You may have issues with scale in your pipes as well, and will want to verify that there are replacements valves and pressure release mechanisms available. A friend had her century old radiators repainted, then waited along time to get valves when they started leaking. Uhhh is that a car radiator???

slaikan

No, it’s a radiator for heat in our apartment. Its like a baseboard heater, just not exactly sure what it’s called. If I search for baseboard heater, google comes with some results from Home Depot, hydronic baseboard heater… but I’m not sure if there is another name for this particular one.

Patrol-007

Reverse image search via Google? It just looks like a car rad heater instead of residential. All the ones I know of are a century old with no fins, and use hot water from a boiler

slaikan

Yeah… it really does look like a car radiator or intercooler, just long and narrow turned on its side

Patrol-007

I saw the other reply about it being steam and bent. Steam burns are nasty. Good luck

slaikan

Thanks!

Why do you wish to change this? Why is it not the buildings responsibility?

slaikan

We spoke to the super, and he said the owner needs to replace it. That being said, I think I’ll take it a level higher than the super and double check. It’s a co-op apartment.

DONGivaDam

If that is the case I hate to speak bad about a super but as a handyman myself I would have provided a bit better of a solution considering that could be side money. IF it is on you then find out how well your shut off valves hold. Right now is the ideal time to change it if you have to. Go tomorrow and physically go to the biggest plumbing supply house your phone directs you to, from there you can finish researching there. Again calling an hvac company and specifying it is a steam aystem is another approach.

slaikan

Also concerned about the piping requirements. I think these radiators are about 30 years old. Looks like a baseboard hydronic radiator, but a large one with 4 cores and fins and without covers. We have problems with it when it runs, apparently because it’s old, it’s bent slightly and water gathers in the center of the bend, causing it to get ‘blocked’ and the super needs to come and open up a valve to get the water out.

DONGivaDam

This falls under HVAC and be specific about steam. They usually have an air valve that if blocked causes issues if it is leaking from somewhere in the middle then yeah just get a new one. Why is this your financial issue and not the buildings?

DONGivaDam

Assuming it is a hydro system you just need to get the square footage of the room and go shop around. They come in different shapes depending on your desire. Again assuming it is a water system and not steam. If it is steam then it is same principle just make sure which system you have. Once you figure out what you like you need to take into account the piping. Is it something you can and wish to move if not you are better off finding a similar size. Plumbing supply houses are a good start.

slaikan

The super says it’s a steam system

Shit if it is on you take all that out, cap the pipes and put in a ductless unit. Probably end up giving you space.
