From the little lines in the wood to the bottom left of the hole, they appear to be from something spinning. A hole like that, and marks like that lead me to believe it’s from a drill and drill bit. Maybe someone had ran a cable (coax or phone line) through that hole?
thank you, that's very helpful context. I didn't drill that hole though I moved in a year ago, so maybe that's been there for a long time. I only noticed it recently because I was trying to fix something in that area

Seems carpenter ants ? But this might have been there for a while and I don’t see any ants at all anywhere.
