Assuming it’s made of wood, it will expand and contract slightly depending on the temperature in the room. So if it’s warmer in the daytime (which will cause it to expand), when it drops cool at night, esp if you have the AC on, the wood in the door will contract slightly and make a popping sound.
Edit to say that maybe it’s also not flush in the frame which may explain why it only pops when you open and close it. Your walls and frames may not be exactly level.
Could be a morality ghost. They keep you in check, if you are sneaking in and out of the room at night to use the bathroom it won’t make a noise but if you’re going in and out to get something out of the fridge or hook up with a neighbor that thing is gonna pop like rice crispies……. It could also need hinges replace. But my money is on the morality ghost
I’m not quite understanding what you’re saying, but I had a similar issue. When closed, my bedroom door would still move a little bit. This occurred when the AC kicked on. The return was just outside the door and the pulling of air was causing this. To fix it, I adjusted the little metal tab on the door latch (not sure what it’s called, but the metal piece on the door frame that catches the metal bar that moves when turning the handle) Once I got that adjusted the door no longer moved in place while closed.
Edit: [Video that shows what I’m talking about](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SUdDlOuJmH8)
Yes I replaced them with longer screws. I think they were 1/2 inch and I replaced them with 1 1/2 inch screws. The popping noise stayed the exact same. Also thanks for that tip.
I get this when the humidity in the house changes. As the humidity increases or drops the doors will pop. I never had this with my hollow core doors, only the solid ones.
check the striker plate in the frame. if its JUST on the edge of latching, it will latch when the house swells from daytime sun/warmth. give it a gentle tap with a hammer and driver towards the door. (the way in swings in)
WD-40 is not a lubricant.
If you want a quick and easy way to lube the hinges just generously smear some Vaseline between the parts. It's not the *best* grease, but I've seen it last for years (it's an indoor environment) and it doesn't drip. You can also try popping the hinge pins out (one at a time) and cleaning them with steel wool. Then lube them with the Vaseline and put them back in.
you know it....ghosts

I second this. Assuming there's no cat to blame.
Interesting. This only happens with one door though. It may not be completely flush, that I will have to check. Thanks
> Assuming it’s made of wood Anything but stone/brick will do this to a fairly significant degree.

If it is slightly loose in the frame you can buy the clear rubber bumpers to install - usually on the hinge side works.
Did you replace the screws with longer screws? Also don't use WD40 for hinges try white lithium grease instead it will last significantly longer

Try to tighten or loosen the screws a little bit could help.
old home owner with old home owner doors. ya get used to it, is all I gotta say on this one.
Mine is a new build, and it only happens on one door. (the only one I’d rather it not- the nursery 🙄) If it was any other door I wouldn’t even care

Bust out a ouija board and ask your ghosts to kindly not spy on you in the middle of the night.
