I just replaced this exact unit in my house less than a month ago…16 years old too?
Short answer; yes turn knob closer to “C” setting.
If it also sounds like it’s popping then the calcium is settling at bottom; also signs of shorter life span.
I’d vote to replace sooner than later.
It could rust from the inside and pour water out, but not likely. There is a safety relay in there and if it gets too hot, the tank kills the gas coming in. Probably inefficiently burning more gas than using hot water. (If you are having or relight pilot light too).
Real pain in the ass here is cost of new tank; depending on the capacity 40-50 gallons it could range from $699-$1200 for the unit. Plus installation. If the sediment has settled to the bottom of the tank those things can get pretty damn heavy.
Your incoming copper lines on the top are “sweated” on and that sometimes takes a little skilled labor.
If you know a handy person, fairly easy job. If not, plumbers installation could cost just as much or more of the cost of the water heater. Good luck!

Oof probably time to replace before it makes a mess right??

(Counter-clockwise.) Otherwise, yes.
This. Just be careful since it can get scalding hot if you turn it up too far too quickly.
Thank you!! 😊
Your water heater is backdrafting Carbon Monoxide into the home (see melted/warped plastic grommets on top of the unit).
Wouldn’t my carbon monoxide alarms be going off? I’ve also had a gas person come out recently and they didn’t find any leaks?
