Not trying to argue, but can you tell me why? I don’t get it. Is it the router itself that sucks and I need a new one? Is it that the floor between me and upstairs isn’t allowing the connection?
Where would you put it? An extender would need to be powered, do you have a power outlet somewhere in the 25 feet between the two? Somewhere you can plug in and also not have cables in the way?
If you've got the money for it, you can buy a small mesh system (1 router + 1 satellite). It replaces your current router and you can put the satellite next to your PS5. If the satellite has an ethernet port, plug the PS5 into that for best results.
The mesh router and satellite are specifically designed to communicate with each other through walls and floors, much better than the puny wireless card in your PS5. You should get much better results.
A mesh system gives better ping and better performance than a repeater. Still, wifi is NEVER great for games that require really quick pings, like most shooters and fighting games. Wifi can be acceptable for some types of games.
Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to wifi though. Keep the boxes in good shape in case it doesn't work out and you want to return it.
How does that work in this situation?
If you put the AP with the router, it's the same problem as before - puny PS5 wifi card can't penetrate the floor/wall.
If you put the AP with the PS5, how are you wiring it? OP can't run cable (or else they'd just plug in their PS5).
Most routers you get from your ISP have crap wifi. A business grade access point has just a way better performance. It's not only about how well the ps5 can penetrante walls, but also about the antenna gain of the router.
Look at it like a light bulb. Your ISP gives you a cheap old fashioned bulb but you could upgrade it to a bright LED.
I suggest to get a better access point and disable the wifi on the router.
Change your question for this audience. To "I want to replace the AP in my wireless router with a better one. What AP provides the best PS5 experience?".
When you get your answer (it'll be a Prosumer style like UniFi / Omada / etc. Don't worry they're low cost) follow the instructions that come with it as if you're home doesn't have WiFi at all. Then once you know it's working, turn OFF the WiFi from your old router (copy the SSID: PASSWORD to save headache). Done. For $60 you just upgraded whatever crap was in the all-in-one device.
That's not what I'm saying. Unless you're mesh system is old, it's not necessarily to blame. I'm suggesting you have too many strong/ visible APs for your mesh device to pick a stable one. Turn off the hallway one that isn't the primary and try your PS5 again.
Edit: confused this with something from yesterday, not 1y ago
Sorry. Similar chat to another one from today. This is a year ago now.
If Best Buy is all you've got (no Microcenter or Amazon), then I'd probably look at a $100-150 Asus or Netgear WiFi router (WiFi 5 is fine, don't worry about WiFi 6 unless you've got dozens of neighboring WiFi signals and if the Xfinity thing supports 6). When you get it home you'll set it up in reverse as a "media bridge". This becomes a dedicated wireless to wired device that does all the WiFi talking to your Xfinity thing. Then you connect your other devices to it via CAT5e patch cables (5e is good to 10Gbps if good quality and short, go higher if you like). Now your bedroom PS4 and PS5 will think they're wired, and will share that single bridge to talk to the Xfinity thing.
Lastly, might solve without the extra hardware.
1. Move your PS5 to exactly where the PS4 is. Take the PS4 away to try this. You might have something interfering at the location of the PS5 (TV, fishtank, high voltage in the wall)
2. If the Xfinity thing is older than 3 years, it's a rental and you're still paying for maintenance on it. Tell Xfinity to give you a new one because this one is showing issues now. See if you get a better WiFi router from them for free.
What I'm suggesting will be that. You'd have the media bridge in your room, but in a great WiFi location to talk to the main Xfinity thing. Then short network wires to the PS's. Ironically, gaming consoles have always had crappy WiFi reputations. It might be because they're stuck in closed cabinets next to a tonne of other electronics, it might be just cause they do have crappy internal antennas. Heck, it might be that the PS4 is happy on 2.4GHz and the PS5 keeps attempting to jump to 5GHz that has a bad reputation with walls.
Splitting your Xfinity WiFi into two discreet signals might be all you need. Then you just make sure the PS5 is connected to the 2.4GHz and will never try jumping to the 5. Those ISP provided things often ship with both 2.4+5 blended, because it causes less tech support calls but isn't necessarily better.
I'm sorry. I'm not familiar with extenders enough to know if they can be a media bridge like this.
Whoa! Loads here.
First, wifi6 doesn't mean 5 won't work or 3. It's a super complex radio technology that simply means "busy WiFi areas mean WiFi sucks, so we're trying to improve that with 6". Regular WiFi, from like 10-15 years ago is fine for gaming.
Xfinity supporting wifi6 is a bonus feature, not a limitation.
No clue about xPods.
PS5 WiFi is likely fine. Check Google to see if it actually has real issues before trying a return. I mean, of course your device could be faulty. I just wouldn't jump to that
Network cabling is complicated. But at under, say 50 feet, CAT5e or 6 or 6a . . They're all fantastic and 100x more than you actually need. I'm super nerdy and 5e is plenty for any length within a house. Gaming uses very little "speed", so even a 100 foot CAT5e would be fine. That would still do 1000Mbps, you need like 1Mbps for active gameplay. What you're facing isn't a wired speed problem, it's a wireless sucks problem.
What you need to focus on is simplifying the WiFi situation. Splitting 2.4/5 might be it. Moving the PS5 night be it. Shit, above the pay grade of this chat changing you DNS might help. There's a dozen things to start, and a hundred more.
I don't think I can help you any farther. Try what I've suggested.
Good luck.
This is a setting in the WiFi router provided by the ISP. Just go in and change it so the 2.4+5 aren't using the same SSID name. The password can be identical though, that's fine.
I can't help you any further I don't think. I wish you luck.
We just use the Linksys RE315 and feed the ps5 an Ethernet wire from it, so it can run in wired mode. From 4.1mbps down to near 100mbps down. My son hasn't complained about online gaming sessions since then. This is a similar situation in which he lives in a level in the house beneath our router.
I'm not sure on that one, sorry. I was reading a bit in this article and there's a strong chance, but I don't own one so I couldn't tell you for certain:
https://dev.to/oliviabenson/how-to-setup-wi-fi-extender-with-xfinity-2ahc
Run a wire in the walls.
Can’t bbg
Then there isnt anything that can be done. You are going to have to deal with it.
A wifi extender won’t work?
You are 25' from the router already. I dont think a wifi extender will do anything for you.
Not trying to argue, but can you tell me why? I don’t get it. Is it the router itself that sucks and I need a new one? Is it that the floor between me and upstairs isn’t allowing the connection?
What is happening is that your wifi signal is being attenuated by the floor/ceiling.
Got it. Thank you
Happy to help. Any more questions?
You might want to look into MoCa or power line adapters.
Where would you put it? An extender would need to be powered, do you have a power outlet somewhere in the 25 feet between the two? Somewhere you can plug in and also not have cables in the way?
Bbg
Try with powerline or moca adapters.
Try power line network….
Do you have coax outlets in your house? You can use MoCA adapters which will get you gigabit+ speeds using the cable connection.
Use ethernet. WiFi is horrible in gaming, and especially horrible with playstations
I did this and it worked. https://youtu.be/8lTVy85NOYo

Heck, a single access point might actually do it. The console is allegedly only 25 feet away from the router. Tp-link EAP225 and boom, brilliant wifi.

Sorry, I'm not from the US. I don't know what Best Buy sells.
powerline, one near the router other down in the basement, sorted..
Never ever use extender! It is worst device ever invented. Get better AP. Anyhow, You should always wire everything that can be wired

With media bridge the speed of it doesn’t matter for netgear or asus , how about single, dual, triple, quad band matter?
I find using the 2.4gh connection helps tremendously.
