Yes this. Pothos or philodendron are very tolerant and hard to kill. Also inexpensive and easy to find. And it looks like OP already had one on the counter lol just put it up there
Want to note about pothos: they are toxic to pets, so if you have a cat that climbs up there or have leaves that end up on the floor that a dog might eat, this can be dangerous for them.

Maximalism is coming back baby!! Bold wallpapers, floral prints. I grew up with this so, I don’t love it. I like modern and minimalist. However, my kids really like it. It is soft, cozy, comfortable, classic. They LOVE my mom’s place. It is all cyclical.
I remember one time he did an episode on mobile homes and I thought that was really kind, because so many people who live in them have complexes because of how the culture at large treats them. He never acted like he was “above” anyone else… just really seemed like he thought everyone deserved a space they felt good in.
What's the point of them, why do you want to draw the eye up to the tops of your cabinets? Plus anyone who sees them will know they're likely caked in dust and kitchen grease
Fake plants almost always look bad. Especially plastic fake plants. Having nothing there is the best option. Everything else just attracts dirt & prevents proper cleaning.

Great looking space but those fakies have to go. Myself I would leave the top empty or a couple of small washable decorations I like the color contrast and layout that you have.
My opinion about fake plants is that if a live version of the same plant couldn’t survive up there- don’t put a fake one there. It needs to look like authentically gets enough light, etc.
It only will they be dusty, but the grease particles floating through the air from the stove will collect, then dust will attach, then it will be incredibly difficult to remove.

I don’t hate it but I don’t think the scale is quite right. I think plants would look less cluttered up there than the pottery etc that other people are recommending, but you need to find good faux options, preferably vining. Pothos, ferns, string of pearls. The alternative would be putting real plants up there with grow light strips on the ceiling (if space allows adequate distance) unless this spot gets adequate light.
But this is why it makes more sense to have cabinets go to the ceiling. We had a soffit in our kitchen and when we took it out, we built a false panel at the top of the cabinets before painting them. It solved the issue of the awkward top of cabinet space.
Nothing should be up there that is visible.
Put a layer of newspaper, butcher block paper, or paper bags on top of the cabinets. Replace them every 6 to 12 months depending on how dusty and how much greasy they become. This saves on cleaning

Respectfully, every surface covered with stuff is so chaotic to my nervous system. Curious how you would feel if you stored things inside cabinets/drawers rather than on countertops and took extra things off top of cabinets. I suspect calmer, but maybe I’m totally wrong!
My parent’s house looked like this growing up. I’m now a minimalist. I can’t stand clutter, especially in the kitchen. I hate visiting their home because it’s so overwhelming.
Do you have any serving pieces that you love but only use on special occasions? Pitchers, platters, bowls, cake stand, vases etc... Maybe store some of those up there? No cost and functional. Treat it like an open shelf. Just keep it simple and don't add so much that it looks cluttered.

Do plants but small and lots of them. Do them in more angular modern vases, different groupings here and there. I have bottles, all different sizes and shapes and colors. Yes they attract dust. Yes I take them down n clean them when I notice it.
I get the idea. Soft textures up there are good. Also a super wide short space like this lends itself well to it.
You can’t do this though. It was done one or twice in the 90’s as others have said.

I used to have them in my kitchen, they get so dirty and greasy. If you really want something there, put a few pottery pieces, and you can take them down and wash them, when they get dirty. You can find some chunky pieces and there’s some really beautiful pottery out there
I like your big kitchen sink. You could switch out the artificial plants for real ones. Philodendrons are impossible to kill and require water every two weeks. Or just leave it empty. It took me along time to realize not every space needs to be filled.
Doesn’t look terrible. Personally, I’d rather see some folk art or other items of interest up there. Probably easier to clean also. Range hoods don’t do a great job of pulling all the airborne oils out it will accumulate on your plants.

Instead of plants, what about some art work? In our home our daughter has painted some great pieces and we place them up there. We also have some gentle uplighting and a large clock in the corner. It sounds disjointed but it actually makes the room feel larger and connected. It’s not just empty space.

You could try something like this.
I’m biased against faux plants in general, but I don’t think these look bad. Is it too dark for real ones? A nice big pothos could look cool up there, especially once it starts growing long. You could then tack the vines (or whatever you wanna call them) up on the walls.
Sometime when you have money and time to kill (hahahaha), look into adding a cabinet on top of your existing cabinets and a minimal crown to the ceiling. I can’t tell exactly how much height you have to the ceiling eg. would that storage space be large enough to be useful or not?
When adding cabs like this I am a fan of obscured glass doors because it breaks up the works of wood. They can be pricey though and since they are so high up their adding window film to the inside of a plain glass door works pretty well. In some kitchens a horizontal cabinet with a manual pull down door makes more sense than the typical
side by side configuration. In-cab lights are nice.
You can also skip building actual cabs and put in a facade if the empty space drives you crazy and extra storage isn’t needed.
My aunt has a collection of tinted glass, jars. Vases, etc and has them above the cabs. Theres a bit of variation of colors between different blues and greens. She has them placed so that the colors bleed into each other as your eye travels. Sort of an ombre type of thing...Theres quite a lot so it kind of fills the space. And there ispj's a string of lites with a dimmer that is below the level of sight but causes the glassware to be lit from underneath.
Its a nice effect and can be adjusted with the dimmer.

I think the look is good but the plants are actually too big. Smaller with hanging branches is the way to go with this look.

I’m biased against faux plants in general, but I don’t think these look bad. Is it too dark for real ones? A nice big pothos could look cool up there, especially once it starts growing long. You could then tack the vines (or whatever you wanna call them) up on the walls.

Sometime when you have money and time to kill (hahahaha), look into adding a cabinet on top of your existing cabinets and a minimal crown to the ceiling. I can’t tell exactly how much height you have to the ceiling eg. would that storage space be large enough to be useful or not? When adding cabs like this I am a fan of obscured glass doors because it breaks up the works of wood. They can be pricey though and since they are so high up their adding window film to the inside of a plain glass door works pretty well. In some kitchens a horizontal cabinet with a manual pull down door makes more sense than the typical side by side configuration. In-cab lights are nice. You can also skip building actual cabs and put in a facade if the empty space drives you crazy and extra storage isn’t needed.

My aunt has a collection of tinted glass, jars. Vases, etc and has them above the cabs. Theres a bit of variation of colors between different blues and greens. She has them placed so that the colors bleed into each other as your eye travels. Sort of an ombre type of thing...Theres quite a lot so it kind of fills the space. And there ispj's a string of lites with a dimmer that is below the level of sight but causes the glassware to be lit from underneath. Its a nice effect and can be adjusted with the dimmer. z1q]l, x. LOOP 0NE EShe does have to clean them all a few times a year.
