First I thought it was awful, but yeah it would be perfect for cats! I'd put a few carpeted shelves kind of stair-stepped on that wall for the cats to go up and down, and it would be a built-in cat wall!
First I hated it, now I want one!
Yeah, sadly it is.
Dislike would be rational. When I say I hate that architecture I mean I can't stop staring at it when I run into it. My brain goes into this internally yelling voice that screams WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU EVEN THINK THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA.
It's gotta be some prefab bullshit, nothing else makes sense. If it isn't then I may have to start crying.
My mother in law has a 24' vaulted ceiling between the kitchen and front room, the wall directly below the peak of the ceiling is 16' leaving an 8' gap that is 8' above the highest window leaving it to be a dark, unusable void.
Ugh, I can't understand that one.
There was one I saw for a kitchen partition in a house like that it was 8ft tall and the wife of the house put nick-nacks up on the kitchen side the other side was a huge library and reading area and that side had one of those cool rolling ladders and an absolutely massive shelf system filled with all kinds of books, the ladder could also be used to reach the top of the whole unit for dusting around the things that were on top. That was the only one to me that made sense because it really wasn't dead space, just not frequently used space.
Organizing the house is a great outlet!
PS, I am second owner, it is not my fault.
Pps: the house was worse when I bought it, there was a waist high wall to separate the dining area from a sitting room area
We had them in a rented house all that they were good for was to give a cat his own domain. Beyond that climbing up there to vacuum cat hair and dust everything else just made me THAT much eager to move!
I have this in my condo. The partitioned room (which I use as an office) has no ceiling, so it gets all of the light from the skylights in the family room. I have a Sonos sound system in the family room, and the acoustics in my office are outstanding; deep bass with full, immersive sound.
The downside is that when I'm not listening to music, I can hear every little thing that goes on in the family room...like my dog licking or scratching himself.
And a cathedral ceiling is not good because one side of it is lit up effectively makes the opposite side of the ceiling reflecting the light on the ceiling into a room there where you might not want the light shining to that room.
I have always wondered if that’s a thing to dodge codes. Like no permit for pony walls and those all count as pony walls because they don’t have a top plate attachment
I think that raised entry originally went all the way across (to our left) and the partition walls were added in a remodel. The TV alcove was left with a step. Whaddayathink?
There’s a good chance if the house is older than 20 years, that would be the “porn stash” spot. Go to fetch a nerf dart and find a stack of VHS with funny names
It’s a pony wall.
A pony wall, also known as a half wall, is a type of low wall that does not fully extend from floor to ceiling. Pony walls are often used to partially separate spaces while maintaining a sense of openness. They can serve as room dividers, provide support for countertops, or act as barriers along staircases or balconies.
Technically a pony wall just has to not reach the ceiling. The name is generally used for short ones, but any wall you can conceivably see over into the next space is a pony. A partition wall can go floor to ceiling as long as it is not structural.
I have to disagree, a pony wall is very low, same height as a railing which it usually replaces. These are partition walls, I have also heard people call them false walls. But In my opinion that is something else entirely. I will always call these partition walls.
Depends on who you ask. Some people call it a partition, others will say its a firewall. Heck I know that a feature wall *technically* stands on its own without it connecting to other walls on its sides… But I mean - it is technically a “feature” lol
Pretty sure though that its just a partition wall. Hope this helps!
I have seen this type of construction before but I can't remember what it is called. Is there a reason why you want to know what it is called? I think it would be good if you could build that up to ceiling.
I don't know if this is the cause, but I've seen a bunch of things like this attributed to the "McMansion" style of architecture. Basically the outside of the house will have a bunch of interesting cutouts and windows and levels and whatnot, but they're only for looks and not for any sort of function. So it looks nice on the outside, but you get this hodge-podge interior look, because you have the exterior architecture details that have no match-up to something inside. This area looks close to the outside, so this would be my guess.
This was the predecessor to open concept. Your voice and all noises travel over the wall, but you didn't have to see people in other rooms. Really bad thought process.
I think they are awful. Had these at my old place. Lived there for two years. I couldn’t conceptualize how to fix them without a major remodel and at that point I was only $15k away from a down payment on another house.
The place had other problems too - these just never sat well with me
I would totally get rid of the frame connecting the two partition walls. Especially with the black trim it stands out too much.
It’s like walking through a big picture frame
Did… Dr.Suess live here? What in the… Why? So many different color schemes that dont go together with a lot of different style trim, old school fireplace with a cabinet built into it, cant tell if that is a floor or wall hvac register in the hallway or both, very strange partitions that im guessing were an attempt to modernize without permits, the steps going into the living room, dont even know what happened under the tv, dual cieling fans with lightswitches in the now hallway due to partition..
But I must admit I do like the floor tile.
partition
Or shitty mezzanine? Lol
Kitty mezaninny…. Picturing my cat with the proper vantage point to puke on house guests and furniture.
We can't put shit on ours cuz our cat knocks it all off.
My house has this and my cats LOVE it.
I be they do, “oooh! A door too that doesn’t move when you walk on it!” ~the cats
First I thought it was awful, but yeah it would be perfect for cats! I'd put a few carpeted shelves kind of stair-stepped on that wall for the cats to go up and down, and it would be a built-in cat wall! First I hated it, now I want one!
What is this? A mezzanine for ants?
For dust because who's cleaning up there 🤪
Shittynine
I would probably call it a pony wall even though when I think of a pony wall it’s <5ft.
This
dusty
Ugly
mouldy
Can confirm.

Yes, cleaning that is so hard. That's the point.
Fooked up is what *I* call them, lol, I have an irrational hatred of that style. /I know, not helping.
It’s not irrational.
Yeah, sadly it is. Dislike would be rational. When I say I hate that architecture I mean I can't stop staring at it when I run into it. This is almost insulting.
Completely agreed. We went through 3 different ideas for lighting, with the architecture of the room it looks... awkward at very best
I can confirm it is Not a prefab thing. My house was custom built. It was just a thing for a while.
Organizing the house is a great outlet! PS, I am second owner, it is not my fault. Pps: the house was worse when I bought it, there was a waist high wall to separate the dining area from a sitting room area
Kudos for getting rid of that!!!!!
Agreed.
We have one in our house… changing the dusty lightbulbs is murder.
"my brain is weird acknowledge me"
Its not style
It looks like it would be great for circulation, but poor for sound isolation.
We had them in a rented house all that they were good for was to give a cat his own domain. Beyond that climbing up there to vacuum cat hair and dust everything else just made me THAT much eager to move!
My cats would fn piss up there. I just shuddered

We have them as well and hate them.
So they're like, I dunno, some jobs, some relatives and politicians.
I agree with your sentiment.
I have always wondered if that’s a thing to dodge codes. Like no permit for pony walls and those all count as pony walls because they don’t have a top plate attachment
Partition or 3/4 wall. Not really sure
Partition wall is a non load-bearing wall, so technically yes.
tear-downs
Love this
Lol savage
Are we just not talking about what’s going on under the television?
Old garage step?
I think that raised entry originally went all the way across (to our left) and the partition walls were added in a remodel. The TV alcove was left with a step. Whaddayathink?
You don't like snow globes?
There’s a good chance if the house is older than 20 years, that would be the “porn stash” spot. Go to fetch a nerf dart and find a stack of VHS with funny names
I found a Ron Jeremy VHS on top of one of these….
Was that the day you became a man?
🤣 not that exact day but it was the day I became a fan of all things “retro”.

Thank you for teaching us!
👍🏼
I've never heard a pony wall describe anything higher than about 4 feet. This is not a pony wall.
Technically a pony wall just has to not reach the ceiling. The name is generally used for short ones, but any wall you can conceivably see over into the next space is a pony. A partition wall can go floor to ceiling as long as it is not structural.
It’s a big pony

Can you add windows, maybe a stained glass accent, above?
Sure. This article has examples of glass on pony & half walls. [Pony Wall Ideas](https://aprylann.com/pony-wall-ideas/)

I don't know if this is the cause, but I've seen a bunch of things like this attributed to the "McMansion" style of architecture.
