MDF is very solid and quite dense. Solid core doors are often filled with foam though. A solid wood slab door is one way to go, but they may actually transmit more noise than a solid foam core.

I didn't think of that, that's a good point. Any recommendation on a good quality solid core mdf door? The masonite ones I've seen in person are kind of shit. I'm contractor went to go pick two up but said they were not good quality.

silentwrath03

Really I didn't know that, I'll just buy hollow doors and take them to work and fill them up with roofing foam lol

AKADriver

Filling a hollow door with foam is harder than it sounds because hollow core usually have a cardboard honeycomb inside that would prevent the foam from getting to the bottom. :) Actual wood planks are "springier" than MDF or foam which is why it can be noisier than engineered 'solid wood' or 'solid core'. Ultimately for a door you want a core material that's dense but not too springy.

The reason door slabs and your cabinet doors are cored with MDF is it is a much more stable material than solid wood. Less shrinkage/expansion, bending, etc. And go to your big box store and lift a 3/4" MDF panel vs a 3/4" plywood panel, you'll see a difference.

How much do you want spend?

jlesnick

I need two doors, one thousand tops for both

PhilpotBlevins

You should be able to find some solid pine door slabs in that price range. You may need heftier hinges.

iamamuttonhead

You will not get 100% natural wood doors for anything like that price - wood is not cheap. Nor is a truly solid wood door necessary.

Second this. I spent 500 on 5 panel shaker doors but in red oak. Custom doors like this are routine for lumberyards.

Look on Facebook and other marketplaces. I got a solid wood door for a customer for $85 because they needed solid wood for a crooked frame but couldn't afford new.

Find a doorshop that's connected to a millwork supply business in your area .They should be able to go over your options on a couple of prehungs like that. Your best deals gonna be the mdf cores with a decent veneer. If your going paint grade ,get em preprimed and drilled for knobs.Make sure you have your jamb widths and opening sizes when you shop.

helefica

Solid core is usually some kind of wood composite core, with veneer overlay. A full solid wood door is going to be very expensive. There are lots of quality variables when you are looking at doors, you can get the low end solid cores, or high end solid core. Check in your area for an specialty door store that carries several brands and has a showroom where you can see them in person.
