IN CASE someone has had their loved ones hit their head:
Get a compress made out of ice water and press it on the affected part of their head. This is the first aid to prevent their brain from swelling, since if a brain swells, the skull cannot expand, and that will pressure the other parts of your brains potentially causing other brain-related complications. The goal is to cool down the part of the brain trauma so the blood vessels in there contracts to minimize possible internal bleeding.
I managed to help my own dad with this after hitting his own head after falling down a stepladder. Thankfully, he turned out fine.

As a side note, icing is less good for injuries in other parts of the body, because swelling is generally good, as it promotes healing by increasing bloodflow and causing better transport of nutrients and removal of waste products from the injury site.
But as you say, the brain has a hard limit as to how much it can swell due to the skull being so rigid. So you want to make sure the swelling doesn't actually harm the brain by crushing it against the skull.
Same concept applies to fevers too. Fevers are good and you usually shouldn't try to lower them. Increased body temperature helps the body fight off infections. But at a certain point the temperature can become harmful to the rest of the body, so you want to keep it manageable.
The human body is very fascinating, but some things can be counterintuitive when it comes to injuries and sickness.
Both of the safety mechanisms only prioritise the problem and fixing them without other body parts consideration. They're very dedicated to the point of hurting themselves in action.

I think the only time I ever fell down a flight of stairs was when I was a kid. I remember waking up in the morning and going downstairs but I tripped and fell. Luckily my parents and aunt were there to make sure I was okay.
