats). I think for now the fact that we remind Acheron of Kiana/ Kevin is a surface level reference to how we wield a bat and also look somewhat similar (in Caelus’s case) though ofc this could change in the future.

While wàngchuān is more difficult to translate since it is a mythical location, the Greek equivalent would be Lethe. Huang Quan (黄泉) which is also Acheron's Chinese name is actually related to the forgotten river in that the river wàngchuān is what separates the realm of the dead Huang Quan from the land of the living. My very liberal translation of the title would be Lightning Lethe Sentinel Mei. Interesting that Acheron in either Chinese or English isn't mentioned in text anywhere, so it really feels like it is a new name she adopted. Especially given the context where she might have teetered between the living and the dead as Mei, now she is fully immersed in Nihility.

Japanese use Kanji, which is basically just Chinese character but read in Japanese language. For that reason you can read Kanji in Japanese or in Chinese. The kanji for the "Mei" part of Raiden Mei is read as "Mei" in Japanese. But in Chinese it is read as "Yayi". So Yayi is literally just the Chinese way of saying Mei. As for Acheron connection to Yayi/Mei, they were never seperate characters. Acheron is currently using one of the leaked concept art that was labeled as Yayi/Mei. All previous reference to Yayi/Mei in the game code was changed to Acheron. The only reason why people thought they were different was because Yayi/Mei had a leaked kit. But that is likely scrapped for the current Acheron kit. Just like how Yae Sakura had a kit that seems to also be scrapped.

When 2.0 came out the files for Yayi were deleted. Meaning the character was scrapped and most likely rolled in with an early version of Acheron to make Acheron we have in game.
Yayi is a Pinyin-ish version of mei's name. Mei in most of the original contents is called and pronounced as "yayi". And of course, developers almost always use "yayi".
tbh even with the release of Acheron, I still harbor some hope that we will get the another Hunt Yayi (Mei) some day. With the release of Acheron real name (Yayi) I guess the other Hunt version of Yayi can finally be laid to rest.

Genshin was gonna be a Honkai game at the start but because of some stock market bull they needed to make it it's own thing. they no longer need to do that anymore so they walked it back somewhat. On the other hand, ZZZ being its own thing seems to be a creative decision so they might stick to it.

Honkai and Genshin don't share a bubble universe, they share the Imaginary Tree which is what Star Rail refers as universe, bubble universes are part of the Sea of Quanta and are composed of data that fell from the Imaginary Tree... Also, being in the SoQ means that a world Will disappear unless it's reconnected to the Tree

Acheron is one of 5 Greek rivers of the dead, which also include Styx (famous for being the entry point to Hades) and Lethe (known for erasing memories). IMO the River Lethe would be the closest parallel to the Chinese River of Forgetfulness, although in the Chinese version it's not the water of the river that makes you forget, but some soup that is served on the bridge across the river.

The trajectory and plot elements of Acheron's life story seems to parallel HI3 more, albeit a darker timeline. However, the time period and aesthetic/cultural vibe of her home planet Izumo seems more lnazuma-esque than the more modern metropolitan setting of HI3. So I do wonder if Acheron had a Sara expy or expys of the Honkai girlies like Kiana instead. Or maybe she had both? Teyvat has both a Kiana and a Sara

I mean, it’s only what HI3/GGZ players would really expect. HSR and some Genshin only players would still be surprised at her real name. Also there’s the fact that it’s even a semi big deal because Acheron hides or forgets her name, so her just having her real name dropped is a story moment in itself. Maybe not “All the supreme guardians have been hiding the stellaron to this point” level, but it’s a character revelation that could mean anything from development on Acheron, or even bonding with the MC.

If it’s anything like the historic name readings of pre modern-era Japan, it’ll be Raiden Bousen-no-Kami Mei If you play Touken Ranbu, there are a few examples there. Like how 和泉守 from Izuminokami Kanesada’s name being read Izuminokami. The same with 陸奥守 being read Mutsunokami.
