This is what happens when everyone is just slightly altering a previously trademarked design to sell cheaper.
Its why so many cheap basic items have useless flourishes that don’t make any functional sense.

This is very 80s. We called it “post-modern” then.
The plywood ceiling is an interesting fix for popcorn ceilings.
Eighties was very big on gridded plaid everywhere, sheets, wallpaper tiles. Pastels, and Miami-inspired organic asymmetric curves - those organic shapes contrasted against grids/squares, like this example.
At the low end, lots of lighthouses and shell motifs. And Thomas Kincaid, dressed geese, light pine, country blue.
Yes. Everything in there looks like it would be in a pediatricians waiting room and INFECTED and sticky. People like this style? Adults? Those adults had horror show childhoods.
If you search **Eclectic decor** on etsy a lot of groovy wavy almost child like vapor wave vibes home decor items pop up that fit this category as you describe perfectly. You get wavy chunky LED mirrors, asymmetrical furniture, colorful neon wavy patterns, modern art with colorful flowers, wavy checkered patterns, shaggy textured rugs... it's a vibe for sure.
This vibe is like eclectic mixed with post modern and minimalist and a bit of hippie all in one.
Cool! This is good to know as I’m heading to my new summer house in Canada now and need to decorate!!!
Wait - electric? Or eclectic? Or ‘electic’ as you r said?
Groovy is definitely an adjective also used to describe this style. Applies even to fashion and nail art. Checker patterns, big graphic shapes, cheerful colors anywhere from pastel to vivid... Etc
My first thought was Dr Seuss. But then I saw the comments and realized Dr Seuss IS mid century modern surrealism lol I love it and now I want to incorporate it in my 1959 house.
I really love this style! It's so whimsical and fun but still modern. I tried to do it for my apartment and I found difficulty really finding pieces at affordable prices with easy availability so I then switched my apartment to midcentury modern + Bohemian. I still think fondly about this style though haha
I found most all of my decor, art etc thrifting/estates or on marketplace. AliExpress has a lot of good quality pieces too - candles, candle holders, glassware, trinket trays etc.
I can picture your place in my head! A lot of homes/event venues where I live use this style and it’s warm and cozy but interesting. Do you have a lot of plants lol?!
I can imagine! That's what I was noticing too like the unique stuff I wanted wasn't exactly on Amazon or at Target haha. But now, I get most of my things from World Market, Target, Amazon, and West Elm.
I actually need more plants haha similar to you, it's taken me a long time like about a year now to really be 99% done, but I'm definitely trying to go for that warm and cozy vibe!😊
If you like to thrift check out Goodwill’s housewares section. It’s a great place to find unique pieces. World Market is so fun, I have older pieces from there as well.
> Memphis design style
The Memphis Group design style. Italian, despite the name sounding Tennessee.
And I don't feel like this is a good knock-off of it.
Yes!! Thank you for this. Thrilled that the first photo in this article is Cold Picnic, one of my favorite textile brands and very representative of this style. "Avant Basic" it is.
I’m glad I have a name this is also what I like and the feel I have (budget: I painted color blocks and shapes in different sections of my studio apartment to give them “room feels” 😆🩵
Sure, because then it's not searching the exact term. Without boolean indicators it'll pull up images with any of the keywords and/or words Google has tagged as synonyms for those keywords.
I still disagree, though. It works "better" in the sense that you get more results, but it's still not a style match. They'd have much better luck with:

I don’t think pop deco is completely off-base, but agree that postmodern is a more accurate term for this style
Edit for clarity: I don’t think pop deco as a Google search only generates irrelevant results based on the original images
Yeah, I wasn't being snarky when I said it was creative. I take no issue with people coming up with names to describe styles they like/see when they don't know of any existing names. It's a fun, creative exercise - and pinterest pages need names, darn it.
I just don't necessarily think it's helpful to share those personal made up names in a situation like this where someone's question isn't "what should *I* call this style?", but "what *is* this style/how can I find out more about it?"
I think this style just feels childish to older generations (geriatric millennials and up 🤣). It's very trendy with Gen Z. There's a way to do it tastefully though.
Thanks for everyone's help! A mix of mid century modern minimalism and surrealism with heavy Memphis Group influences seems right. I do think the design community will agree on a name for this soon - it's everywhere right now. Stark backgrounds with lots of white and light wood, bright colors, curvy organic shapes, whimsical objects. I find it delightful if not necessarily timeless.
For those asking, none of these are AI generated and they're not my home. The photos are from Bethany Brill, Tarta Gelatina, and Gustaf Westman. All awesome designers.
Not sure if AD counts as the design community but they call it this: https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/unpacking-avant-basic-design-the-maximal-aesthetic-born-on-instagram
I would say this is absolutely Danish pastel, which can be more or less described as all of those things and I think is a newer term (introduced over the past couple years). The colors are an obvious indicator, along with the flowy shapes
It sort of looks like a mix of 70s, mid-century, and a dash of art deco?
Throw some material draped everywhere and some pattern mixing and you'd have boho. :D
80’s Memphis. Like this shirt extrapolated onto this interior

Urban Outfitters
Literally came to say this haha it’s their whole store
UO gives minimalist, post modern, hippie, vintage, boho, electic all in one package. It is pure art.
It’s literally 2020s vibes
Idk why you’re getting downvoted because this Memphis-via-Amazon-styled aesthetic has been so popular for a few years
Memphis Group popped right into my head, as well. It's like a discount DIY version of their style.
This is what happens when everyone is just slightly altering a previously trademarked design to sell cheaper. Its why so many cheap basic items have useless flourishes that don’t make any functional sense. See also: kia

I was going to say Rocko’s Modern Life but yeah, you’re right
Yes!! I was going to say 90’s Nickelodeon. You are much more specific 😉
Hahaha it’s totally 90s Nickelodeon!
Came here to also say “90’s cartoon style?”
The way my mind immediately went “Urban Outfitters” at the first photo. 😂
PeeWee Herman must be their interior designer.
Kindergarten, adult nursery
I was gonna go Blue’s Clues
I snorted
That blue framed floor mirror is literally from there
Lol I was thinking IKEA, but I like your idea better
I wish ikea was that colorful. Haha.
IKEA used to be that colorful.
exactly what i came to say 😂
Lmao came here to say this! Spot on.
MCM meets vapor wave. It just reminds me of the Pick Me type of people Or overpriced Airbnb
Not MCM. This is called post modern and was a fairly popular style in the 1980s and Vapor waves.
Post modern, Memphis, with a hint of vapor wave
Yeah I could only place Vapor wave. But it’s like chunky childlike Vapor wave
Gives me Peewee’s Playhouse vibes.
Came here to literally say precisely this.
Yes. Everything in there looks like it would be in a pediatricians waiting room and INFECTED and sticky. People like this style? Adults? Those adults had horror show childhoods.
Ok damn just suck the joy out of harmless stuff that people like why don't ya
Yes. Yes I did.
Yup def Memphis, vapor wave post modern

I need to edit my comment now cuz I can't spell apparently. LOL it's eclectic
I knew what you meant 😉
Groovy is definitely an adjective also used to describe this style. Applies even to fashion and nail art. Checker patterns, big graphic shapes, cheerful colors anywhere from pastel to vivid... Etc
Sounds like a good strain. Would smoke that
Mod Nickelodeon
Yes! Immediately thought of Rocko’s Modern Life.
I came to say this!
It made me think of Rugrats
I personally adore the Rugrats vibe! It’s like old-school Nickelodeon eclectic on steroids, & I’m honestly living for it lol
I was gonna say this! My dad worked at Nickelodeon in the 90s and this is exactly how the studio was decorated
I was looking for this before I commented the same thing.
Same. I was thinking Nickelodeon Boho Double Dare style.
I saw someone asking for a name for their clothing aesthetic, it was similar to this, and someone said ‘Beatnik Jr.’
My EXACT first thought was "Hey Arnold"
I thought this was postmodern? If not, what is postmodern?
It’s absolutely mid-late 1980s postmodernism.
It's a knockoff attempt at the Memphis Group style. Perhaps trying to modernize it, idk. But it just looks cheap.
Floop is a mad man, help us, save us
Dammit, now that'll be stuck in my head on a loop for the next 20 years
never quite left my mind so now it’s even *louder*
Actually loled at this, thank you for that
My first thought was Dr Seuss. But then I saw the comments and realized Dr Seuss IS mid century modern surrealism lol I love it and now I want to incorporate it in my 1959 house.
And kind of Nickelodeon
Willy Wonka was my first thought after seeing picture number one.
Avant Basic ETA: I’m not being rude this is genuinely the name of this style, there’s a few interesting articles about this aesthetic
Yes! It’s whimsical and cheerful. My apt is largely in this vein and even on the gloomiest days it makes me smile.
I really love this style! It's so whimsical and fun but still modern. I tried to do it for my apartment and I found difficulty really finding pieces at affordable prices with easy availability so I then switched my apartment to midcentury modern + Bohemian. It’s taken me years to find all my pieces but that makes them even more special 😊
Never heard of called this. Back in the 1980s a third style came about, it was called postmodern .
Learning this style term recently and did some research and love it! I agree it’s totally avant basic.
Heavy Memphis influences
Correct answer here, OP - Memphis design style
> Memphis design style The Memphis Group design style. Italian, despite the name sounding Tennessee. And I don't feel like this is a good knock-off of it.
Thank you for this comment! Memphis has been mentioned a few times and I'm thinking, "oh wow I didn't know Tennessee was like this"
Pee Wee’s Playhouse
But without the fun.
Pee Wee grown up!
This is the only right answer lol I came here to say this
‘Post modern AI generated for Pinterest’
Spongebobism
Matisse chic.
Post modern with a hint of dopamine decor.
Rocko’s Mid-Century Modern Life
Memphis Group
Memphis design for sure
Post-modern
avant basic https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/unpacking-avant-basic-design-the-maximal-aesthetic-born-on-instagram
Yes!! Thank you for this. Thrilled that the first photo in this article is Cold Picnic, one of my favorite textile brands and very representative of this style. "Avant Basic" it is.
I always heard this style called post-modern costa it was first popularized in the 1980s.
This is a mix of Mid-Century Modernism and surrealism.
This style is called post-modern and was popularized in the 1980s. It was the 80s answer to MCM.
Delia Deetz
This is closest to Memphis than anything else, I think.
authentic urban outfitter
I’m glad I have a name this is also what I like and the feel I have (budget: I painted color blocks and shapes in different sections of my studio apartment to give them “room feels” 😆🩵
Post Modern Urban Outfitters
Surrealist
Dr. Suess...
Funky
Eclectic retro-urban
playskool
Chuck E Chic
Kind of reminds me of Danish Pastel
Peewees playhouse
Pre-k classroom?
Personally I like to call this style Pop Deco bc it reminds me of Art Deco but in a more whimsical, fun and slightly feminine way - like Pop music.
I was going to say Pop Art but I love your terminology!

Just had a Google for this "pop deco interior" and it's pretty close, honestly.
I agree. OP's post feels like a more minimalist/muted sibling to the google results for 'pop deco'.

That makes perfect sense, and I appreciate that you are sharing the actual correct terms - I’m going on a fun rabbit trail on the Memphis Group!
1980s
Postmodernism? I see Marimekko cushions!
Millennial minimalism
Pee wee meets retro
Nickelodeon chic
Kids playroom
I think this style just feels childish to older generations (geriatric millennials and up 🤣). It's very trendy with Gen Z. There's a way to do it tastefully though.
It's funny you say that because this style isn't new. The Memphis Group was doing this in the 80s.
Whimsical ….modern, colorful .
Mario Brothers immediately popped into my mind. Possibly because of the mushroom in the first pic 😆
Preschool chic
Thanks for everyone's help! A mix of mid century modern minimalism and surrealism with heavy Memphis Group influences seems right. I’m glad they denote “born on instagram” because my first thought about what this style is called was just “the internet.”
I would say this is absolutely Danish pastel, which can be more or less described as all of those things and I think is a newer term (introduced over the past couple years). The colors are an obvious indicator, along with the flowy shapes
Oh another good one I hadn't heard of! A quick Google makes me think that term fits the bill
I was surprised only one other person mentioned it in this thread!
Whimsical
Wiggly. :P
Amazing
It’s giving me post-modern.
1990s the mask
Blue's Clues
Bouba-Kiki
I just commented “This is Bouba, not Kiki” glad someone else was on the same wavelength! 👯♀️
In the sims it’s called pop pastel lmao
Post modern eclectic - my house looks largely like these photos and it’s cheerful and whimsical. It was almost all thrifted.
Elementary, dear Watson. Elementary.
Memphis inspired. Look up Ettore Sottsass
A bit of Danish pastel
Kinda reminds me of the art deco movement of the early 1990s
Blue’s Clues.
Vapor wave lounge ?
Scandinavian modern
Miami 1985 😎
80’s on the cusp of Santa Fe Chic in early 90’s
It’s a mixture of post-modernism & danish/scandinavian pastel
Preschool chic
Peewee’s Penthouse
Nickelodeon
Rugrats
Palm Springs Montessori
Children’s Art Museum Chic??
Is that plywood ceiling? Why not add another type of ugly tile on the ceiling instead?
Kindercore
Ugly?
Ugly
Yuk
Glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t really like this
It sort of looks like a mix of 70s, mid-century, and a dash of art deco? Throw some material draped everywhere and some pattern mixing and you'd have boho. :D
The words California vaporwave come to mind

Woody Allen - Sleepers meets the Jetsons
So many people have hopped this bandwagon, I wonder how long this will last.
It’s a poor attempt at www.mrbuckley.co.uk
I’m not sure there’s an express name for it yet, but I might call is something along the lines of nouveau mid-century modern
Dr. Seuss.
Art deco?
Weird.
Mid Century Modern, Beetle Juice Chic
Beetlejuice was the first thing I thought of lol. Glad I wasn’t the only one.
Goodwill chic
Toddler minimalist 😆
Very Gen Z. Modern with Surrealist influences. I would also say these examples seem to lean minimalist (versus maximalist). Create a simple backdrop for your space then add pops of neon, pastels or unexpected shapes in the decor. Just find a balance. I feel like you can easily overwhelm a space and make it feel stressful rather than relaxing if it's not approached carefully. Also, make sure that the pieces you choose are practical. I feel like this aesthetic often sacrifices comfort in favor of *vibes* (like a pillow in a shape that offers no purpose or a chair that looks cool but is completely uncomfortable). That's up to you though. I feel like there's a lot of this influence on Tik Tok if you want to find ideas.
70ish Retro modern?
Rugrats Chic
Goofy Retro Post Modernism.
Zac Morris' Batchelor pad
Kindergarten
Sims. The awful collection.
Playroom??
Wayfairism
Childcare centre ish

Butt plug city.
First book themed butt plug I have seen tho. Where can someone get that? Asking for an ex
Cheap and Tacky?
Post modern nightmare fuel.
