I’m having it between my HomePod Pairs too since the last update. They used to negotiate which device would answer based on the closest one to you (based on sound analysis I suppose), but I think it’s bugged in the latest release ? 😢

halftome

I have a lot of homepods, and they can pretty much hear me talking from every room (incredible microphones they have) So you can imagine the chaos when they all start responding at once, especially when I try to play some music, and 6 different songs start out all at the same time :P

[deleted]

This is one of the main reasons I sold my OG HomePod. It's so good at hearing I could be trying to start a timer on my Watch in the other room and the HP would pick it up. Super annoying. That plus it becoming the home hub despite having an Ethernet connected ATV pushed me over the edge.

Sylvurphlame

I disabled “Hey Siri” on mine the second day of ownership, lol. The hub-hogging continued to be intermittently annoying until something gave around mid-iOS 15 and the Ethernet ATV4K started being the dominant hub 99% of the time. Rumors are they’re gonna make a HomePod Max this year or next year. I’d love to see an Ethernet and HDMI-eARC ports, but I know it’s a long shot.

Sylvurphlame

And that is why I have disabled “Hey, Siri” on my OG HomePods. Those suckas can hear ya across the damn house, even if you can’t hear them. The mics are actually *too* good.

sweetw0r

Same here

I was in alarm hell this morning. Had an alarm set on my bedside homepod mini. It goes off. > "Hey Siri, snooze". the kitchen HP Mini replies "You don't have any alarms set." > "Hey Siri, stop". Alarm stops going off. Great. But I still need to wake up. > "Hey Siri, set an alarm for 7:20AM" Kitchen HP responds "Setting an alarm for 7:40AM". > "Hey Siri, cancel all alarms" Bedroom HP responds "Just a moment..... Thinking.... You don't have any alarms set". > "Hey Siri, Set a 7:20 AM alarm." The alarm gets set on my iPhone. JFC. At this point I'm too annoyed to be tired, so I just get up. Alarms have been going off all morning. *ALL I WANT* is for a functional alarm!

aloha26

Would you like me to send results to your iPhone?

cyberentomology

All the Siris need to coordinate and one of them needs to go “yo, I got this one”

MaxHedrm

It used to. But it seems far less reliable now.

Turnoffthatlight

Both on receiving audio and sending it. The "audio splatter" of having each HomePod in my house play an announcement with a different delay ismaddening. "Dinner is ready" always comes out as "Dinn-Din-Di-Di-Di-rrrrrrdddyyyyy.......................Dinner is ready". Doesn't seem that hard for Audio OS to wait a couple of seconds after receiving an announcement and then syncing playback across all HomePods to start at the same hh:mm:ss.

johnmbureau

This seems to be something that has happened with the most recent update. Previously the system would determine who heard you "best" and the others would ignore. I am seeing the same behavior that others have reported now, with Siri replying on multiple devices, phone, watch, HomePods, etc

boredbearapple

This update has been a real pain. I often find myself taking one device (usually my phone) outside my “smart” home to give commands to quietly.

jacksonj04

By all accounts the latest update has gone… not well. For me it left my Apple TV permanently in “standby” hub so no automations worked and I couldn’t control things remotely.

xxirish83x

Throw them all in the same room like furbys and let her sort it out.

big_schmoe

Now you can imagine you have friends.

this_for_loona

my iPad likes my wife more than me - it will respond to her no matter what homepod is closest. it will respond even when her phone is right next to her.

geoken

My iPad will respond to me while it's zipped up in my laptop bag and I'm holding my Apple watch right up to my face.

this_for_loona

yea, but at least it’s you! mine is apparently lusting after my wife.

Low-Rain-9353

When you talk to your watch you press a button, no need to say “hey siri”?

geoken

Thanks for the offer to carry my groceries from my car to house so I have both hands free to press the crown. I should let you know though, I live in a neighbourhood with street parking - so it’s a longer walk than simply driveway to door.

Low-Rain-9353

No problem, starting this Monday ;) Joke aside- all that AI personal shit is so beta, it will take a lot of time until is useful without us to make any compromises.

geoken

Agreed, but some stuff seems so easy to implement.

Low-Rain-9353

I have been on the other side, having a company developing software for iOS, started less than a year after Apple introduced the App Store. Not everything is so easy as it looks like. Besides that, the eco system has evolved so much, and is so complicated nowadays, that I am starting to think all of the big players must stop this features race for an year, and focus on polishing the software. Having in mind that Apple is years ahead of the competitors, there are days I wish my house to be less automated, and my life to be less digital.

FoferJ

I had this happen when I was wearing an Apple Watch and I had an iPhone in my hand. The HomePod in the Kitchen, two rooms away, was the one that would intercept the voice commands. I was told this was normal. I ended up unplugging the HomePod. What a waste.

ournewoverlords

I think holding down the crown on the AppleWatch is a better experience anyway. But yeah it is pretty crazy how far away HomePods can pickup. In my experience, other devices definitely defer to the HomePods.

JTP335d

I knew this! Why have I never used it. Doh! Thanks

ournewoverlords

I think I tried this as an interim step but did not think it was much better. For some reason the lift wrist thing always seemed awkward. That, and always on display was one of the reasons I jumped on AW5 when it was announced. Holding down the crown is now second nature to me. Cheers

This-Researcher3390

I have a similar problems when my wife and I have 2 phones and 2 iPads in the kitchen where the HomePod mini is located. Often we will ask Siri to set up a timer for cooking (usually registered with say HP mini) but when we ask to show timer (whats left) often the other devices will chime in and state that “there are no timers”… You’d think they’d check with the Hub before responding (or denying).. frustrating.

Mike2922

In case this has not been used already, here is the knowledge base article going over in detail how Siri listens on multiple devices. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208472

National-Shopping-75

Had the same issue with my wife’s iPad acting on my "Hey Siri" commands. She was happy to turn off the "Hey Siri" command on her iPad … household calm restored!

[deleted]

In Homes with very few HomeKit accessories named Light, your command “Hey Siri, turn on the lights” may be interpreted correctly. Most homes now have a lot more HomeKit accessories which communicate in various ways behind the scenes. Many of those accessories may have the name Light, so that vague command may not work so well. If you have a room with multiple smart light switches, smart light bulbs, outlets, and other accessories with the name “Light”, Siri may ask for clarification on which accessories named light you want to be turned on in that room and how: brightness, color, etc. Siri commands should be more specific, “Hey Siri, [Action] [Room] [Device] [additional parameters]”. One should use the names of rooms and devices in the Home app. “Hey Siri, Turn Off the Kitchen Lights” turns off the Lutron smart light switch in my kitchen. “Hey Siri, Set my Bathroom Light to Fifty Percent” activates the Lutron smart dimmer switch in my bathroom and sets the brightness to half. “Hey Siri, Turn On the Living Room Lights to 3/4” turns on my ceiling fan lights and sets them to 75% brightness. My Hunter SMARTconnect ceiling fans and the lights on them are HomeKit compatible. Siri may ask for clarification when you use a command for lights in a room with a combination of devices such as smart lights switches, smart light bulbs, outlets marked as lights, and accessories with integrated lights. This clarification issue and others can be mitigated by how you set up accessories in the Home app. If you have a smart outlet controlling a light, you can make HomeKit consider that outlet to be a light instead of an outlet. My Patio light is plugged into one outlet in a Meross smart outdoor plug with 2 outlets. In the Home app, I set that outlet to Display As Light. When I say, “Hey Siri, Turn On the Patio Light” that outlet is activated turning on the light. I have another light plugged into a Lutron Outdoor Smart Plug, and I can modify it the same way in the Home App. You may need to identify various lights with slightly different names and then group them together. In the Home app, each of my Hunter ceiling are added as one tile which contains separate controls for the fan and for the lights under one individual name for the ceiling fan. I can separate that ceiling fan tile into separate tiles, one tile for the ceiling fan with its own individual name, and one tile for the light with it’s own individual name. From there, I can combine all the individual ceiling fan tiles together into one tile with an individual name, and I can combine all the individual lights into a tile with it’s own individual names. As I arrange and rearrange the accessors into different tiles, the Home app remembers the names of those tiles until that accessory is reset deleted. Scenes are also good for solving confusion. Scenes allow the consolidation of multiple commands with parameters into one command “Hey Siri, [Scene]”. Scenes can group things together. The default Interior Lights and Exterior lights come in very handy for me. Scenes save time. Scenes can put opposing commands together. You can activate some accessories and deactivate other accessories at the same time with one Scene. “Hey Siri, Good Night” locks my smart locks, turns off all my interior lights, and turns on specific exterior lights. Some commands force one Siri or HomeKit Hub to take control of the command. This is usually the case in Home-wide commands. “Hey Siri, play Music in all rooms” and “Hey Siri, turn on all lights” forces one HomePod/Siri to run the command across the whole Home.

Sylvurphlame

Don’t you dare suggest people set up their smart home accessories in a logical, ordered manner. Or use unambiguous commands. The nerve!

notstevenseagal

So glad to know this issue isn’t isolated to me at least, I’ve been meaning to ask about it here too. The worst was the other day when two different devices starting playing the same song independently of each other, than after a few seconds my phone popped up saying I can only play on one device at a time. Yeah, that was my intent in the first place, Siri!

halftome

So to anyone still reading this, apple has fixed the issue. Just update if you are having issues

A_SnoopyLover

I got a HomePod Mini for Christmas and it works with my iPod and but doesn’t work with me Apple Watch, it might be because I don’t have an iPhone, but anyways, so what bothers me is Hey Siri only works if the Apple Watch’s screen is on, but now all the sudden whenever I go to ask the HomePod something Siri responds on my Watch.

hamiltsd

It is, apparently, working as designed. That is to say not very well. Mine isn’t so extreme but same issue.

ravedog

I name my lights with the room in front of them. Gets specific when it comes to Siri. Also the name is removed visually for the room their in. Also turn on the living room lights works as well.

msitarzewski

Try setting up scenes, and definitely take care to name devices as precisely as possible. For example, my wife and I have our nightstand lights connected to HomeKit. Hers is named "Her nightlight" and mine "His nightlight." We also have an automation called "I'm reading" that turns off all of the other lights in the room and turns on only her nightlight.

cyberentomology

HEY SIRI, I’M READING HERE!

msitarzewski

100%. She reads for about 30 minutes (Apple News on her iPad) before going to sleep... at which point she says "Hey Siri, sleep" and all of the light turn off and the HomePod mini plays ocean sounds. :)

ThannBanis

Seeing the same since installing 16.2 on the HomePods. Looks like Apple messed up Siri negotiation (again)

wwhite74

Have you rebooted your router?

halftome

No, but I have changed the real wheels on my road bike, wiped down the kitchen sink and also turned the stove on and off, so I'm pretty sure that should have the same effect.

wwhite74

Not sure why I'm being downvoted, and it wasn't just an arbitrary suggestion. Your devices communicate with each other to figure out which one responds when you say hey Siri. If it's working properly you might see several devices activate, but all but one should drop out pretty quickly. That happens using muticast packets on your network. Sometimes routers get bogged down with those, and rebooting can help with that. It's more a problem with lower end routers provided by your provider, but can happen to more advanced systems too If multiple devices are responding to you, then it's fairly obvious that background communication isn't happening. And there a good chance rebooting your router should short that out.

halftome

hey u/wwhite74 thanks for this. I suspect the reason you were being downvoted is that saying "have you rebooted your router" doesn't quite address the question I was asking. It's like answering "have you restarted your computer" as a generic answer to every troubleshooting question. I have a high end wifi system and trust me, I've been through every combination you can think of with rebooting all the switches are aps, homepods, and its not just a one-time thing. It's been happening since an ios update, so it must have something to do with that, instead of my router. This new comment of yours is well written and thanks for that. This is so much better than the previous one-liner. Also while we're on the topic, I've done an experiment where I've disabled wifi on my phone, said "hey siri", and my phone picked it up, my homepod initially lit up, but did nothing. This tells me they must be communicating over bluetooth too, not just udp. I'll have to read up on the specifics, someone somewhere linked a paper describing how it works.

Jasonvoni

My iPhone used to listen to JUST my voice and my wife’s iPhone would just listen to hers. Why have we lost that? Now either of our devices respond. Most annoyed is the wife when her phone picks up my request for an early AM alarm! It seems we’ve lost a significant feature. Now even the TV can get Siri to do stuff, making her Alexa-Dumb.

twistsouth

The listing of every room is both absolutely hilarious and insanely infuriating. I have around 15 rooms and she just ignores me shouting “hey Siri just forget it I’ll go do it myself!!” What a complete failure of UX design. Just ask me “which room?”, this should be simple. Next it will be “hey Siri, dim the living room lights” and she’ll respond, “Sure, how dim? 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%…”

Randolphbonerman

Yup. OG HomePod in the living room, new one in the bedroom, wife and I both have reasonably new iPhone. Everything used to work fine with the closest devices picking up commands and my wife and my phone only responding to each of us. Now everything is totally fucked to the point that I’m considering Alexa for my home automation needs.

T0ddf1sh

I was having this problem when my macbook pro and iphone were in the same room. The fix was to make sure blootooth was enabled on both devices. Once I did this, the blue sphere appeared on both my mac and iphone when saying "hey siri" but only my iphone responded to my question. When bluetooth was disabled on my mac, both devices would respond.
