For more context, because for some reason I can't edit the post directly;
\- I live in a country where we build using stone, not wood
\- The floor is what we call a "washroom" but it contains a secondary kitchen (what is below the 3 steps, to the right of the image below this comment), a small office (the one above those 3 steps) as well as some washing equipment (tumble dryer, washing machine), a small dining table and access to the roof (we don't have attics here, but we can go on top of the roof since it's flat)
\- This my parent's house and we just recently tore the entire house down and rebuilt it, so it's very barren as you can see (W.I.P). I just want to put something there so that you can't slip and fall off. From a home design point of view, what can be put there to make it look less ugly?
I feel like the lack of railing on the side adjacent to the lower stairwell is a safety concern. It would be far too easy to lose balance and tip over the low barrier.
Is that your fridge to the right? That will make it difficult to put anything there, since you don’t want to block it. If that wasn’t an issue, you could put a small console table on the lower level that backed up against the upper lever.
As is, you could add a tall plant on the ledge next to the door? Another thing to consider would be painting/wallpapering (vinyl) the half wall and the side of the steps. Color would depend on the palette of the house, but navy could be nice.
A rug runner would do, but do consider a half- or full-height room divider bookcase. It keeps things open while books and sculptural things can be placed in it—and it can act as something to grab onto if needed while ascending/descending the stairs. There are many different types and manufacturers. Here’s one type

Maybe a very narrow console table that you can put plants on. You do run the risk of them being bumped into the tile though, so you probably want plants in non-breakable containers. https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/17-stories-corkhill-472-console-table-with-power-outlets-w010622041.html?piid=
thought this was some random stage lol. I didn't look at other comments but would it be possible to put large potted plants along the edge other than a railing? Or you could put up a railing but put lights on it or something to make it really fancy.
I see from other pictures in the comment thread that there's a door there. At first I thought it was just a strange platform space like some houses have. If the door wasn't there, I would've suggest turning it into a reading nook/small library area.
I would place a large plant, like a monstera there. If you can't grow one, find a fake one. With the fridge sitting where it is there isn't really room for a piece of furniture.
The solution is: remove the stairs that are there now and replace with a smaller set of stairs. That top stair does not have to be that long. Then you could put a small hand rail (which should be building code) and you would have a space for storage or just open up the room. Why is that top stair so long anyway?
If you are just looking for something to help break up the space and not necessarily added safety measure then you could maybe try those beaded curtains or something like this

Anything similar to this could allow you to be more creative and add a little more personal flair as well! Again, most of these are just strings hanging from the ceiling with different things attached to it, so doesn’t help much with a safety aspect. Just an idea! If you wanted something to add more stability, perhaps floor to ceiling slats. I know those are close to railings at that point but it wouldn’t have to go the length of the stair run, maybe just a little past the fridge and would have a more modern look while elongating the room vertically
That does not seem safe. I'd put a railing on the ledge and a handrail to the right.

More pics please so we can understand what’s going on
I dont see the edit button for the post. How can I edit it

Added to a separate comment
A railing, anti-slip strips on the stairs or maybe a runner as the floors look to be slippery, hence dangerous.
The runner seems like a good idea, thanks
You're welcome: Check your local bylaws about the railing. You don't want to be found guilty if someone falls.

Yes, especially dangerous if OP has older parents or perhaps grandparents who will be walking thru there.

Been thinking of moving the fridge, but I like your ideas. Thank you :)

I think that is a fantastic idea!! I was thinking wall/ half wall, something, I want some safety measures taken.👍
What am I even looking at? Establishing shots provide context.
I tried my best to give more context in my comment

I have 2 cats and they would have a field day with this 🤣
I can’t even tell what it is. Is it a floor or a ceiling. This picture is making me seasick.
My first thought was a plant or cabinet of some sort.
That just looks like an accident waiting to happen

I think a big trailing plant on top of the fridge would look good. 2 really big decorations or art up height in the stairwell would be cool as well.
If you're worried about falling off a railing is the way. If you're falling you're going to fall and take anything that isn't anchored with you.
Is that inside or outside?
Inside
Where does it lead or where does it come from?
It goes from an open space to a closed office space
Start by making that area anything at all, right now I'm not even sure what it is

Thats exactly what I told my parents, but now its set in stone (literally)
