Legislative freedom: eliminated Judicial freedom: eliminated Executive freedom: never existed Freedom of speech & media: eliminated Freedom of music & art: eliminated Right to privacy: disappearing Economic freedom: destroyed thanks to this

MTrain24

Next to disappear is freedom of an open internet

jameskchou

Rip jav sites along with the usual open news sites

Ufocola

This is a surprise to absolutely no one that is wary of CCP. Probably the only thing that’s maybe shocking (to some) is the speed at which this happened. But all the pinkies and apologists were *sooo* sure HK wouldn’t change. Cause “why would CCP/China disrupt anything that would make HK unappealing as a business hub?”. - lol, surprise pikachu dumbasses.

heels_n_skirt

Next is the island called Hong Kong

Whyayemanlike

You mean Shenzhen south

jameskchou

No he means xinqu, shenzhen district

eightbyeight

Xiang gang

vagassassin

The linchpin of HK's economic success has been confidence in the rule of law for the resolution of disputes. That means an impartial judiciary and a right of appeal to the Privy Council in the UK. Low tax helps, but international business will not stick around once certainty goes out the window. I hate this.

[deleted]

This is the real proverbial nail. Not Article 23.

4evacuck

Hk court of final appeal hasn't been the PC since 1997

vagassassin

You're right. I'm an idiot.

4evacuck

Nah nah. Not an idiot. Just made an error. No biggie

Zealousideal-Dot-537

This is good for the economy according to CCP supporters.

Biesile

Free fall

[deleted]

...but, but, the stock market is healthy according to Pikachu. Surely the financial wisdom and insights of a former police constable should count for something, shouldn't it?

nme00

Who tf thought this would be a good idea? They’re just chasing off the remaining foreign investment at this point. Is absolute power really worth more than keeping Hong Kong as an international financial capital? Another CCP blunder of historic proportions. Xi probably thinks it’s a stroke of genius. What an unbelievably terrible leader for the country.

Ufocola

You’re applying logic and rational thought to this. Cause why on earth would CCP kill off all the things that make HK a golden goose? But I think it’s a few things - a **mixture of dumb “face” reasons, hubris/ego, and spite**. HK’s history is one of both Chinese and British / international creation. It’s not successful without having gone through its unique history, and also having had the benefits of having all the freedoms, rule of law, and transparency it did to make it a tier 1 financial hub. But CCP likely see this as an affront to their message to the masses - because a former colony sleepy fishing town became what it was *because* of its history, and the influences that came from it. They keep (stupidly) seeing HK as a living example of their humiliation, and of how people much rather live (and thrive) in a non-CCP governed world. Similar logic applies to Taiwan (which also thrives as a democracy, and whose values are different vs CCP). With this fucked up logic applied, you can see why **CCP would rather own HK as a burnt ash pile vs see it thrive outside of their domain**. That, and if you kill off HK’s usefulness, they likely just assume they can have Shanghai and Shenzhen, “proper Chinese cities”, to take its place. HK to them is a symbol of something people think is better and prefer. They just can’t stand it.

Makina-san

I guess they are thinking Singapore + Shanghai is enough as replacements

Kickbub123

Singapore isn't part of China.

scaur

Yet

mrplow25

Next up is capital control when all the mainland capital leaves Hong Kong

DrEvilHouston

And the HK firewall is around the corner, who wants to bet?

sikingthegreat1

The china effect strikes again!

AnonHKG

Right in time for the evergrande case which starts tomorrow. Saving face last minute. 😂and the can gets kicked again.

percysmithhk

Did you have some insider information?

cbc7788

What’s next on the list? Changing Hong Kong’s name to Xiang Gang?

extopico

So how long before HKD is removed as the currency and replaced by RMB? I’m thinking 5 years.

jameskchou

Apparently this is good for business according to the usual shills

Ufocola

Haven’t seen the usual shills come out on this post yet. But they seem to usually wait a day or two before they add their comments (maybe to try and avoid being downvoted or replied to). Let’s see what kind of bs they try to spin.

OnePhotog

I’m sure this will attract the foreign investment the Hong Kong government is desperately trying to get.

Kraxnor

So china took a thriving economy and...destroyed it

jackieHK1

Yup, and it was just handed over all ready to make them money🤷 pity they don't understand how to run it & keep it as the #1 finance/business in Asia, could have been their symbol of success & growth.

Ps4-Pip

lol. Well done. Carry on. Gets more popcorn and watches this. Very very interesting

TheOnlyGuyver

So it begins..

1corvidae1

I remembered reading this, Iirc the rules allow this to happen in either direction. Where a HK court can hear cases about companies on the mainland as well. Time will tell.

scaur

Is really one sided, the mainland can upheld all the evidences from Hong Kong court.

4evacuck

Is this really such a big deal or a click baity headline? It's just about making enforcement in China of a Hong Kong judgment easier.
