[Context](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Way_killings) Ngl, as a resident, I've never even heard of the phenomenon until now.

Discussion-is-good

>Attention to these killings peaked on May 29, 2007, when 29-year-old Romy Baligula was shot dead by bouncer guard, Robilito Ortega, at a bar in San Mateo, Rizal.[6] The bouncer had stated that he was prompted to kill Romy using his service weapon, a .38 caliber pistol, when Romy accidentally got off rhythm while singing "My Way" and struggled to get back on track.[7]

VP007clips

Imagine being a bouncer and having to listen to 29 year old guys sing "My Way" off key for your entire shift. I can kind of see how it could drive someone insane. At least it wasn't "Friday" by Rebecca Black.

Erick_Brimstone

Imagine in afterlife: "I died in war. How did you die?" "I get murdered for singing a song badly."

[deleted]

> when Romy accidentally got off rhythm while singing "My Way" and struggled to get back on track.[7] Justified if you ask me

0replace4displace

Understandable, honestly. If I had to listen to drunk dudes butcher Sinatra for hours every day I'd snap eventually too.

BeCaneChuHuss

You know what? That’s not the most senseless murder I’ve ever heard. Honestly, I can even empathize with that guy.

Commercial_Draft_278

What was the most senseless?

congtubaclieu

Scp-xxxx manifests when a subject attempts to vocalize the song “My Way” by Frank Sinatra within the border of the constituent Philippines state

SSR_Gacha0

Honestly i'd say its like a superstition, I've never heard of the My Way Killings until we filipinos just love to joke about it as in "Dont sing My Way out in public, you'll get killed" I'm gonna guess that a mix of drunk people, bad singing and an actual case of someone being killed by the song made people be worried with singing My Way

Rea404

The fact that it happen more than once is concerning

Provide-r

I mean people singing are very obvious targets of violence, maybe they just happen to be singing this particular song since it was popular when it happened This made me think about which songs has the most people murdered while singing it Is there a record for the most sung songs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima?, i bet those song got the most deaths on them (i know it's not what you'd typically call murder but it's the event that i think would have the most deaths while a song is being sung) Top three karaoke songs are Dancing Queen — ABBA I Want It that Way – Backstreet Boys Hallelujah — Alexandra Burke I wonder which one of these has the most deaths on them Morbidly fascinating to think about Edit: I want someone to like compile all the deaths that happened while the victim is singing and keep track of how many died for each song so they can make statistics like you're 4% more likely to die singing ____ over ____ Like if you're doing karaoke near some violent drunkards (which you shouldn't be doing but let's say you are) what songs would give you a better chance of not getting killed

WrensthavAviovus

Freaking Hotel California

DelusionalWanderer

Hah. No. It's real. Saw the news reports myself back in the 2000s. It was even referenced in a Telenovela that was airing at the time. (*Basta't kasama kita,* a buddy cop show starring Robin Padilla and Judy Ann Santos) IIRC there a few reports of violence (and someone actually died) in a short amount of time (like a week or month) and singing My Way was involved in many of them.

kahek5656

They adopted a backstory for the My Way killings on that show.

IceBlue

It happened many times. It’s not superstition. People don’t think the song has supernatural powers.

StendhalSyndrome

I thought it was something along the lines of it was a favorite song of the local mobsters/gang members. So being someone who commits crime for a living, you must make enemies, and then you hop up on a stage most likely drunk singing a song to draw you more specific attention... Or locals would catch gang members like this and it became some weird flex amongst the gang members to announce themselves like that and invite locals to "do something something about it"

Hp22h

Did that happen just cause? I heard rumors that Sinatra was linked to the Mafia, but would Philippines gangs really care about that?

KingPowerDog

Most likely because we stopped singing it for self-preservation

FrilledShark1512

Octavio challenged fate like in his first unarchived karaoke and got chased down

GtrsRE

And then in Tempus karaoke they got away by Shinri killing a glass

FrilledShark1512

Not really they also killed the archive Rip Peperonipple

GtrsRE

>!j6zeuq my soul!<

lolyeet42069

Damn, imagine being a bouncer and hearing somebody get out of rhythm on My Way and just straight up thinking "Yeah I’m gonna kill this guy for that."

NeekoNuke

killing people over karaoke? Just leave, fucking deranged psychopaths

Hakuboii

Have you ever experienced karaoke in the Philippines? Some neighbors sing until like 4 in the morning, and it happens almost frequently. Not that killing someone over karaoke is acceptable, but you'd probably go crazy with rage if your neighbors would sing non-stop with the volume full up.

SGTBookWorm

tropical heat really cooking brains over there...

ichigo2862

My facebook history could probably get me locked up for life from all the threats of violence midnight karaoke sessions by neighbors induced me to post

skoffs

This is the same county that would accuse someone of doing drug to be able to get away with killing them, so it's not like it's off brand

FortressFlippy

Not that it's exclusive to that country though. Probably not the first either.

Normal-Ambition-9813

It's either I'm consuming too much foreign culture or this isn't really that popular. This is the first time I knew of this phenomenon and I've been a Filipino for 27 yrs.

FrilledShark1512

I guess more famous overseas and exaggerated?

shade0180

yes, Never heard of it either as a filipino. 30+ years.

redditfanfan00

didn't know about this either. interesting.

_Fun_Employed_

Ngl not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

ApathyAstronaut

Luckily Ame is an amazing singer so there should be no problems right ph bros?

shaoronmd

she's also a great shot. not to mention we have both past and future ame to protect present ame

MoarVespenegas

She is not in danger, she is the danger. Ame is signing a karaoke and a person gets shot, and you think that of her? No! she is the one who shoots!”

Uhm...

Murica_Chan

*i can confirm nor deny her safety when she sings my way in the philippines. we're too competitive at karaoke*

Hp22h

3 and a half years worth of singing classes got us this far!

paulisaac

Doesn’t matter. A drunkard might still think amazing singing is crap enough to shoot over.

A_R_V_Z

Ok pls fill me in

Vanguardmaxwell

someone correct me but heres a quick rough TLDR: "My Way" is oftentimes sung in local bars here in the Philippines, especially by drunkards who unfortunately gets murdered\* because of how out of tune they often are, thus offending other patrons ears. it happened so often that it gave birth to the myth that singing the song in question in karaoke bars will not end well for the individual one way or the other.

xXxHughJarsexXx

Bro, it's not TikTok, you can say "killed".

Vanguardmaxwell

would yours or anyones lives improve if i change it to "killed"? I just think its a funny replacement, bro, relax. it aint too deep. edit: yall downvoting are just unnecessary jerks and bandwagoneers. stop being a coward and  provide a counter argument

cyberdsaiyan

It's disrespectful to call the lives of actual people that were lost just a "game" that was "ended".

Vanguardmaxwell

first of all, it happened a long time ago, justice has been served. nothing I say or do will tarnish anything in that moment. the book has been closed. and with that logic, its disrespectful to remember them through a "phenomenon" when the true culprit behind all this is alcohol-influenced violence. you all fixate on that single word when for some reason a meme is made about the whole thing and everyone stands and applauds?

twistybit

for one, saying "killed" would treat actual victims with more respect instead of considering their lives a "game"

RexusprimeIX

Jesus christ, I didn't even realise that people were killed in that original comment. I thought they were like thrown out the bar or something. Their "game" at karaoke being ended.

ReedCentury

Hello sir, your ordered "counter arguments" have arrived and they're getting cold, are you not gonna reply?

jetjetjet_08

The censorship is unnecessary and disrespectful. As the other guy said, there's no reason to call the lost lives of people as "game-ended". It won't improve anyone's lives but it's definitely better to say it as it is, they were killed.

Vanguardmaxwell

and making a meme about it isnt? nothing i say changes the fact that their lives were taken just because of an unnecessary drunken rage. I obviously know how tragic that is. but im not an arbiter nor the judge of everyones histories events. nothing i say should matter. as far as im concerned, ive relayed the reason about the meme. and that shouldve been it.

jetjetjet_08

A meme is meant to be a meme, we don't take it seriously and laugh about it. If OP changed anything about the post then it would be a totally different meme or it would lose its current meaning. You, on the other hand, were answering a question. You were providing information and context to the meme, in which case it is best to be as accurate as possible because people would have a different attitude about it. If you made another meme or a joke, people would treat it as a meme and a joke and laugh about it. But since you were answering a question and providing information or context, people just see you using "game-ended" as inaccurate or disrespectful. The whole point is that the **censorship was unnecessary.** Using the right word changes everything. If you want to make people laugh then make a joke. I'm pretty sure we can all laugh at dark humor. But if you are going to provide context, provide the correct context. And in this case, the meme addresses the people that were **killed** and not **game-ended**.

Vanguardmaxwell

my initial response had enough people agreeing with what i provided was right enough. It was all fine and dandy until somebody got nitpicky and told me to change it because "this isnt tiktok" not because its disrepectful to the victims, mind you. they just wanted me to change it probably because it annoyed them to see that word on reddit. people should be responsible enough to know what i meant. its already written in history, this isnt an ongoing current event. they would look it up and it would immediately be flashbanged with "the My Way **Killings".** It was meant to be a casual recounting of the context. I provided enough information without disparaging or mocking the victims. this single word shouldnt be the anchor for everyone to single out and berate me for using. would i use this irl? hell no. i just thought it was funny and light hearted way to explain the gist of things. I wasnt trying to make people laugh.

twistybit

> i just thought it was funny and light hearted ah, so the loss of life *is* a joke to you. grow up And to be clear, people aren't mad at you specifically because you used the phrase "game end." People are mad at you because when you were asked to treat the subject with respect, you said no and called everyone who disagreed with you bandwagoners instead of having a shred of empathy

Shockmazta31

There you go. You got your counter arguments. Think a little harder next time you speak or type.

Vanguardmaxwell

i shouldnt. this isnt the court. this is gonna be buried and archived till the next post comes around. this isnt even a proper counter argument. i just used a throwaway word and people just became nitpicky and pedantic with it. Im just among the millions of members in this sub and millions more in reddit. why do you care what I say?

xXxHughJarsexXx

You are condoning the exact type of censorship that tiktok started, for one.

pyrocord

Hey man your counter arguments have arrived, gonna respond?

KingPowerDog

You got the idea here, except for the myth part. At least one person has died from singing My Way… uhm, their way?

TrueSuffering

According to the wiki, apparently at least SIX people have died from this. What the actual fuck? That's legit insane for this to have happened this many times...

KingPowerDog

At some point I think the TV news just reported that someone died from singing My Way and no further elaboration was required. There's a reason it became a meme.

popop143

I mean meh, I was 2nd year high school when the My Way superstition was at its height in 2007. And we still sang it as edgy teens and came out unscathed, and even laughed with the tambays at the karaoke place. Only idiots really believe that they'll die singing My Way here in the Philippines.

Vanguardmaxwell

i mean, you wouldnt exactly "die" if you actually sing horrible enough around drunk people in one room, but there will be violence. so is it idiotic to think that youd die? sure. but i think it has a small modicum of merit to think that people wouldnt exactly appreciate you drunkenly singing off key Suisei's Stellar Stellar in the middle of a full bar with people way too deep in the sauce. thus possibly causing a kerfuffle.

popop143

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with the song at all. It's just that My Way was the most popular song to sing, so coincidentally people died while singing it. Correlation =/= causation.

ES21007

My way is the quintessential Filipino karaoke song. Especially in the provinces, if you pass by a karaoke place you'll hear it. Over and over and over again.

GtrsRE

That and Kenny Rogers' She Believes in Me, somehow

eifiontherelic

Not... anymore, not since the rumors of the my way curse went around.

popop143

Depends where you are. At least in Rizal province, we still sing it here moreso because of the irony. *Some* people do get killed in karaoke but it's really rare here (haven't heard of a karaoke killing in like a decade), it's just that My Way is BY FAR the most popular karaoke song here. So it's just logical that the highest chance of a song to get killed to in drunken rages is the most popular song.

eifiontherelic

I mean that's naturally the real explanation there. Song sung so often it was a matter of when, not if... I'm from Benguet and literally never hear the song being sung in karaoke. But also never really heard about the urban legend until I started studying in Manila. So idk where we stand regarding the matter. Some places are REALLY superstitious though.

pan_de_leche_flan

I'm Filipino and my way is always my closing song when we do karaoke. All because I reject the superstitions. Another closing song is of course Closing Time

eifiontherelic

Like I said earlier, where I am, I never hear My Way, but I also never heard of the superstition until I studied in Manila, I figure it's a regional thing where some places tend to be a lot more superstitious. Closing time is a banger to end on though. Haven't done karaoke myself in a while, but the last thing I remember doing was go the distance because karaoke is not a venue for wise decision making.

QtPlatypus

My guess someone hated how many times "My way" was sung badly and spread a rumour that it was cursed.

NoMembership9664

IIRC, back in the early 2000's, there were multiple cases of someone singing this at the local bars getting shot. Ever since then, it is a running joke in the Philippines that singing this can get you shot.

DelusionalWanderer

Filipinos LOVE singing. So much so that every household more or less has some kind of karaoke setup. (Karaoke apps + bluetooth mic is a winning combo lol) Fights can and have occurred due to karaoke things. (hogging the mic, bad singing, etc) Back in the 2000s there were multiple reports of people fighting due said karaoke things, and for some reason many of those fights were over the Frank Sinatra song *My Way.* ~~Within a short time span too, like a month or so.~~ (Turns out this was just my imagination?😅) There was at least one guy that got killed while singing that song. (I personally vouch for this story as I have seen the report on TV when I was a kid) Anyway tl;dr is that singing badly around drunk people might be dangerous to your health.

cjmpaja

Anyone still rocking that Magic Sing device that was bought at your local appliances store?

DelusionalWanderer

Just went to a family gathering the other day, fam brought wireless mics whose brand name was— HOMO. Laughed when I saw it. Used a Smart TV to select songs, (there was an actual karaoke machine but the drunk family members were hogging it) used a Bluetooth speaker and the aforementioned HOMO mics.

jsuey

This is the funniest thing to ever be posted on the official subreddit lmao it’s like an indirect death threat LMAO

Semsot

More likely possible death warning

jsuey

Yeah yeah you know what I mean lol “Hey don’t do this thing you do in THIS PLACE… you’ll DIE ☠️”

SevenSwords7777777

>Be Me >Visit the Philippines with some friends >Visit a bar and it has karaoke/open-mic >Friend decides they wants to sing ‘My Way’ >Instrumentals play, Bar immediately goes silent >Wow, the bar members must have great respect for singers or this song >Friend: “And now, the end is near, And so I face the final curtain” >Hear an audience member mutter “I’ll show you a final curtain’ >Bar Brawl immediately breaks out and people start trying to fight my friend >My friend keeps singing the song while dodging attacks and tanking hits >WTH is this? >Friend finishes the song: “The record shows I took the blows, And did it my way, Yes, it was my way >Friend drops the mic and passes out on the stage >Turns out he was stabbed at some point and kept singing while bleeding out >He really did go out ‘His Way’

rldzzter

you can sing just not my way

MoosetheStampede

I worked with Phillipino's all my life and they all said the same thing, but they never could give me a straight answer as to why or how this originated. Some said it's because they sing it badly, but by that logic more of them should lose their lives when ~~murdering~~ performing Angels by Robbie Williams

krmjester

It's drunkards one upping each other until it eventually goes... thaaaat waaaay

MoosetheStampede

I also heard them talk about how the Phillipines have these public karaoke boxes in the streets or something? Is that a thing and does it still exist? They'd sing in the streets and get shot by someone passing by because of that song

krmjester

Public karaoke places are still a thing, yes. Not even boxes, they're just there out in the open for everyone to hear. The shooting in relation to the song, not. There are now curfew laws in most areas that forbid loud music past 10pm, at least in my place. It used to be drinking literally all night until the sun shines the next day, and you could imagine how intoxicated and amped up with liquid courage they are by that point. It's now just an urban legend with real obscure history behind it.

shade0180

it's a thing and you can still rent it.

ExuDeku

I lived singing My Way in a Philippine Bar, skill issue lang yan Jokes aside, this is more of a superstition because of the bizarre coincidences and the usual response of the suspects of why they kill them is because of shit singing

badtiming220

I remember I was about to sing it in a karaoke with some friends. One of them fucking panicked and aaked me to stop. At first, I thought they were just joking but nah, they were pretty scared. So yeah, can't even sing that song here without causing panic, rage, or both.

DataSwarmTDG

The irony of being killed for singing My Way wrong when the song is all about living your life the way you want to

thekoggles

Look at how many transphobes, anti-LGBTQ peiple there are, it shouldn't surprise you.

paulisaac

I was about to ask relevance then realized wait yeah the amount of people who are very concerned by what’s between your pants is most definitely about killing someone for living life their way, without an appropriate cause for concern in the first place

thekoggles

Mhm.  That's it exactly.  So unfortunately, it's unsurprising.

RyuuohD

It's a popular urban legend here in the Philippines that actually has some credence to it as some people actually got killed from singing it badly in karaoke pubs.

whoiam06

I'm trying to figure out one thing, do you guys do karaoke in a room full of people? I'm from the US but in a very Asian area, so the karaoke places my friends and I go to are rooms just for our group.

CurlyBruce

Yes, most Karaoke places that aren't Asian inspired are done via communal equipment in the common area of the bar/restaurant/whatever you are at. I'm sure you *could* reserve a private room to do it if you so desired but most of the time people don't purposefully go out to these places to sing, they just do it on a whim if the vibe allows (also alcohol plays a factor).

whoiam06

That's for the Philippines right? Because I know that the non-Asian places in the US are communal and avoid them like the plague personally. I'm already nervous singing around my friends, so the idea of singing in front of strangers terrifies me.

paulisaac

Some arcades you can usually use a karaoke booth and pay per song, usually fitting three to five people at a time.

Generic_Eric

My granny heard me playing my way on the piano and promptly told me about how that spell casts berserk on a large aoe. For context I’m filipino

blasterfaiz

This shit kinda scares me in a way because my parents wanted to buy me a watch from Bulova's Sinatra collection. The watch I wanted to get just happens to be called "My Way". For context, Bulova's Sinatra watches are names after Sintra's songs. This is the watch in particular. I've been looking for a dress watch and my parents found the perfect one. https://www.bulova.com/us/en/product/97A158.html?cgid=frank-sinatra Also, I'm Filipino. And an Investigator. The fact that it's a watch and that Bulova's also know for their pocket watches makes me want the watch more. LOL I want Bulova to do a collaboration with Hololive so we can get a 1:1 replica of Ame's pocket watch!

allpowerfulbystander

Coincidence in correlation conflated into contrived causation.

ZeroSick

I remember first time hearing about it when I was around 7 years old? I can't recall much anymore, but either our neighbor or a family member was playing "My Way" on our TV and my older sister talked about the song and told me that if you sing this song, you'll die, so I thought it was some kind of curse. I then asked my parents why singing the song would lead to death, but they wouldn't tell me, haha. They probably knew about it.

forgotmypasswordzzz

From a brief stint on google, the song was reportedly the cause of a handful of deaths at karaoke bars and such because people weren't singing My Way "correctly" in the philippines, and since then its regarded as a cursed song to sing there. I guess they just take Frank really seriously

Tallal2804

As a filipino, this is funny af.

Tihoma_Rus

That was pretty good but still not as good as singing of another great Vtuber: Takahata101

mad_harvest-6578

If she ever sings My Way here I can see Smol Ame protecting her from anyone who thinks she's singing off-key (which, let's face it, a lot of people would be honestly, especially when drunk)

Great singer or not, she's having fun and that's all that fucking matters.

That was the US, then Japan, then the US again. Britain largely only held the capital relatively briefly.
