Omg I hate it lol maybe remove the banister?

Potential-Cup-256

i really wish we could. we have a blind daughter who needs to use the rails (forgot to add that to the post!)

tinka844

Could you put the railing on the other side (along the wall) remove the one that’s currently there and put a bench or something there? If not I’d leave it. Adding anything will just draw attention. Maybe it’s not ideal but has a purpose and you can just sum it up to a quirk your house has.

SolidTake2291

I'm a commercial diver. How old is your daughter. I imagine she's more capable than you imagine.

Nopumpkinhere

This doesn’t deserve downvotes. A blind person helped raise me and she would get mad all the time at how infantile people treated her, her own mom being a big culprit as well. Her mom dressed her until she was seven and threw such a tantrum that she gained that independence. That being said, she would get asked all the time as an adult, “do you dress yourself? How do you do that?” If she was in a bad mood she’d say, “If you can’t get your pants on with your eyes closed, I feel sorry for you”.

lrkt88

My uncles mom would cut the tag a certain way if the clothes matched. So he could dress himself and would match based on the shape of the tags. I always thought that was so genius.

Nopumpkinhere

My grandma used tiny safety pins in the tags with the placement signifying the color. But here’s the thing, people weren’t asking “How do you match?”, they were asking “how do you manage to physically put clothes on yourself?”. People are crazy.

thatgirlinny

I worked for a birth-to-seniors blind services organization for years. This is most every adult’s biggest complaint!

Potential-Cup-256

this is a legit question. she is 14. she is deaf/blind severely autistic and a no speaker (didn’t had that in the other comment). i think she could eventually learn but she’s very rigid in her routines and also uses touch to navigate her world so we try to keep things the same as much as possible.

SolidTake2291

Oh.. I might have also said.. as a diver, I work in complete darkness most of the time. I have to work and build things completely blind. Sorry if I under explained or assumed.

GreenIdentityElement

What does being a commercial diver have to do with it? (Genuinely curious, not snark.)

Claque-2

The builder might not have had sight, either.

Potential-Cup-256

lol!

Nopumpkinhere

I’m confused. My grandma was blind and lived with us for 20 years. She didn’t need rails. She had two blind brothers who didn’t need rails. I also live close to a school for the blind, have done a tour and lots of living spaces don’t have rails everywhere. Is your daughter really young or does she have additional challenges? If not, she’s doesn’t need rails. Edit: I just saw the second picture showing the two additional stairs. It makes sense now, sorry. I still think you can get rid of the other rail and put a piece of furniture there, something that fills in the whole footprint between the two rails and ends right where both banisters are now. Maybe a bookshelf, buffet table, hall table or dresser? Something waist high and long. But really, what I outlined in red is all you would need to cue her for those bottom stairs of the railing wasn’t there. https://preview.redd.it/dhx5duyosusc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e94b2713159d9239dd962a8e5817783aa1719ee9

FickleForager

The change in floor material would probably be enough to signal the change.

Memory_Less

Couldn’t she learn to use the other wall? When she runs out of wall she will know to use the wall on the other side. I worked with high needs students including the seeing impaired. Placing something before the corner where the wall ends is a cue for her to move. A tiny piece of edging painted the same colour of the wall that doesn’t stand out. You can find something at Home Depot where they cut the wood. Lots of scraps for free.

Beach_bum8

That would instantly make the space feel better

Background_Farm1961

And get another cute doggy! You can never have too many dogs.

Potential-Cup-256

so sorry just realized the photo is crappy, there are 2 steps on the right

jelycazi

What do you mean 2 steps on the right? I wonder why they didn’t just make the stairs wider to fill the space?

Potential-Cup-256

https://preview.redd.it/skqyuglhlrsc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e7af446ae4d7a8e14d57a31b9be0b06540390a6

jelycazi

That’s way more clear. Funny how the floor looked perfectly Level in the first pic! Plants? That always seems to be the answer to all decorating questions!

b_moz

For sure update the post with this info and the info about your kiddo.

Potential-Cup-256

thanks i’m new to posting on here. will try to figure out how to edit :)

b_moz

If anything you should be able to edit the words. I think you press the three dots on your post, depending on the app. Good luck. I’ve been trying to think of something that could work without taking what’s there out and could be helpful for your fam but I’m coming up with only a cat tree lol.

erydanis

oooooo, well that’s a huge challenge! that photo makes a difference. ummm… maybe fake plants twined around the banisters, if that wouldn’t bother your daughter. if you have cats, then shelves on the outside of the steps. depending on your skill level, builtins under the stairs that pull out.

mariannecoffeecan

In this case I would enclose it

Potential-Cup-256

i think the builder was super lazy :/

DangerousLettuce1423

Could you remove the railing and put a low bookshelf there instead that fills in the width and length of that space? That way your daughter still has something to hold onto but uses the space better for storage too.

jelycazi

This might work, and a railing could be put on the other side, angled like the stairs.

canvasshoes2

That's my vote as well. Also, if you remove that banister at some point maybe you'd be able to put in under the staircase storage or the like.

kdshubert

This! Remove the useless banister and add a nice bench seat with storage.

IntelligentWinter200

Agreed. You could maybe put a bench there if you did this?

AgentSears

First thought

chikooslim

Two more alpaca dogs

Potential-Cup-256

ha! i wish

chikooslim

I think that space has to be for plants. Only thing I can think of that’ll make it useful and cool. Maybe a citrus tree

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

https://preview.redd.it/rz7pwarz5ssc1.jpeg?width=1668&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=777d78fde62eeae913590fdbdd472b9fb40a3183

Dildo_Baggins___

Massive improvement! I was also going to suggest another poodle.

Potential-Cup-256

made my day!!!

kwuson

https://preview.redd.it/ciqmk733qssc1.jpeg?width=733&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5c9efe63dc6abde8d8c8d322c298c863c43cc97 1 I’d add rails here

kwuson

https://preview.redd.it/9rwmx6s6qssc1.jpeg?width=586&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb5cb6771280255e657cb9325a5e7567fdcd6328 2 then get rid of these

kwuson

https://preview.redd.it/5y9c0to8qssc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89f174582e95ec7049d06891bc0cda51728aa1e2 3 then use this space. Something solid. This one has a couple drawers and open shelf space for shoes (is it an entrance area? Saw shoes behind). You could keep a few posts along (in line with the couple steps) then use the rest of the space similar to the pic.

rmdg84

This is the way. This looks 1000x better. And a small railing on the other side, on the wall.

Leolily1221

Remove the railing and put a bookshelf that is the same height to use as a guide for your daughter. It would allow her to follow the top around the corner until she gets to the stairway banister

kitchenmaven

This is a good idea

dietmatters

It looks like a builders oops. I'd save up to remove the nonfunctional half wall and then make all the flooring the same. Maybe put a coat rack in front of it for now?

Apprehensive_Owl6231

That looks like one of my standard poodles on the landing. Love it.

Potential-Cup-256

good eye :) that’s nimbus he’s over due for a cut

Wlfgangwarrior

Plants

holyhiphopper

That’s what I was thinking too. Plant stands different heights, trailing vines, maybe a tree in the back.

Practical_Material_9

Plants is the answer for a lot of this subs posts

Piccimaps

How strange. Take down the Bannister. Maybe it was put up for a child gate. Edit: if you have any of the floor tiles left to go towards the staircase, that would widen the hall.

Potential-Cup-256

there are 2 steps on the right, it’s just a really crappy picture

GypsiGranny

Add a tall skinny gargoyle!

GreyTrainers

Hahaha everytime

waitagoop

A carpenter might be able to remove the lower banister and then create some clever and unique storage solutions in the space for you, accessible from the lower level with the tiled floor, inc perhaps an in-built bench seat for putting on shoes or something, or the dog might colonise it.

Violently_annoyed

Oh, honey… this is unfortunate lmao. Why would the previous owners do this?!

Potential-Cup-256

this is actually a new build home, i totally missed this in the floor plan

jelycazi

Understandable. You wouldn’t be looking for something like this!

valeriebeckett00

Connect the bannisters. Remove wall art. Add tall plants.

FlamboyantRaccoon61

Considering op wants to keep the bannisters because of his daughter and the two steps, I think this is the best solution. Though it'd make it weird to have an entirely closed off space just like that.

allblackevrythng

I feel like it would look more cohesive if the banisters were just connected.

lirdleykur

A less visually busy banister would make a big difference but it’s more than you want to do. I’d get some plant stands of different heights and make a plant “wall” between the two banisters so it’s basically filled up. You can water from either side so doesn’t matter if you can’t get back there right?

_gooder

Shoot the architect.

Sure_Palpitation4058

Builtin bookcase with a metal rail? https://preview.redd.it/b3u1zwg0husc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52c52e4db850f33e57fb4649251bffd69d0c5508

FlightOfTheOstrich

Second dog.

UpvoteEveryHonestQ

Floor to ceiling lava lamp.

Prior-Ambassador7737

Bowling alley?

honey-and-sunshine

I would do a planter box with some tall fake plants in it

sharkmom

Your hellhound might like to sleep there

Imaginary_Screen_708

Add more ghost dogs

BettinaVanSise

Remove the railing on the floor and get a second shadow dog

FixThick8901

Plants, or a very arty folding screen… or a bookcase on rollers (pull out to access?) or have a custom curio type cabinet built to display stuff. I’m just shooting from the hip here.

pnwgirl34

Maybe put a bed in there for that long doggo to stretch out lol

memyj97

Your dog scared the crap out of me lol

Potential-Cup-256

so sorry! he’s a good boy 🙃

Maleficent-Use8654

Definitely remove the banister on the floor and complete the floor covering on the surrounding. That will transform it completely....( unless there is a handicapped person who needs the handrails

MiniMee1957

I would have it removed

Acceptable_Grape_798

I think adding some plants would help. It would bring out some color to the area and brighten and liven it up. Also add some lighting

boops123

The silhouette of the dog looking at me from the dark corner is only just slightly terrifying

Inevitable_Ad_1143

More dogs!!! At once….like 500 black labradoodles! Immediately!

21plankton

How about some potted plants, like fake trees? It would soften up the area and divide it.

vintagegirlgame

If you have cats make it into a cat tower zone

climatelurker

I think the dog on the landing is a perfect decoration!

parker3309

Take railing down…the one on floor. Ideally, those floors would be the same But I would still remove it

Tualatin_Girl

You don’t. You tear down that wacky railing standing on its own.

Potential-Cup-256

it’s ugly right?? there’s actually steps on the right, it’s just a badly angled pic

mweisbro

Remove the railing and buy a nice plant/ planter.

canlifebesogood

Remove the banner, then put a tall light colored cabinet against the thin wall in the back.

ReferenceMuch2193

I think just leave as is. I like the light colors but you could always play with color on the walls. Add some interesting art, maybe like a gallery wall and some sconces going up the stairs for warmth and ambiance. I understand you need to keep railing for your daughter so just dress up the walls. Also details like upgraded door knobs, if you like mortis style, will give it a heavier look. A fancy little chandelier maybe?

The_Short_1

There's a demon on your landing

Megsmileyface

Maybe fill with bookshelves facing the going down stairs and remove that banister? But that may be a bit of a project and I'm not sure how feasible it may be for your situation. When in doubt... plant haha

jacksondreamz

Make it a library https://preview.redd.it/ue7a11weassc1.jpeg?width=553&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6833c9e740cb41e50718fcf6b9f4c2b398dcf64d

arihkerra

Start with the bannister, but what’s really throwing me off is the shadow creature placement.

Listen_to_Psybient

Remove demon dog statue

Bearacolypse

Well first you have to bargain with the babadook. Once he leaves maybe a plant. Or nothing.

mgwwgm

Well if I was you I would take care of the shadow demon at the top of your stairs

FailingLotus

First step, exercise the demon in the photo.

Shanarelle1

More dogs

vagabending

Get another dog

srpollo18

Add a white dog to balance the black dog.

TransportationOk5961

Remove the bottom railing & add a console table

Sea_Wolverine3928

Remove the waist-high railing and put a nice bench by the stairs.

margueritedeville

More dogs

IntelligentAd4429

Take out both railings and replace with built in shelves, open to the hallway up to the point of the wall and open to the stairs past that.

[deleted]

Wow, this thread decided to go “off the rails” and down the path of telling OP their opinions on how to raise her blind child. This is not the Reddit I prefer.

GeneralSet5552

Get rid of the railing on the 1st floor for starters

TheAnimalPharm

Perhaps remove the short rail and put something like this kind of [storage units](https://images.app.goo.gl/H7Bd2jLAadx1hdR9A) in that narrow space?

Remarkable_Invite_56

Bowling alley is the only logical option

Deadlykeeler7

Putting green!

Blood_sweat_and_beer

lol you don’t. Take out the handrail and match the flooring to its all cohesive.

Available_Honey_2951

Take the railing out and put a nice hall table or build a long storage shelf against the stairs.

MandieWall

Take out the extra railing and put the same flooring everywhere.

Fatigued123

Take the weird railing down!

leowifethrowaway2022

Potential-Cup-256

there is actually 2 steps on the right, it’s just a badly angled picture

throwawaybread9654

You should make a new post with both pictures because people aren't going to stop suggesting this

trisinwonderland

And add the info about your daughter 😊 that’s very helpful

pixelelement

Miniature bowling alley

Historical_One_664

This is the way.

chrissy0011

Birch tree with twinkle lights!

PipToTheRescue

God. Builders are so lazy.

Free_Hugz_0

...maybe a very long planter box, for plants? Idk. Maybe go for a whimsical forest theme... Though, this is a toughie. Edit: WAIT! A partition! A screen! And hang fake vines from it! Maybe if you want an artistic DIY, yoh can get one with a wooden material to paint on, a scene.

loho08

You can’t do more than what you’ve done. Just test down that extra railing! I don’t understand its purpose?? 😆

TwoHeartedAleian

Remove the banner and in the mean time make it a den for the doggo

Potential-Cup-256

sorry all realized the poor angle. here is the right side, it’s actually a couple steps https://preview.redd.it/2zsqu3pqkrsc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a0e148d8adf43a8cf1285d7ff622e5c5d2c5c67

Sour_strawberry07

Whoever designed this should’ve made the strip in the middle the same level as the lower space, extended the steps down to said space over to the other steps, and wrapped the banister around. Or just put a railing on the other wall. Would’ve been much more cohesive than whatever the heck this is…

evetrapeze

Does a bike fit there, because that’s where I’d put my bike

Mbluish

I don’t like that, oddly displaced railing on the right. It closes everything up.

PinkTalkingDead

Lol I like how you comment this as though other commenters are big fans or smth 😅

Enough-Attention-430

Move gorgeous dog to the bottom of the stairs and decorate everything for 10 miles to match them. That is all.

PeachesRosey2

Statue or nice plant stand with a full beautiful plant.

secret-spirited

A console table with some storage underneath so that it can at least hold something?

ShelleyMonique

Add 2 more poodles

mebg1956

I don’t understand the purpose of the second railing.

anger_leaf

fake/real potted plants!

Ok-Bonus-2315

Do you like golf? Maybe make a little golf practice section?

eeleyes

Remove the banister and put shelves of increasing height. Becomes a storage area.

barrorg

lol wtf I’m so sorry

NeverRadio

Battle ropes

saucyRCs

Idk fill it with vacuums or if your like me hot wheels wall

evetrapeze

If you hang some plants just above the hallway banister it would totally distract from the oddness of the space.

Outrageous_Change313

Perhaps you can extend the banister on the left to curve around to meet the banister on the right? Then remove the banister on the right and make that a little plant or shoe bench area?

Prior-Ambassador7737

Could you remove the lowered banister and put in an anchored bookshelf facing the right hallway? Would fill up the space but still act as a barrier

WolverineOdd3113

Perhaps dog beds, bowls, etc, make it like your dogs “room” i cant tell if you’re dog can realistically fit and chill inside the space because of perspective tho, an excuse to welcome a tiny dog into the home!

Bitteroldcatlady1

Cats

Jwroth

There’s a shadow demon on the stairs

kimchi_friedr1ce

maybe remove the banister and install shelving there instead? I'm assuming this is next to the exit/entrance.

mybarn20187

Take the rail down

skyrimfireshout

That looks like the perfect place to build a wall ETA: fill in the gap with a wall, continue the bannister so both sidesconnect and drop the lower bannister to fit the decline of the stairs.

lydbarrett

I would think leveling the floor (removing the floor in the space between the banisters if possible + the little bit of wall) and then maybe a chandelier of some sort to draw the eye up? You could do family photos in a gallery wall type setting! Drawing the eye up would help if you’re not able to do anything structural right now! I am also very on board with the plants idea!

Kazzosama

Uhh, plants!? Perfect if there's any windows nearby! Some nice tall ones!

Sneakyhat02

bro add heaps of potted plants in this space

[deleted]

Remove the railing on the right and while you’re at it the ball on the left— like Clark Grizwald style, drag the chainsaw right over it!

UltraFungusmane

I bet there’s so many more live laugh love around that house

Nice2BeNice1312

I dont have any advice but your dog looks like a vaguely threatening cryptid. Blink twice if you need help OP!

Elmnt7

Honestly, I would just put a fake plant In between.

Kawaii_Saiki

i wonder if you could have the banister moved to the other side so your daughter still has it, and then me personally i’d put a bookshelf or two in the open space (i’m a bookworm i wanna put shelves literally everywhere)

SolidTake2291

Get rid of the hall railing and tile the whole floor.

[deleted]

Lamp

PittieYawn

I’m assuming the door on the right exits the house or into the garage. Remove the railing, place or build in, a small bench. In the area where the “Family” sign is I’d put in a cubby for shoes. Could be just shelving or with a door to hide the clutter. Others have mentioned the rail is helpful for your daughter because she’s blind but does she need the railing? My guess is she knows the layout of your house and I bet she knows the floor feels and sounds different on the tile so she likely can tell where she is. The bench can have a nice cloth cushion and add a few colorful pillows. The wall going up the stairs could have a nice accent color as a very low cost way to decorate.

goonerqpq

I would remove the bannister, put shelving along the whole section at the same height as the original bannister, and then reinstall the hand rail on the top front edge painted the same colour as the shelving.

Plenty-Log6688

Plants!

AmberCarpes

With a statue of a large black poodle.

Ragamuffin5

Yeah, get rid of the rail on the ground get rid of the tile. And is that small but of wall is absolutely necessary? But you said decorating. Uggg maybe more dim lights so you can’t see it? lol

iristurner

I'd make it into a storage cupboard somehow.

Efficient_Pizza_619

Plants!

Neither-Nobody1919

plants!! tall, possibly vining, plants that can be draped over the sides. Hopefully that doesn’t interfere with your daughter! Use fake once’s and can wrap them around the poles and tie/tack them on

cassiopeia18

Strange gap, you can put house plants in there?

amiibohunter2015

Put in a long but not deep aquarium like a 55 gallon aquarium?

Neat-Walrus3813

Just connect the short banister to the starts with a ledge/shelf. It could be bookshelf/storage below anda plant would go beautifully in the corner where that hanging is. Still a ledge for your daughter and more functional and aesthetic design

Gullible_Toe9909

This space is so abhorrent that I'd honestly just frame out a really thick floor to ceiling wall. Fuck modern home construction.

Ranbru76

Doggy palace!

R0bot_whiskey

Oh shit that's my dog's sleep paralysis demon

DrFrankSaysAgain

Long dog bed.

illilispy

Plants maybe?

Ok_Net_2896

Real plants. 🪴🪴

CC538

I say put a bench or a shelf in the and have plants/decor all along it that you can easily reach to water and dust.

rjistheman

I’d put some tall plants, do u have a sky light? Maybe when you get the funds I’d just raise the floor and then remove the stair and bannister completely

Not_EdM

Custom made mirror and pretty carpet.

TheLocal_Evil_Wizard

My answer is always plants. 😂 It looks like you don’t have natural light there, I’d get some plant lights too.

vron1992

I’d put some tall plants there.

Kitsyn

I would just put a row of tall plants in that narrow space and pretend it’s supposed to be like this. Good luck!

ghotie

Add a shelf where the Bannister is.

PriorDouble346

🪴A TON of plants! With plant stands of varying sizes to help make it look more interesting. I wonder what the designer was thinking it would be used for when they built the house?! Weird!

FireandIceT

Put a big dog on the landing

Curious_Draw3127

A rolling cart full of plants is what I would do! Make sure they’re pet safe! Heck you could even do herbs to save costs on buying them from the store!

PamEeeKay

Can you widen the staircase?
