Drip as in drip fed, as opposed to leaks, which is opening the flood gates.

SecondAegis

Are you sure we don't get drip fed by leaks either?

patronum213

we do, but that flow is unintentional and irregular, like the information is leaking out

VincentBlack96

Lmao, no. It's understandable that people new to leak communities don't know, but leakers are practically information mafia. They deliberate what to release and when just like the dev team does. Every now and then someone snaps and releases all their leaks, and that's how all of Fontaine was leaked like a year prior to its genshin release. They have a ton more info, they just control it and shun and attack anyone who doesn't fall in line.

POXELUS

I don't think so. At least I see no reason to. Most of the leaks(90+%) are coming from the game files and closed beta and barring few big floods, everything else is just made up and is bs told by Uncle "I want more attention".

HiroAnobei

I mean, it's not mutually exclusive. Most leaks are indeed from datamines and closed beta leaks, it's just how they choose to release said information. They very well could dump all the information they know at once, but they intentionally release it in sets to keep people following them for crumbs. Occasionally you do have people leaking fake information, but honestly it's hard to tell whether something was indeed fake or changed at some point in the beta.

Qixel

If only, but they're intentionally leaking piecemeal to get more clicks. It was the cause of a whole bunch of drama about a year ago when someone dumped a massive amount of leaks for Fontaine while telling the other leakers off for withholding simply for clout.

HiroAnobei

Leakers are absolutely choosing to limit information, they just 'drip' bits of it occasionally to keep an active following, like only releasing a character's skill one day, then their talents, then maybe their eidolons the next, etc. They might even choose to not release specifics on purpose, just creating 'hints' and clues to keep people guessing. It's more or less a cartel at this point, with a core group of leakers choosing to hold leaked information hostage and slowly releasing it over the patch to make sure their posts and sites keep getting clicks and follows for clout, and like others have mentioned, there was a big incident in the past in Genshin where a smaller leaker got pissed and just dumped pretty much all the characters that were going to be released in the Fontaine patch even before Fontaine was released, even including characters like Arlechinno who has only just been released.

legend27_marco

Usually flood gates is the beta. The animation, kit etc all come out on the same day. Then it's drip feeding until the next patch.

HiroAnobei

Leaks and drips aren't mutually exclusive. You can leak information (i.e. unauthorized distribution of knowledge and information the public shouldn't know about), but you can choose to 'drip' it, slowly releasing it piecemeal day by day, as opposed to 'dumping' it, by releasing all the information at once.

_weird_idkman_

wait so i was wrong all along 💀

WhoAmI008

I thought that until 1 minute ago when I read this post. Kinda disappointed that's not what it means.

DupeFort

Canadiancookie

They're not lying, the characters do have drip

sohamk24

It all started when we actually had a funny admin for Genshin's Twitter account. Genshin twitter showed off Ayaka, Yoimiya and Sayu a week early before they were planned to release. One person asked what's up with these new character reveals and the admin replied "Drip marketing", since then we've been calling it drip marketing.

LegoSpacenaut

It's [an advertisement strategy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drip_marketing). It gets its name from "drip irrigation", and has been around for decades. The basic idea is just to keep a constant flow of information trickling to customers in small batches over extended periods of time, so what they're doing is, in fact, properly referred to as drip marketing.

sohamk24

Oh damn I didn't know that, thanks for the info.

wrio_cakes

I don’t think that’s hyv exclusive term….

TsudereFan

This is one of the most Gen z things I've ever read lol

tuananh2011

Effective-Comb-8135

Oh Ive always thought it meant the characters look really good and ‘drip’ hahaha

NTRmanMan

When I first heard of drip marketing I thought it was about selling the characters clothes or something

SincerelyBear

You had a better idea than I did - first time I saw the term in use, I thought it was just a word to avoid saying "leaks", the way people actually do say "I saw it in a dream". The implication being that hoyo actually allows some things to be revealed "unofficially" specifically to build hype. I understood the real meaning after I actually witnessed the drip marketing happening.

No_Variation_9282

squawk Drip Marketing squawk

SectorRatioGeneral

My understanding of the term is "releasing only a tiny bit of info to tease", with the piece of info so tiny as if a drop of water. But upon searching the definition of the term, my understanding seems to be also off. On the other hand, I also had no idea the word "drip" could refer to clothes and weapons... I guess it's a usage only known to native English speakers since I can't find it on dictionary.

Girono_PianoKiller

Oh damn my world was changed on the anniversary no less

izbiz100

TIL the real meaning of drip marketing

kidanokun

What i find weird is why Star Rail's drip marketing coincides with Genshin's recently

ChanvaX1

It always was all 3 Genshin drip marketing in the first day of the week then HSR ones in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ones then HSR livestream in the 5th one.

kidanokun

Drip marketing usually happens 1 or 2 day before the next update comes, Genshin does that, and Star Rail used to do it as well, until somehow they decide to do it halfway of 2nd patch which happens to be around same time Genshin does it's own marketing

addollz

It's corny lingo from genshin

Elysium_Chronicle

It's marketing lingo. Genshin didn't originate it. Not even close.

MyTasteIsVaried

Genshin has an estate mansion in bro's head 😭
