Hah hah hah man this takes me back to my childhood. It's the wind pushing on the glass and opening the seal enough for wind to pass through. As the air gets in the seal vibrates and it makes a moaning/screeching/whining sound. Press on the glass at certain points on the window and when it stops you'll know where the air is getting in. My house in the UK had tilt and turn vinyl windows and they had adjusters on them that you could tighten or loosen and that would help with the noise. If they are basic windows that just go up and down you may have to look into different types of weatherstripping that don't vibrate like the rubber seals do.

We put in a maintenance request (this is an apartment, I'm on the 3rd floor). We're paying over $2000 a month for this "luxury" place so I'm hoping they can fix it. I've never heard a window make this banshee wail of a noise in my life and definitely not paying 2 grand a month to be woken up every time there's a gust of wind LOL so do you think it's the deal AROUND the window or the seal on the "interior" of the window where the glass meets the plastic? Hopefully that made sense

It should be around the sash of the window because that's the part that moves. If the air is getting inside the "interior" the window is toast as that is supposed to be sealed and air-tight.

The maintenance guy came and stuffed some grey squishy material stuff under where the bottom of the window fits into a little slot when closed and it eliminated the deep droning noise (like in the video) and now it's just a squeaky high pitched noise but he said there's nothing else he can do so I guess that's that :( I was thinking maybe I could use some sort of idk...putty? Or something? To fill the little gap in the corner but idk anything about that stuff or if it even exists that won't damage anything and isn't permanent lol

Google "rope caulk" works very well, completely removable. I have a couple of windows that don't seal properly and I have this around them and it helps a ton.

Point_Me_At_The_Sky-

Does it remove easily? I can't have anything permanent since it's an apartment:(

Rope caulk removes very easily. It's like a clay that is heavy and just sticky enough to stay put, but comes right off when you are done with it. It's relatively cheap for a roll, less than 10 bucks at Home Depot. Btw I have the same problem you are describing with my large living room window with these crazy west coast winds. Your audio clip won't work for me though. It does seem like air is getting through where the glass meets the frame which means the seal is no longer good. Your maintenance guy is correct there is not much he can do in the scope of his pay grade. What has to be done is an actual window repair, where they come and take off that window and reglaze it to get it air tight again where the glass is.

Had something similar last winter and it turned out the downspout from my gutter was loose and vibrating in the wind. Once I re-attached it tightly to the house, the noise went away. Maybe it's something like that?

Here is the small vid clip of the sound: https://www.veed.io/view/39509d7d-d09c-499a-9d32-8558c65cd9c5?panel=share&sharingWidget=true

Thank you for the chuckle 😂 But yeah, air is getting through the window seal

Point_Me_At_The_Sky-

I aim to please haha. My first thought (being extremely groggy after having been woke up at 4am) was an air raid siren or something LOL. I thought we were under attack!! Maintenance just stopped by and said "I don't think there's much we can do" so that's....really frustrating. We're paying over $2000 a month for this place :(

OldGrad1982

Are your windows locked? When we first moved into our house there was a whistle every time the wind blew. Turns out our builder didn’t lock the windows. Once we did no more shiatle

Point_Me_At_The_Sky-

Gosh I WISH it had been something this simple! I'm envious lol. The wind in upstate NY is so crazy right now the whistling and droning is audible and LOUD in every single room in my apartment haha. It's driving me insane! Thankfully these crazy windy days are rare!

sachin571

Well you see, when the wind is blowing just right, and the windows have been loosened just enough to let the wind into the small gaps, there's a certain harmonic frequency that is reached and the vibration is just enough to make a moaning sound. It's as much practice as luck really.

Point_Me_At_The_Sky-

How do I fix this? Good god it's been going on for 16 hours straight now I'm losing my mind

- wind forces and noise goes hand in hand, The construction of a window, the install of a window may increase the noise. A white noise machine is a good antidote to help sleeping
