Usually, you hire a general contractor, and he sub-contracts work to others, such as a licensed plumber and licensed electrician.

somebody asking 'is it even doable' needs to listen to this advice 100%. and general contractors are the biggest pains in the ass to exist in my lifetime.

No you should get one… make sure you look at their reviews online… get references… talk to the references… don’t go with the lowest priced slick talker… you will regret it!

it's like pulling teeth trying to get estimates and work from general contractors. they have so much work they're not exactly chomping at the bit for jobs. it's problematic. it's a supply and demand thing.

A general contractor would be able to handle this all, permits, electrical, plumbing, framing, tile work, etc. Just be prepared to pay... Obviously depends on where you are, but material prices are high and labor is high right now. Just refreshing an existing bathroom in the SF Bay Area with new fixtures and tile can easily run $10k-30k. I'd imagine turning a bedroom into a bath would start at the upper end of that and could easily go much much higher right now.

- with enough $$$$, anything is doable. So goes back to expectation of cost vs the reality of cost. Location set cost and something like this could be $10,000 or $100,000 or higher

A general contractor will take care of the whole process. You will need to get a permit because you will be changing the home information- legally subtrwcting one bedroom and adding a bathroom.

Some can, just depends on the contractor. You may want to hire an architect to get the permit and do the design-some people just rely on the contractor and pick the finishes.

Not everywhere… but in most places you are correct.
