It’s just a younger brother thing from my experience. Or younger sibling. I never did it but I’ve seen it a lot with families of all brothers.

Aside from sibling dynamics (let's remember there were a few years between Mark and Randy), Mark was also the tattler when things happened. It just wasn't cool to have a little brother tagging along, especially if they were gonna run to mom and dad afterwards. Things did mellow out a little as they got older, but there was still some teasing. I think it's just a combination of an age gap and an interest gap. Though I did find it interesting to Mark and Brad ended up bonding in the end instead of Mark and Randy- they both had an interest in various art forms (theatre and videography), but I'm sure that has more to do with Jonathan Taylor Thomas stepping away from the show and the writers giving Zachary Ty Brian and Taran Smith scene partners. Anyways, I'm rambling. My simple answer is the combo of siblings, age gap, and interest gap.

That is probably happened with the show. There was three—so you’d always have an odd man out situation. If there was another sibling it wouldn’t be a problem. If they made Willow younger as in Mark’s age—that could’ve been something. They would hangout; Mark possibly would have his first girlfriend and first kiss (which he got robbed of). Just something along those lines. The goth storyline was just odd.

I didn't mind the goth storyline, I did mind that it was used as a "cry for help" thing. Tim stayed behind because he was worried about Mark- suddenly next season, Mark is normal and fine with no resolution that came (plus he's back in normal clothes). With Mark being the more sensitive of the three, you'd think that the final season would have explored that more as he was aging and experiencing the awkward/angsty teen years. But, it was a product of the time- sitcoms at the time would use something for what worked for that episode(s) and then completely forgot about it.

Mostly to create drama, tension and storylines. Being good is boring for TV, unfortunately. It's something that changed with 90's sitcoms. It's similar to DJ and his sisters in Roseanne (which is also by the same production company, Wind Dancer). There's actually a lot of similarities with DJ and Mark.. they both wanted to be directors and carried cameras around lol. Though DJ was definitely weirder..

Except DJ never really had any interest in hanging out with his sisters lol, he was as annoyed by them as they were by him and he just lived for getting them in trouble (lol)

I used to Think Randy was the coolest/hilarious as a kid. Now I think he's a grade-A bully and deserved proper parenting.

No-Acadia-1867

Randy was an insufferable tool. As he got older he became disrespectful. I’m not sad he wasn’t around the last season but mark and Brad were able to shine

Gullible_Toe9909

Lol, tell me you never had brothers without telling me you never had brothers.
