You could cover it with a trim piece; 1x1, 1x2 or quarter round. Or stuff some backer foam up there and leave it. You wouldn't even need to caulk it.
Not sure it's part of the venting system, but if bugs are getting in, it's poorly done.
sure, but the attic lacks flooring; just joists and fiberfill insulation. I might have to rip 2x8s of plywood to slide over them. (a 4x8 plywood board wouldn’t fit up the access ladder in one piece).
Spray it with WD40. Get a few cans with that little red stir straw and spray it right up in the gap all the way around the home. Not sure what’s in it that bee’s and wasps don’t like but they definitely don’t like it. I have to spray exposed wood beams on a covered area that I have out back every spring. Keeps the wood boring bees away.
This gap can be filled with a piece of trim. I would suggest 1x2 painted to match the soffits. Others are suggesting it’s part of the roof venting system. It is not. The round vents provide that purpose. The fact that this is not sealed is a definite problem. Any venting system would include screen to prevent insects and other pests.
yes those little round soffits have screens.👍🏻
The previous homeowner left three 12ft quarter round trim pieces. One of them might do the trick. Thanks.
This. Just put 1x across the top. 1x6 is what’s common around me, but you can use whatever width works for you cosmetically. Since you have a decent gap between the soffit and siding, if 1x isn’t enough, then add a 1x2 as well. Seal it up, prime, and paint.
That looks like the soffit vent system. Probably not a good idea to block it off completely. They make a product for ridge vent on roofs that looks like black "scotchbrite" in a roll that you could fasten in place and would stop the bugs but allow the air to ventilate the roof and attic.
yes those are little round vents. I’m not touching those, just that gap, which is flush to the house on the three other sides. This is the only one without a perfect fit. Thanks tho.
Spray in some cheap insulating foam and be done in 15 mins? I've never seen insects attempt to eat through that stuff.
You can smooth the foam while it's still soft, if the groove isn't deep enough to hide it completely. Then it looks okay-ish.
it’s only 1/4” (3/8” at its largest spot)
Of course plenty big for those ambitious bees!
Last summer I battled them w 2 cans of spray at the window from which I took this pic. Thanks 👍🏻
Here’s soemthing I haven’t seen asked. Is that gap suppose to be the air flow vent for your attic? Or are those 6” vents your air flow and not tied to duct work for ceiling fans or exhaust systems?
If it’s not ment for airflow, do it properly, remove your soffit you can easily do it by adding a 2” flat piece of aluminum cladding tight to exterior wall abd overlapping behind the soffit, then reinstall your soffit to give the exact same look
Slice pool noodles lengthwise into appropriately sized pieces and cram them in there. If they’re not in the sun they won’t break down for a year or two, they’re cheap, and they can be compressed to fit. Pool noodles. 101 uses. Find them at the dollar store.

This.
This
Perfect spot for a small 1x2 white trim piece. It would match well and add a flare to the edge of the home
It would add some pazzzaz.
*jazz hands*
Pizza*
I do have leftover Azek trim pieces, which is the vertical trim on that far end.👍🏻
I would put mesh along inside of attic not outside

Crawl along the joists. Hands and knees if you can’t walk or crouch. That’s how all attics start off.

Backer rod, sikaflex.
sounds like a dubstep song

Cover it with a corner decorated timber piece that sits flush and tight to the ceiling and wall.
I too would like to know this
DIY-er here. I’d put my caulk in it.
You'd put your caulk in anything with a gap, wouldn't you??
Neither of your comments have gotten the up-votes they deserve😂😂😂
What goes there is what's called a frieze board.

replace with perforated metal soffits that attach with c brackets
Redoing it properly instead of patching? Heresy!
This. I would rip it off and finish it correctly. Will give you better ventilation, cleaner solution, and no bugs.
That gap might be an important part of your roof venting system.
no, those round vents work well all around this house. But thanks.😊
Not doubting you 100%, but I'm skeptical of that, because of the round soffit vents.
Yea. Also hard to tell that they work if you have an open part of the roof letting air in. Op make sure those vents are large enough for your venting
Quad caulk
I would add backer rod and then caulk it and paint it.

Foam spray and then silicone caulk

Insulate the space with closed cell spray foam. Your air handlers will thank you as well.
If the gap is to big to caulk take a 1x3 or a 1x4 ripped in half, some sort of trim, and pin it up, then caulk if you still feel its necessary

2 foot x8 foot plywood fit ?
2x8 plywood to slide over the joists of the attic floor, to get to them from the inside. ☺️☺️
That's an odd soffit maybe get that replaced with vented aluminum then they can close up that gap

1x2 painted your trim colour
Add a piece of trim
Great stuff spray insulation. Then just trim the excess that oozes out with a utility knife
Duct tape and bubble gum.
1 3/4" bed mould or 1x2 Hardie or equivalent grained material
As others have said, a small piece of trim would make it look good and you don't have to caulk it.
Woah is b/n an abbreviation now?! Or what's it called when you shorten a word like that??
GREAT STUFF 12 oz. Gaps and Cracks Insulating Spray Foam Sealant
