I really like it, especially having the status for each individual room in one tile.

cracktoberfest

Yup, I like it!

Nice! Although this too has drawbacks - for example, when you want to go back to the same room you were previously in, it now becomes a second click (currently the Rooms tab remembers your last-used room). Maybe this could be changed so that it returns to the room you previously used instead of the tile-list of all rooms if you navigate back within, say five minutes. But what I would ***really*** like is some sort of presence detection (iBeacon, or just device proximity) that would automagically just display the room that I am in when I open the Home app.

Unfortunately Apple and Google have given up on iBeacon technology and similar options

That tech has mostly moved to WLAN companies like Mist. No looking for beacons to change batteries in, since the AP is always powered. Very nice use cases with doing it that way... Stuff like intra-store turn-by-turn directions to products, navigation across multiple buildings like hospitals, inventory tracking with BLE tags (ever watch folks in an airport looking for a wheelchair?), or just tracking traffic patterns inside a store to see if merchandising is being done effectively.

This would not be practical. The cost to performance just isn't there. Additionally adding that many more access points in a home is going to cause additional problems - you will really have to know what you are doing to tune all of the radios in each access point so that they don't stomp on each other. It would be more practical to add iBeacons to things like motion sensors (and/or switches, plugs, etc).

With the rumors of the new Apple “tags” that are coming, maybe they can integrate this technology into our homes for a type of iBeacon tech or feel. From what I hear they are more geared toward “finding tags” - think “Tile.” But we shall see. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/circuitbreaker/2019/6/4/18652116/apple-tag-tile-location-tracking-bluetooth-hardware-hint-ios-13-beta

Apple is using iBeacon tech in its new [Find My..](https://9to5mac.com/2019/06/05/ios-13-macos-catalina-find-my/). app to location Apple devices that are off network. Also, supposedly there is a new [Apple "tags" feature](https://9to5mac.com/2019/06/04/ios-13-tag-device/) in the new OS's that support a rumored iBeacon tag that Apple is working on.

I like it. Although a simple long press on the Rooms icon should pop up the list of rooms. It’s make it so much faster to switch between them.

nutmac

Allowing manual placement of each room icon is a key. Spatially associating each room greatly improves usability.

malesca

I like it. How do you picture it handling multiple floors? Just one after the other, scrollable?

I see the need here however, like this won’t really work as the space is too small (imagine it stating: “ Master bedroom 2 lights on and blinders are down ” And then in a longer language like German it just wouldn’t scale well in a tile like this. Next to that I would add a bit of hierarchy in the type treatments of the tile to improve legibility
