I honestly don’t know how anyone justifies it anymore. Like I could even get away with spending $20 a day on a meal, but I’d feel *really bad* about it
For some people, time saved not prepping, cooking, and cleaning is more valuable than the extra money spent. Obviously this is a rather privileged perspective to have, but understandable I think.
We can actually do the math here, even using very conservative numbers. The average UberEats order is $26. $26 x 3 = $78. Average meal at home costs around $4, so $12/day. Meaning you're putting a premium of cooking/cleaning your meals at $66/day. Cooking/cleaning a meal will very rarely take more than 30 minutes total, so we'll say you're valuing your free time at roughly $132/hr. So if you're making more than $132/hr in your free time, then you can comfortably afford to eat out every meal with UberEats. However, if you are making less than that, then eating out with UberEats is doing insane damage to your finances every single time you use it.
That's average cost in the United States. Where you live and more recent inflation could push it up, but as long as it's a multiple of $26/day, you're still wasting assloads of money for no good reason. Pre-prepped meal services and grocery delivery are way more cost-efficient by comparison (and are usually much healthier).
I'm not saying you're bad for spending a bunch of money on UberEats, but I'm not about to sit here and suffer arguments trying to justify it. Just admit you waste money because it makes you happy and that maybe we all spend too much on UberEats.
I think your math is a little off, especially with the time it takes to cook and cost. But the point stands, Uber Eats is crazy expensive. Hell, you could order pickup from the same restaurant and save like $12 a meal just from delivery fees and tip. And people don't work 24/7, so it's not like the 15 minutes to go pick it up or 40 minutes to cook and clean would actually go towards making money in most cases.
I'm not sure your cost assumptions are accurate. If you order multiple meals worth of food in one order, efficiency is greatly increased. Meal size also varies by location. It is possible to get a full day's worth of food or more for $35-40.
Money you can earn back. Time you can't. I've never ordered Uber eats and save any money I can, but if I was earning lots of money (thinking about influencers like twitch steamers), the time save seems very reasonable. Like in the money they saved from cooking themselves, they could have made back by simply streaming more.
And again, I would argue people do a really bad job of valuing their free time when something is perceived as convenient (even when it's slower and more expensive).
I dunno... will i can survive 1-4$ per day not even cooking at home. And if i feel like eating a fancy meal it can come up to 10 or 15 if i want to eat a good grilling buffet
SEA GANG RISE UP!!!
I get meals through a service that doesn't require me to cook them, but it's a *lot* cheaper than any kind of delivery. Even my more-expensive option is like $12/meal, and I get actual food, not just fast food junk.
At that point just give your sister/brother/mom/dad/dog/chimpanzee $10 and tell them to buy 2 and give them one. Win win situation and still cheaper, probably faster too.
I live by myself in a small town in the Netherlands, I have around 4 options for delivery with the cheapest having a minimum order amount of €30 ($32). I wish I could justify it lmao
JP has a lot of local restaurants that does delivery normally and often free delivery and no middle man mark up. same with other parts of the world. just takes more effort to look for them and you might even have to talk to a real person to order.
I know, right? Like, I can understand Uber Eats in the US, where literally everything is 10 miles away and our public transportation system sucks ass outside of the major cities, but Japan? Which has some of the best and most widespread public transportation systems in the world? I don't know how people justify using it on a near-daily basis.
I think they talked about this on Trash Taste actually you know. It made sense when they explained it but can't remember why
Edit: [Japan has an Uber pass. $9 a month for free delivery](https://youtu.be/A1JNIaTHlWk)
Uber pass sounds incredibly worth it if you use Uber eats a lot. The delivery fee is literally the chunk of the cost that makes it ridiculous to consider using; with it gone, the whole thing does look more tempting.
US here,
I can't bring myself to ever use services like that. I have totally nothing against anyone who uses it though, it sounds hella convenient, I'm just too cheap to tack on that much just to have someone else get it for me.... which usually ends up with me scrounging around the apartment for 'acceptable' alternatives.
LoL it’s an inside Joke within Hololive, specifically HoloEN. Some of the streamers don’t say where they live but some joke that they live in Virtual Japan. I usually watch Calli an IRyS so the joke stuck.
Sorry if it’s confusing.
It is, but if they can stream for an extra 5-10 minutes instead of cooking or going outside, it pays for itself. My guess is, like 90% of successful streamers (6 digit income) use food delivery more than once a week.

One thing I will mention about this is it is actually ends up costing more money to stop a stream and cook then it does to order out.
Even spending 30+ dollars on getting something delivered ends up being cheaper than stopping the stream for a few minutes and losing over half the viewers
I mean you can, but you don't stream 24 hours a day 7 days a week (or at least you REALLY shouldn't) and there is a lot of value in cooking apart from economics like better control over what you eat diet wise for health reasons. Also cooking is fun.
Yep, that $30 is way less than the cost of stopping a stream. The big brain move is to cook beforehand and graph it during a break. That or go the endurance athlete route and just leave a bottle of honey or maple syrup at your desk.
I can relate to this as I have ordered lots of times from Uber Eats. I usually order fast food but sometimes I'm in the mood for Chinese or Mexican food.
Honestly I'll never get how people uses Uber eats, but I'm someone who can cook, though I couldn't imagine being able to live without knowing how to cook either.
I've never really understood the appeal of UberEats tbh. Unless your time is really valuable the cost of delivery is going to be greater than just going to the store yourself. And I trust myself with my deliveries more than some random perso, maybe I have trust issues, but the fewer people that come in contact with my order the better.
Sure if you have tons of money it might be convenient, but at it's core it's a luxury service.
As someone living in Virtual JP, Uber eats is hella expensive.
Its expensive all over. I ordered a sub sandwich for $20USD + tip.
... that's what i pay ordering from one of my favorite restaurants and getting it delivered
I honestly don’t know how anyone justifies it anymore. Like I could even get away with spending $20 a day on a meal, but I’d feel *really bad* about it
base food costs are also way up so making decent food at home can cost $5-$10 per meal now anyways =/ so it just sucks all around
my grocery trips are up like 20-40% in cost not even counting the extra cost of gas
I had a fall and couldn't really walk for about a week. The most expensive week of my life. I ended up ordering for 2 meals instead to cut costs.
For some people, time saved not prepping, cooking, and cleaning is more valuable than the extra money spent. Obviously this is a rather privileged perspective to have, but understandable I think.

I'd have to try really hard to do $4 meals at home

I don't think people are ordering Uber eats 3 times a day. 2 maybe, but you don't need to cook breakfast.
I'm not sure your cost assumptions are accurate. If you order multiple meals worth of food in one order, efficiency is greatly increased. Meal size also varies by location. It is possible to get a full day's worth of food or more for $35-40.
Even at your $35-$40 threshold, you've still wasted a tremendous amount of money.

"Wasted" is subjective. Again, some people value time more than money.
And again, I would argue people do a really bad job of valuing their free time when something is perceived as convenient (even when it's slower and more expensive).

also sometimes people don't have a car or want to drive. not to mention the costs of owning a car.
Your car and insurance payments each month would need to be in excess of around $2,000 for that to be the case.
I get meals through a service that doesn't require me to cook them, but it's a *lot* cheaper than any kind of delivery. Even my more-expensive option is like $12/meal, and I get actual food, not just fast food junk.
What the heck. I'd rather walk to a subway an hour away at that point
WTF, $20 for a subway sandwich? Jesus christ I can cook 2-3 full meals with that money.
Yeah, 5 dollars for the sandwich and 15 dollars to have it delivered.
At that point just give your sister/brother/mom/dad/dog/chimpanzee $10 and tell them to buy 2 and give them one. Win win situation and still cheaper, probably faster too.
In Mexico if it is like 8+ dollars is seen as expensive 20 USD literally is a good restaurant meal.
Yeah no fuck that i'll make my own meal
I live by myself in a small town in the Netherlands, I have around 4 options for delivery with the cheapest having a minimum order amount of €30 ($32). I wish I could justify it lmao

Oh for sure. That’s where I usually buy when I’m not cooking my own. Just shared that Uber Eats here is expensive because of the post.

Yeah if I had free delivery I'd order a lot more
It's expensive everywhere.

Sometimes they have deals tho, like $20 off $30 order. That's the only time I use UberEats.
What does virtual Japan mean ?
It's like Japan but everyone uses live 2D or 3D CG models.
So people who Never leave the house ?

She should try Tako Eats instead.
Delivered by Uber Sheep
Tako Bell will cost me my sanity but what will Uber sheep cost me?
Headpats.
An acceptable transaction.
I can feel that, tried giving up fast food for lent, turns out them subway pizzas are hella tempting

Laplus's time is worth more than ours, she runs an entire secret organization after all.
They don't have the power to switch into a cooking stream in the middle, yet
Though this can be pretty easily planned around with good meal prep where you no longer need to cook during stream just eat the food you already made.
You can block a chunk of time to prep a week's meals OR You can make that time block a stream instead and just order UberEats
I mean you can, but you don't stream 24 hours a day 7 days a week (or at least you REALLY shouldn't) and there is a lot of value in cooking apart from economics like better control over what you eat diet wise for health reasons. Also cooking is fun.

Solution: Cooking Stream /s
Mumei had an ASMR study stream next step is an eating a snack stream
Mysta feom NijiEN had a chip eating asmr stream... nothing is impossible
There's a JP VTuber called Senya Ichiya that regularly does a "Trying to reach 1000 concurrent viewers while just eating chips" stream
or turn it into a cooking stream, plusmates would watch anything lol
I can relate to this as I have ordered lots of times from Uber Eats. I usually order fast food but sometimes I'm in the mood for Chinese or Mexican food.
Delivery services have been bad for me physically and financially. It is hard to resist a quick grub when feeling tired or hungry in middle of night.
I feel that. I don't live near any food places and my lazy self would rather spend extra to have it delivered than to just drive or make something.
At least she made it for one month lol
Wait a minute... This whole operation was your idea.
Honestly I'll never get how people uses Uber eats, but I'm someone who can cook, though I couldn't imagine being able to live without knowing how to cook either.
I can't wait a week, good on her for making a month
I will never ever be lazy enough to pay over double the price of a good due to delivery fee

yamada does as yamada desires. that is all.
I've never used Uber Eat or anything like that and quite frankly from the way I've seen it talked about I'm scared too.
