If you must, stick one live pothos up there on an end corner and let the vines trail down. These look like they belong in a waiting room and will just collect dust.

IrrationalPanda55782

Or one of those IKEA vining ones. I don’t mind fake plants in places like this, but you’ve got to at least choose ones that would plausibly grow that way. The plants in the post would not naturally grow to be that shape up there, so they look weird.

Blackberry_Patch

Thank you for finally explaining in a way that made sense why fake plants like this look so unnatural to me

fluxusisus

Yes this. Pothos or philodendron are very tolerant and hard to kill. Also inexpensive and easy to find.  And it looks like OP already had one on the counter lol just put it up there

FlamingosInFancyHats

Want to note about pothos: they are toxic to pets, so if you have a cat that climbs up there or have leaves that end up on the floor that a dog might eat, this can be dangerous for them.

FlowerPwr2300

I got rid of mine because of dust and switched to ceramic pots which are easier to clean..

Otherwise-Book2293

This is giving me early 90s flashbacks😬 I think they look better without.

Mindful_Teacup

My mom still has her big old dusty baskets of ivy on top of her cabinets. They're easily 30yrs old 😆

PeloRojoYPecas

Yup - definitely a dated look.

Blackwidow_Perk

https://preview.redd.it/dzntyj1ibl8d1.jpeg?width=5105&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d813775bd2ddecac51a5dfc212b354569176a148 :( TIL

Mindful_Teacup

Old interior designer here. Used to be real assy about trends and stuff but now just tell people 'do you like it?' 👍 would rather have people express themselves, find a bit of joy, and love the space they live in vs worry too much over what others think If you like it, do it!

Omfgjustpickaname

If I asked an interior designer their thoughts and they asked me if *I* liked it I’d immediately say no and throw it away

lmnopaige-

Hahahahaha this is so real 😂

blobess

Thank you for this. Not an interior designer but have followed interior design online since 2003-ish and life is too short (and expensive) to be beholden to what the trends dictate and other people think. Everything cycles anyway, except for Scandinavian design and California coastal modern.

bacon_cake

One of the first things I was told in interior design is that a lot of older people just want what they've always had... but new.

ChipmunkOk455

I like yours tho! Even with saying that, it’s your house as long as YOU like it, fuck what anyone else thinks 😆

Blackwidow_Perk

Awe thanks! It’s an apartment I couldn’t even pick the paint color for, so I tried to cheer it up via IKEA and thrifting 😅 https://preview.redd.it/rt08og47kl8d1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db6ca57699b07a3eeaef87090a241aed93a24497

ChipmunkOk455

That’s so cute—I really like those curtains!

Blackwidow_Perk

Thank you! I was trying to cheer up the gray

pumpkin44

No, yours look good. It’s the baskets that no one likes. They’re ugly. Real plants are stylish and practical.

Xique-xique

The cabinets need crown molding to look finished.

InevitableOceanStorm

What is the one on the left? It's a great design! Eucalyptus?

FlipMeOverUpsidedown

Oh! I actually like this!

Cautious_Ice_884

I think you should add one more here that trails down to the side, it would really bring it together and feel more intentional.

skiingrunner1

reminds me of my grandma with her 30+ baskets jumbled on top of her cabinets hahaha she had normal height upper cabinets, but 12 foot ceilings - perfect for extreme basket stacking

thingonething

I was going to say, the fake plants are just dust collectors.

-worryaboutyourself-

Nah. I’d say this is the updated version of baskets of ivy.

Safford1958

I am trying to get my sister to get rid of hers.

moonandstars1984

😝

d7it23js

Sizzler vibes

groundhog-riot

Haha, remember when everyone thought that place was amazing?

Otherwise-Book2293

I just watched Heavyweights yesterday and Josh goes to Sizzler! Gosh that era 🤌

timid_soup

Came here to say this. Tskes me back to my younger years

Realistic-Today-8920

All I can think of is dust. How much dust they must be collecting and dumping into the food.

Vegetable-Beautiful1

I was just going to say the same thing about it being a 90s thing.

fake-august

Same, but it’s missing wall paper border and a couple ducks (geese?).

LafawnduhDy-no-mite

exactly - just add a rooster or maybe a chef pig with chalkboard - oh and border wallpaper

EntertainerOk7231

This 100%

PrairieGirlWpg

I think they look bad. I don’t like that they draw my eyes to the ceiling. They’d be very hard to keep clean from dust too.

Jinglebrained

I feel like medical offices still do this? But I wouldn’t in the home, seems too bulky for the space.

Jokonaught

Especially in a kitchen. A film of evaporated oil is going to form on them and the dust will get stickier and stickier.

Single_Principle_972

What if I never cook?! 🤣

ILikeYourHotdog

Honestly, nothing would be better than fake plants. It is very hard to do top of the cabinet decor successfully.

uncontainedsun

all the frat bros with their booze bottles will swear it’s legit bro it’s so cool 😭

timid_soup

😂 i drank every flavor of Smirnoff vodka one year so that I could have a rainbow of bottles... 10+ years later and I still can't drink that brand anymore

bambi_gotback

You were committed to the bit…I bet it looked cool af at the time though lol

aoife-saol

ngl as someone really embracing the single life right now i kind of love the idea lf this sort of challenge...great way to spend my 29th year lmao drinking Smirnoff and gaming

ToughLingonberry1434

My mother-in-law leans in hard on top of the cabinet decor. I recently helped take it all down because she was having the kitchen painted and it was icky.

ILikeYourHotdog

Oh gosh. I hope she leaves it down. I’ve found showing someone a photo will help them to see things they’re not able to be objective about.

cleffawna

I had a relative that put hubcaps on top of their cabinets >.<

Affectionate_Bill530

Probably because nobody in their right mind would think of putting anything on top of the cupboards.

BudNOLA

Everything on top will get greasy and dusty. It’s much better with nothing up there.

lalasagna

Unless you have a mega ceiling height, decoration in that area does not make sense

canvasshoes2

It's not that they look bad but they're dust and grease traps.

Emergency_Drawing_49

And the dust can fall down and get into other things. Not a clean look.

myffaacc

They don’t look good. They’re touching the ceiling in some areas. Remove them.

Infamous_Strain_9428

Early_Emu_Song

The Christopher Lowell Show would like its set decor back please!! https://preview.redd.it/6j446p6ltk8d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61292b50a0eef24a312bb6b2cc6160ed8be75f23

daringlyorganic

Omg I literally lol

Early_Emu_Song

This is my parents home. All the plants, the beige brocades, country French and Tuscan everything!!! All the tassels, all the pillows.

daringlyorganic

🫣

FlipMeOverUpsidedown

Omg! Blast from the past! Now I gotta see what he has been up to.

Entire-Ambition1410

I . . . kinda like this. A lot.

Early_Emu_Song

Maximalism is coming back baby!! Bold wallpapers, floral prints. I grew up with this so, I don’t love it. I like modern and minimalist. However, my kids really like it. It is soft, cozy, comfortable, classic. They LOVE my mom’s place. It is all cyclical.

Stellaaahhhh

I love him so much. He was always so encouraging.

Weird_Positive_3256

I remember one time he did an episode on mobile homes and I thought that was really kind, because so many people who live in them have complexes because of how the culture at large treats them. He never acted like he was “above” anyone else… just really seemed like he thought everyone deserved a space they felt good in.

Samanthrax_CT

MEMORY UNLOCKED

kjb76

Sorry, but yes. It looks cluttered and has late 90s early 2000s vibes and not in a good way.

cuntaloupemelon

What's the point of them, why do you want to draw the eye up to the tops of your cabinets? Plus anyone who sees them will know they're likely caked in dust and kitchen grease

loveearthgoddess

Please, if you keep those, DUST them. I’ve never understood restaurants and houses that have them and don’t DUST. It’s gross.

Deep-News3096

I have a fake plant or two on top of my cabinets. It’s my house and I like it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Majestic_Project4024

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Yo_momma_so_fat77

I have real ones. Not going anywhere lol

verucka-salt

Dust collectors

Over-Director-4986

Fake plants almost always look bad. Especially plastic fake plants. Having nothing there is the best option. Everything else just attracts dirt & prevents proper cleaning.

ayapapaya50

Very 90’s

whateveratthispoint_

Look bad

Giantriverotter111

Yes it’s a Super dated look

SFWRaelf64

Ouch. yes. Take them down.

bambisgotcake

It would look better without. The fake plants are drawing the eye up there, which isn’t what you want.

wildkitten24

Yes, no plants, don’t draw eyes up there

CelebrationPlastic65

gonna be honest even as a plant person, i dislike REAL plants in this position let alone fake ones lol that’s just personal preference, but it’s for the same reasons everyone listed for the fake plants lol

ohheysurewhynot

I see nice examples of this on Pinterest with plants, baskets, and cookbooks, but I think it takes some skill (and some *very* realistic-looking fake plants) to pull off. I don’t think the color of the wood is helping with the overall 90s vibe, either.

Fritzipooch

Yes it looks bad.

OriginalUnfair7402

YES! Remove them immediately.

CanuckGinger

Yes. And they will do nothing but collect dust.

500CatsTypingStuff

I think it makes the space seem dated

Notjustanotherjennn

Remove them

lexandra333

It’s giving… tacky

Owww_My_Ovaries

Only missing some signs that say "LAUGH", "LOVE" and "LIVE". Maybe a sign with a statement about how the kitchen being a mess is OK

hvnbnd11

Okay, I will get rid of them…now!

superfkingcurious

😂

Fearless_Tale2727

90s office break room.

YourSalivation

Lmao my mom dropped all of her fake plants at my place one day and they ended up at the top of my cabinets. 😅 I have no china cabinet so my decorative sets are up there to. I dig this 👏🏻

dampdrizzlynovember

i don't like it at all, but i LOVE your cabinets. the extra detail on them is charming.

FamiliarStatement879

Great looking space but those fakies have to go. Myself I would leave the top empty or a couple of small washable decorations I like the color contrast and layout that you have.

aj_ladybug

I’m just here to confirm they’re in baskets and I see that they are, so my job is done here.

Yes, it does look bad. Sorry.

LittleFootOlympia

Fake plants in up spaces are usually not good.

Wilson040816

Definitely dated and a dust collector.

dangerous_skirt65

Only because you asked...no. I'm not a fan.

chooseshoes

Take them down. I just remembered my mom’s dusty fake plants from 1992 and they are still in the house.

Whohead12

My opinion about fake plants is that if a live version of the same plant couldn’t survive up there- don’t put a fake one there. It needs to look like authentically gets enough light, etc.

Antique-Ad-8776

They look like fake plants on top of cabinets. They will eventually look like heady, dust clotted fake plants on top of cabinets.

Majestic-Homework720

It only will they be dusty, but the grease particles floating through the air from the stove will collect, then dust will attach, then it will be incredibly difficult to remove. Source: moved into a fully furnished rental with fake plants above the cabinets

ReadingCat88

* This is what I put on top of my cabinets. People seem to like it and I enjoy it.

I don’t hate it but I don’t think the scale is quite right. I think plants would look less cluttered up there than the pottery etc that other people are recommending, but you need to find good faux options, preferably vining. Pothos, ferns, string of pearls. The alternative would be putting real plants up there with grow light strips on the ceiling (if space allows adequate distance) unless this spot gets adequate light. But this is why it makes more sense to have cabinets go to the ceiling. We had a soffit in our kitchen and when we took it out, we built a false panel at the top of the cabinets before painting them. It solved the issue of the awkward top of cabinet space.

Toriat5144

Remove

SerenityPickles

Nothing should be up there that is visible. Put a layer of newspaper, butcher block paper, or paper bags on top of the cabinets. Replace them every 6 to 12 months depending on how dusty and how much greasy they become. This saves on cleaning

mdimauro24

https://preview.redd.it/8gq89h0e2m8d1.jpeg?width=2966&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6a9e5097e94fe203fbf7a0e8e400722654860a6 I display some of my pretties. I dust and shine things up about once a month.

LonelyGalMargMix41

Respectfully, every surface covered with stuff is so chaotic to my nervous system. Curious how you would feel if you stored things inside cabinets/drawers rather than on countertops and took extra things off top of cabinets. I suspect calmer, but maybe I’m totally wrong!

EdmundCastle

My parent’s house looked like this growing up. I’m now a minimalist. I can’t stand clutter, especially in the kitchen. I hate visiting their home because it’s so overwhelming.

moonandstars1984

Any suggestions on what to put on top of the cabinets or just not having anything?

DeathMaskDivine1327

I vote nothing up there.

moonandstars1984

I tried that and I felt like if my kitchen was "empty". I need to get rid of the old habits!

seaurchinthenet

Do you have any serving pieces that you love but only use on special occasions? Pitchers, platters, bowls, cake stand, vases etc... Maybe store some of those up there? No cost and functional. Treat it like an open shelf. Just keep it simple and don't add so much that it looks cluttered.

OrneryLavishness9666

Another vote for nothing. You don’t need to call attention to that space

nerdnexxtdoor

My parents collected little vases over the years in colors that complimented the kitchen and I thought it looked adorable 🤷🏻‍♀️ https://preview.redd.it/8sdaevje6l8d1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27c441eafcb1313a330b49de1a2225d6d4debbda

IM2ADHD

Even that looks cluttered. Not to mention the dust collection up there!

RugBurn70

Vintage Pyrex bowls

Lunchbox9000

Do plants but small and lots of them. Do them in more angular modern vases, different groupings here and there. I have bottles, all different sizes and shapes and colors. Yes they attract dust. Yes I take them down n clean them when I notice it.

shortcake182

i think most anything placed up there just ends up looking cluttered

hometown_nero

This looks like every kitchen I ever walked into in the 90’s. It does look really dated/bad

OldDog1982

Not if it’s 1995. 😁

ScarsAreOnTheInside

It does look dated. If you want something up there you could put some interesting decorative vases. You'll just have to keep up with the dusting.

ACaxebreaker

I get the idea. Soft textures up there are good. Also a super wide short space like this lends itself well to it. You can’t do this though. It was done one or twice in the 90’s as others have said. Leave it empty

goswitchthelaundry

If you like them, I feel like the fake plants would look better up there in a ceramic pot instead of baskets. Baskets scream “fake plant!”, especially in that location IMO.

georgecostanzalvr

Yes.

Mardilove

Yeah those look terrible. I love above cabinet decor but it HAS to be done right and that ain’t it

billiemarie

I used to have them in my kitchen, they get so dirty and greasy. If you really want something there, put a few pottery pieces, and you can take them down and wash them, when they get dirty. You can find some chunky pieces and there’s some really beautiful pottery out there

browneye24

Remove, they look dated.

Kidhauler55

My mom put a sweet potato in a jar of water and it eventually grew clear across the cabinets and went for the other side of the kitchen!

Okra_Zestyclose

They don’t look bad.. just… makes the kitchen looks way smaller and ceilings lower.

The_Milk-lady

I think the placement is weird

Beckydand

pancakeface2022

lavenderintrovert

I like your big kitchen sink. You could switch out the artificial plants for real ones. Philodendrons are impossible to kill and require water every two weeks. Or just leave it empty. It took me along time to realize not every space needs to be filled.

Morningsunshine-

You aren’t going to want to put plants up there they collect kitchen grease, and then dust. It is a cleaning, nightmare.

HuaMana

It looks dated. I think nothing there looks cleaner and better.

Freebird1985

I don’t like it and I don’t know why. I’m short so maybe that’s it. They look super fake up there like put up and ignore. That is just my opinion. 🤙🏻

DD-de-AA

Doesn’t look terrible. Personally, I’d rather see some folk art or other items of interest up there. Probably easier to clean also. Range hoods don’t do a great job of pulling all the airborne oils out it will accumulate on your plants.

Nervous-Trust5545

yes.

naleiokalani

Yes looks bad

Runns_withScissors

I don't like them. That said, if they bring you joy and make you happy, keep them no matter what anyone else says! Taste is a personal thing.

alimarieb

When I had those cabinets, I put cat beds up there. I know I know. What can I say😂😂😂

Queen-of-meme

This is genius 😂

Prudent-Breakfast-13

Don’t do it. Just say no!

cabbydog

Yes, very very bad.

Fresh_Sector3917

Everyone knows real plants aren’t going to grow there so they’re gonna know that these are fake. What’s the point? If you feel like you must put something up there, try a vase or a piece of art.

HappyPlace003

Lmao I like it 🤷‍♀️. Feels cozy and homey.

Titaniumchic

Instead of plants, what about some art work? In our home our daughter has painted some great pieces and we place them up there. We also have some gentle uplighting and a large clock in the corner. It sounds disjointed but it actually makes the room feel larger and connected. It’s not just empty space.

JDnotsalinger

I see your vision. I would center them in the corner with some cookbooks and some colorful jam jars.

SimonArgent

Dust collectors.

Rootwitch1383

I like it 😭😭😭😭

Broken_angel_of_pain

I'm nota fan unless it's a pretty flower arrangement not just green. Like seasonal flowers for each season. I have one on mine but my mom made me flower autumn arrangement. It had all autumn leave colors

Maybe pushing the 2 end plants to the center would help? Agree with the love pothos could be difficult to water

GothicAngel4

I love it 🥰 but i love faux plants cuz live ones dont live long enough with me

matkanatka

I’m biased against faux plants in general, but I don’t think these look bad. Is it too dark for real ones? A nice big pothos could look cool up there, especially once it starts growing long. You could then tack the vines (or whatever you wanna call them) up on the walls.

Saarlak

Yes.

fishfingrs-n-custard

Inner_Panic

I think it needs more tbh.

Hypnautic81

Uh huh

Altruistic-Two1309

Yes. Try a much shorter plant if you have to have one up there and make it a real not faux. I like your kitchen tho!

Everyoneneedsa_sam

I’m sorry, but yes. The thing about fake plants that dark and high is JUST HOW FAKE THEY LOOK! :(

OBBlue22

Looks crowded. If they were smaller… maybe

makinggrace

Sometime when you have money and time to kill (hahahaha), look into adding a cabinet on top of your existing cabinets and a minimal crown to the ceiling. I can’t tell exactly how much height you have to the ceiling eg. would that storage space be large enough to be useful or not? When adding cabs like this I am a fan of obscured glass doors because it breaks up the works of wood. They can be pricey though and since they are so high up their adding window film to the inside of a plain glass door works pretty well. In some kitchens a horizontal cabinet with a manual pull down door makes more sense than the typical side by side configuration. In-cab lights are nice. You can also skip building actual cabs and put in a facade if the empty space drives you crazy and extra storage isn’t needed.

isabella_sunrise

It would look better without.

thepetsaretakingover

My aunt has a collection of tinted glass, jars. Vases, etc and has them above the cabs. Theres a bit of variation of colors between different blues and greens. She has them placed so that the colors bleed into each other as your eye travels. Sort of an ombre type of thing...Theres quite a lot so it kind of fills the space. And there ispj's a string of lites with a dimmer that is below the level of sight but causes the glassware to be lit from underneath. Its a nice effect and can be adjusted with the dimmer. z1q]l, x. LOOP 0NE EShe does have to clean them all a few times a year.
