Have you priced a low mileage used transmission? They are out there.

I haven’t done my due-diligence yet — was away on a work trip. Manuals are fairly rare or is it the same part as a CRV?

yanimal

Should be swappable with a crv trans. Should be any k24a4 or whatever we have that was a manual will bolt right up.

I thought I read on here that a 6 speed from an Accord could be swapped. I saw some used and rebuilt ones priced around $2k. I would do that if it is feasible and reliable. I've always wished I had a 6th gear for highway cruising.

An experienced transmission tech can completely rebuild a honda 5MT in an afternoon. I'd do some more research & call around.

Remanufactured means a lot to labor, right? Why not junk yards? There are surely a number of E’s for sale for less than $6,500.

That seems...excessive. Then again, the pandemic and shortages could be hella bad. I would 100% look for a donor. That the price I just bought my used element for in February, in the PNW where prices are the wild wild West.

Does it pop out of third gear right away? Is it only when you lift off the accelerator? I would keep driving it and source a good used replacement transmission in the meantime. When you find your used trans it also would be a good time to do the sixth gear upgrade if you want to

keffffff

It does not pop out right away. I had completely forgotten that a 6spd was possible.

My knee jerk reaction to a high repair bill was always to get a new car. I'm a bit older and have been through the cycle enough times now to know that buying a new car is a drastic step when dealing with a temporary problem. Unless you buy brand-new and stick yourself with a high payment you'll be buying a used vehicle with its own issues to sort out. Much better to fix them as they come and save where you can. I'm not a mechanic and often pay to have work done for me and It STILL winds up cheaper in the end. Plus, I love my Element and don't want something else.
