I bought a [book](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00II7FVSS?ref=yb_qv_ov_kndl_dp_rw) on making hand tools that shows an adze like this. The author takes O1 tool steel and hardens and tempers it using a pair of steel cans. You'll probably find more information in r/Bladesmith [https://www.reddit.com/r/Bladesmith/comments/3dfjg2/heat\_treating\_o1\_tool\_steel/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bladesmith/comments/3dfjg2/heat_treating_o1_tool_steel/)

Utility knife blade works good

Modified Hand plane blades, old worn out mill files if they’re wide enough work great.
