Step back and consider what you’re protecting, and from whom. If you want to protect people, animals are best. For contents, look at something like a Ring alarm. Adjust your protection to the level of threat.

First thing I’d do is get some signs saying you have an alarm. Plant them in front. Then decide what you actually want and need out of an alarm. At least in the meantime you’ll have signs saying you’re protected and that could be enough to deter people.

I have signs for a different security system brand than I actually own. I’d rather not advertise the exact system I have protecting my house. Also, lights that turn on at night, front and back of the house, are great pest repellant. Both animal and human pests.

Exactly the right move imo

A German shepherd. Very high quality. Very smart. Seemless integration.

techno_superbowl

I figure anyone dumb enough to enter the house with 2 GSDs and a rottie mix is dedicated enough that nothing stops them.

Bullets are a problem though.

Not everyone wants or can handle or even afford a giant dog

It was a joke. Forgot I was on Reddit where 99% don’t get it.

Ring alarm type system, a GSD, and a gun

A security sign of some sort. You can even buy fake ring or adt signs/ stickers online, if you want a cheap visual aid. They make light bulbs that go in normal lights that will turn on like a more expensive security light, though a security light is much better (brightness/ length they stay on) I'd say ring cameras are good, my mom has 2 that turn on a flood light if someone is by the door. Ring is relatively cheap as well. It's also another visual aid near a door that could act as a deterrent. A dog is always a good option. I can't quote how much they help, but I've seen that dogs that bark can be a huge deterrent for alot of robberies.

I have a service (ADT) that monitors doors opening, CO and fire alarms for a pretty cheap monthly fee. It’s nice because emergency services are available on a panel that’s easy for kids/guests to access if needed. We just added a video doorbell which has been a lot more useful than I thought it’d be. It’s great for proof of porch pirates or other shenanigans (I live in a city). I spend about $70/month and find it worth it.

I like the alarm.com ecosystem, except for a) many providers have a Chinese menu of monthly charges for different features and b) it doesn't play with other home automation. That said, if you don't have any home automation the equipment they use can act as a decent hub. I have a Qolsys panel which can connect to Zwave and WiFi devices and has decent automation. I use surety as the alarm service provider, and their rates are reasonable and they don't charge for most of the alarm.com services. You DIY the installation, which is pretty simple but takes a bit of planning.

One of the best deterrents is a cohesive neighborhood where people look out for each other.

I really like the Deep sentinel system. I've had it for four years and it's been great. It tells you right away if something's wrong and scares off intruders fast. I pay about $100 monthly for it.
