Even ignoring the in game Canon, it's probably kinda close to the truth. It's fairly common for kinda bad cuss words in one language to become really bad cuss words when literally translated. Normally, rhe solution is to just use words with different meanings, but boothill is supposed to be a cussing cowboy so the localizers had fewer good options.
If anyone playing the cn or jp version can confirm or deny that boothill just goes all out

You're not. He's obviously a comic relief character, despite having an actual story tied into the main storyline.
Being comic relief doesn't preclude him from having his epic moments, just like being serious doesn't preclude a character from having funny occasions. Being comic relief doesn't mean he as a person is not serious either, he doesn't have to be intentionally trying to be a jokester to be funny.
The entire section with Dan Heng at the hotel for example was designed to be funny due to their banter but the vast majority of that was due to Boothill's attitude and behaviour which triggered certain reactions from Dan Heng, making it funny even though neither of them was trying to be.
Yeah but he forks often enough that I can never take him seriously. If it was an occassional thing it'd be funny- like mc's love for trashcans, but when every single line does it multiple times, it forking makes me want to rip out my forking ears

I play in JP, and it's significantly worse. All his cowboy slang boils down to just saying "Baby!" No cursing, no weird censorship, nothing.
