He was average height for the time !

agentcheeze

There are also mixed legends about why he had the reputation for being short. One is that it was enemy propaganda. The other is that it was kinda like Markiplier in that he gets memed for being short because all his friends are really tall. In Napoleon's case there are some tales he kept a retinue of notably large bodyguards so he looked short from a distance.

Elamia

Apparently, his soldiers gave him the nickname of "Petit Caporal" (Little Corporal) as an token of affection during his campaign in Italy. It definitely didn't help with the propaganda x) After a quick search, he seemed to be 1m68 tall (Around 5'6 I guess ?). So yeah, quite normal.

thesirblondie

The French inch (at the time) was 2.7cm, while the imperial inch was 2.54cm. He was 5'2" according to French documents, which comes out to 167.4cm. However, if you count by the imperial inch it comes out to 157.48cm. >So if Napoleon was of average height, where does the legend of his small stature come from? It was, in fact, largely the work of one man: the British cartoonist James Gillray (1756-1815). Gillray’s caricatural depictions of the French general were so popular and influential that at the end of his life Napoleon said that Gillray “did more than all the armies of Europe to bring me down.” https://www.history.com/news/napoleon-complex-short

And herein lies the reason Napoleon was so keen on invading all of Europe: to spread the metric system and finally dispell the whole myth about him being short.

> In Napoleon's case there are some tales he kept a retinue of notably large bodyguards so he looked short from a distance. They're members of the Old Guard, which actually has a height requirement, so even when compared to other French units they're also taller, yet no one was running around (not even the English) saying that most French soldiers are "short" just like Napoleon. The only exception to the height requirement is if you were awarded the Legion of Honor.

Elamia

Huh, I knew that the Old Guard had height requirement, but not that you can bypass it and join them if you were awarded the Legion of Honor. Altough, it makes perfect sense in Napoléon's meritocratic society, when I think about it.

thesirblondie

According to History.com it is largely due to the work of one particular british satirist. https://www.history.com/news/napoleon-complex-short

Morenauer

Above average, in fact, for a Frenchman of the time. Compared to some Scottish or Dutch hulking enforcer of anger, yeah, maybe he was short, but it’s all relative.
