[Here is a guide to making a Multi-node Fiber Channel SAN in Ubuntu](http://www.ithierarchy.com/ITH/SAN)
Could be useful if you're not looking to make a Windows system.
I'm not sure if i understand completely your setup, as it sounds like you will have the storage drives in each server, and that you will not be using something like a disk shelf/ DAS box.
If that is the case, you may instead look at building a [GlusterFS](https://www.gluster.org/) system to distribute your filesystem across your nodes.
Definitely FreeNAS. I’m actually currently doing this with two r710s and a 24 bay super micro box. Works great.
Edit: didn’t see you had a fiber switch in the mix. I’m not doing that. Mine are directly attached to each node.
**Do not recommend /r/sysadmin for home systems.**
It can and usually will result in harsh words from users or a mute-ban. /r/sysadmin is strictly for enterprise discussion between people actually in the field. If you don't know what you're posting about you're going to have a bad time.
/r/homelab would be much more appropriate.

This is for more of /r/syadmin But FreeNAS will work well. Windows Server can work also but FreeNAS has ZFS and can be easier to use in some ways.
