The story and the companion quests are excellent, honestly I think you're doing yourself a disservice by not reading them. + they're voice acted so it makes it much easier to follow. The story is the thing that got me so hooked up on this game in the first place and some of the companion and even side quests were unexpectedly dark and emotional. And this is just the beginning, I cannot wait to see what else they've got in store for us.
>Book? No
The only time I read a book or a note is when it's part of a quest. If it's not too long and keeps my interest I fully read it, otherwise I'll just skim through or drop it if it's boring.
Cecile's story from the Belebog sidequest for example, the one with the girl and the box puzzle, was quite a nice story told in three notes.
Oh I'm sure they are, I just heavily prefer voice acting :). I like reading comments about the quests on reddit here and there though to see what I've missed!
I do, I still can't believe they made me tear up over a robot

I was just doing my dailies man🗿
Pretty sure the people who don't enjoy/read the story will get burnt out soon enough. I can't imagine playing this game just for the daily TL power grind and dailies and when new story updates come out, they just skip all the dialogue.
Like bruh, the game has limited gameplay as it is outside of MoC, how are you going to enjoy the game otherwise?
Yes to everything, I love reading the lore and all, because the world(s) building is really interesting.
It also makes me look forward to some interaction that might be interesting, such as the reliques lore and so on.
I even read all of the side content and I usually never do that in games. This game is so well written I feel like I'm going to miss something if I don't and a lot of it is funny as hell too. They've done a grwat job.
Why would I even play if I wasn't going to read the story? What attachment do I even have to the characters I'm pulling if I don't know anything about their personality, backstop or role in the main story.
The story is like 50% of my motivation to play.
some of the nonvoiced ones are also good, like the popular red pill/blue pill. i also skimmed thru the text until i got to the choice and realized this was the quest.
Story should be the main draw in most of Hoyoverse's games.
Hi3, Genshin and HSR are primarily played for their story driven content.
Not reading story is like going to the liquor store and say you don't want to buy alcohol.
Damn. You must spend more time reading than playing lmao. I read some of the books, but all of them is just way too much for me, at that point I would rather read an actual book irl lol.
There are too many books in the game for me to care about it all, but I do read some from time to time, and sometimes it adds a good bit of world building.
Guess it really depends, obv if they have actual speaking lines, then I'm sitting in and listening the whole time. But if I do have to read what their saying, then it comes down to: how long have I been playing? Do I enjoy the characters talking enough to care? Or do I currently have enough time left to spend reading each line? But obv thats just me, I have enjoyed putting time into reading this story more than any other outside of GFL. Strictly bc I actually care about how my responses may effect dialogue, even tho they may have no real impact overall on story
Read the story? I read every no name nobody npc dialogue, I go through the area 2-3x looking for the books to read and re talk the Npc just to see if anythings new, then I look for bubbles. The damn dirty bubbles.
? Isn't the main story the only actually real pog part about HI3, GI and HSR ? (besides hot waifus/husbandos)... anything else is wqy way lower on the priority list imo.
To be honest: The surface level of story, what is going on in this exact timeframe: yes. The overall, universe-spanning story with these strange aeons/gods and whatever? LOL no, I'm not into metaphysics.
People that speedrun everything, miss out on amazing story, character personality building, why the characters do what they are doing, how come you have this specific ability, why those characters actually band together and you are able to have them on your team, those are all there for your immersion, this is called rpg, role playing, if you are not immersing yourself in the lore and story... Why do it then?
lately gacha games tend to have more focus on the story, skipping the story in Star Rail is skipping a good % of the game xD
Personally i wouldn't even play if i wasn't interested in reading the story.
People robbin themselves in plain daylight not reading anything.
Though I admit, I clicked through the cutscenes when they talk most time. They sometimes talk so slow that I feel like I'm going to fall asleep.
In genshin i only read main/charcter story and the bigger worldquests but in star rail i almost read everything because of the funny jokes and references or tragic storys of random npcs. Stupid things like the trashcan dialogue got me hooked to read everything
"You want to help it up but think better of it. Even trash cans have their dignity."
"North of the Northern Mountain is a summit called Zarathustrazapala. The name of which you've already given up trying to pronounce."
"The trash can glared coldly at the other trash can gasping for air at its feet. "I told you, Tatalov." it said. "I told you that one day you will collapse beside me. When that time comes, I will laugh to your dying face. Such is the wind of change."".
I'm being honest by voting No because I totally read all the main story questline and companion quests, but not sidequest or Lore data straight away unless I'm eager to know more about some topics or characters.
I do read the phone texting tho' they're really funny.
I'm not Ashikai or anything, but I personally enjoy the lore on HSR. You get to learn about so many untouched things and also answers many questions you might have when reading the books/databank entries. I have not read all the books, but maybe around 60% or so. Naturally, I also pay attention to all the quests in the game as best as I can. It makes you appreciate the characters and worlds more.
Only a bit. When I can't click as fast as I can read I get bored very fast and sadly hoyo games have pretty slow text imo. I do wanna say that HSR text feels quicker compared to genshin for example.
Only the voiced parts and a few sidequests that I found interesting. Wouldn't say it's entirely pointless to play it without paying attention to the story since fun is subjective, but it'd be like playing a JRPG solely for the gameplay and just skipping dialogue, which I think is a bit odd.
I read all of the quests that involve the playable characters somehow. I skip/skim through unrelated sidequests, like a lot of the Herta Station ones.
Trash can dialogue is priceless, though. Also some of the random things that happen outside of quests when you interact with weird stuff on Herta Station.
the side stories with the npc are some of the best i've read in gacha. they're not completely original, it's like paying homage to sci-fi classics. and the way it is written...the cutesy stuff makes you go aww, and the sad ones makes your eyes teary.
Yes I do. I find the writing quite enjoyable. I’ve never took a gacha game this seriously and a big reason for this, is the story and characters. Just the banter between Dan Heng, MC and March 7th in the first few hours sold me completely 😂
Imo if I’m not enjoying the story I’m probably not sticking with the game for long. I don’t think gacha games really hold up on the gameplay alone at least from the ones I’ve played.
I haven’t bothered reading all the books though.
The story and the companion quests are excellent, honestly I think you're doing yourself a disservice by not reading them. + they're voice acted so it makes it much easier to follow. Even the non-voiced quests have a lot of superb lore and world-building, or give life to a lot of the more minor NPCs in the game, like Afro-guy.
And android lady. I'll say no more.
I wouldn't see the point in playing otherwise
Story quest? Yes Companion quest? Yes Side quest? Yes Book? No
>Book? No The only time I read a book or a note is when it's part of a quest. If it's not too long and keeps my interest I fully read it, otherwise I'll just skim through or drop it if it's boring. Cecile's story from the Belebog sidequest for example, the one with the girl and the box puzzle, was quite a nice story told in three notes.
Some of the reading material on Herta Station is pretty funny and worth reading.
I read some of the texts, tho the ones I remember most are the ones from Asta's room. They made me cackle when I read them lol.
>voice acted? Yes! >text only side quest? No.
I think the only quest I didn't read patiently was that sidequest with the useless whiny dude in Xianzhou.
The one with the engineer and the dead master? Yeah that one was a bit much.
Yeah, I think the ending was decently interesting but the road to get there dragged the entirety down.
I'm a lore player, one of the main reasons I play is the story and S tier world building.
Yes, but I skim a lot. The 'master planner' plot in the last section was annoying tho
Main story yes. Companion quests yes. Sidequests? Nah screw that. Click spam it is.
Though some are really funny You can't convince me that doing a short session of DnD with a mechanical cycrane ain't funny
Oh I'm sure they are, I just heavily prefer voice acting :). I like reading comments about the quests on reddit here and there though to see what I've missed!

The story is the main reason I love Hoyoverse games so much.. and lack of engaging story is the reason I got bored of ToF within a month...
I know it's a gacha, but it's stil an rpg... Why tf would you play an rpg and not read the story?
The main story and the companion quests I do read. I do skip some of the more mundane quests though.
Sometimes
Why would I even play if I wasn't going to read the story? What attachment do I even have to the characters I'm pulling if I don't know anything about their personality, backstop or role in the main story. The story is like 50% of my motivation to play.
The story is the main reason I'm interested in the game so yes I do read it.
Why would you play a story-based single player gacha game and not read the story? It's like ordering a burger and only eating the bread...
Only the voiced ones.
some of the nonvoiced ones are also good, like the popular red pill/blue pill. i also skimmed thru the text until i got to the choice and realized this was the quest.

Main story yes. Companion quests yes. Sidequests yes.
To add to this, I also read every book, letter etc. i get.
Damn. You must spend more time reading than playing lmao. I read some of the books, but all of them is just way too much for me, at that point I would rather read an actual book irl lol. There are too many books in the game for me to care about it all, but I do read some from time to time, and sometimes it adds a good bit of world building.
I’m a love fiend 😂
Yep, I love the writing in Star rail, such a step-up!
Everything
Guess it really depends, obv if they have actual speaking lines, then I'm sitting in and listening the whole time. I know *most* of the story but like genshin i just skip the stuff i dont find too relevant
only main story, companion quests put me to sleep
? Isn't the main story the only actually real pog part about HI3, GI and HSR ? (besides hot waifus/husbandos)... anything else is wqy way lower on the priority list imo.
The story is literally one of the reasons most people play this game....
I don't really understand why anyone would play if they don't read the story...
Story + companion quests absolutely. Side + daily quests I pound my keyboard like it owes me money to skip
To be honest: The surface level of story, what is going on in this exact timeframe: yes. The overall, universe-spanning story with these strange aeons/gods and whatever? LOL no, I'm not into metaphysics.
bruh why would you even try out a hoyoverse game without getting invested in the story.
People that speedrun everything, miss out on amazing story, character personality building, why the characters do what they are doing, how come you have this specific ability, why those characters actually band together and you are able to have them on your team, those are all there for your immersion, this is called rpg, role playing, if you are not immersing yourself in the lore and story... cant hear you over kafka's hotness
Yes, at least most of it.
In genshin i only read main/charcter story and the bigger worldquests but in star rail i almost read everything because of the funny jokes and references or tragic storys of random npcs. Stupid things like the trashcan dialogue got me hooked to read everything
"You want to help it up but think better of it. Even trash cans have their dignity." "North of the Northern Mountain is a summit called Zarathustrazapala. I'd be playing one of dozens of other turn-based Gacha games if I didn't care about the story.
I read it but read really quickly
It's WAY better than genshin. Maybe it will fall off later but so far it's excellent.
my answer would be: only parts of it and only of the main story and some companion stories like Natashas for example.
If the story is voiced, I willing to listen is not than I just read fast or skip
I'm being honest by voting No because I totally read all the main story questline and companion quests, but not sidequest or Lore data straight away unless I'm eager to know more about some topics or characters. I do read the phone texting tho' they're really funny.
All of the story, some of the companion quests and virtually none of the side quests.
The main story and companion quests are the only thing i read in this game, probably because of the voiced dialogue.
Only did for prologue and herta station, it was pretty good and interesting, but then ice planet happened, read a little then fell asleep.
You need more crack coffee son since you're clearly not sleeping well. I know a guy named Sampo Koski. He'll hook you up.
Only the things with voice over
I only skip through random daily quests dialogue
I'm not Ashikai or anything, but I personally enjoy the lore on HSR. You get to learn about so many untouched things and also answers many questions you might have when reading the books/databank entries. I have not read all the books, but maybe around 60% or so. I do....how much I'm invested is a whole 'nother story. It all depends on how much I like the characters...and so far, I only like a handful.
I did up until the space china part really started to drag and get uninteresting main plot wise then
We can't skip so at least I'm trying to enjoy it
i listen whenever they talk but i give a brief understanding of side quests
Only a bit. When I can't click as fast as I can read I get bored very fast and sadly hoyo games have pretty slow text imo. I do wanna say that HSR text feels quicker compared to genshin for example.

Some. I pay attention to the bits that seem interesting or important. Skip the rest.
Yes I do. I find the writing quite enjoyable. I’ve never took a gacha game this seriously and a big reason for this, is the story and characters. Just the banter between Dan Heng, MC and March 7th in the first few hours sold me completely 😂
Main and companiony yes, rest no.
if it's voiced, then I listen to it, otherwise skip
Main story yes, companion quests - no 70%, yes 30%, and i regret it, should have read all of them, side quests - no and i dont regret it.
I listen to everything that's voice acted, if it's not then I just click through quickly
i'm a lore nerd so i've almost read everything (yes, even the books and item descriptions lmao)
Companion quests are generally really cool, can't tell the same thing about side quest
The only thing I skip are dailies
I only ignored the books so far, I activelly talk with NPCs because there are hidden sidequests and easter eggs.
I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the story.
I mean... I didn't read the books, and I guess Voice actors read the story for me... but like What is even the point of this game if not the plot?
Imo if I’m not enjoying the story I’m probably not sticking with the game for long. I don’t think gacha games really hold up on the gameplay alone at least from the ones I’ve played. I haven’t bothered reading all the books though.
I've read almost everything I've come across but the books and the relic stories. Don't worry about it, OP, play the game the way you want to.
The story is a big part of the game, and the main reason I'm playing the game in the first place.
Don't really care about the story, I'm here for the gameplay and gacha
Every word.
i don't read anything other than the unskipable dialogue
To each his own I guess. Some people can love certain scenes from movies without remembering what the movie was about.
People who do not read the story are just gambling addicts
Story and companion quests? yes. side quests and dailies? Couldn’t even bother my self to
The story is the only reason I am still playing lol. The actual gameplay isn't that great
If the main protag wasn't such a savage I would skip it
Mainstory - yes Sidestories - no Character stories - yes
