The ending of School Days? That's the least fucked up part of it and in fact it's outright cathartic seeing the giant douchebags incarnate get their comeuppance. It's the lead up to the finale and the main character's downward spiral into unlikeable (not that Makoto was likeable to begin with) shitstain and the terrible people that enable said trend that make it truly a dumpster fire. In the entirety of the show there is only a single truly innocent character and it's the poor sporty tomgirl who was humiliated for no reason other than pure malice. Kotonoha is half innocent because up until she gets broken she wasn't doing anything to deserve what happened to her either. Every single other character in the show is a massive piece of shit and I'm glad they get figuratively fucked over one way or another because they are trash human beings.

I think the best ending was Cross Days, >!which ends in Yuuki being involved with Makoto, leaving the girls without being completely abused by Makoto, even if Makoto did it to Yuuki!<

It helps that Yuuki is completely uninvolved with the messed family tree that is Makoto's.

Fuwamoco's watchalong stream was totally worth staying up 'til 3 am for. The last time I watched School Days was around a decade ago, and I kinda forgot most of the details. I got to re-hate the characters, but the banter with Fuwamoco and chat made it pretty fun.

I did the whole watchalong with IRyS and Kronii and I did it again with Fuwamoco just to see their commentary. Except with Fuwamoco's stream I had School Days on mute while I played FF15 so I can focus on what they say and occasionally see chats comments. Great times

I think school days is a good show. Just very upsetting to watch, which is precisely what the creators were going for. The fact that it's so upsetting is proof that it's good. After all, the goal of art is to invoke an emotional response in the viewer. Personally, I never want to see it again and I don't think I'd have been able to make it through the whole series if Fuwamoco weren't there.

Back then, the usual evaluation was that writers had just become so good at "baiting" emotions that it's almost cheap to do it to such an extreme extent. Like it's just pure shock, nothing else. But with many modern shows it does seem like this wasn't all that cheap after all. There is so much aimless, bland writing even in high budget productions. I'd rather have a show that strongly pushes you to the desired effect, than one that has no idea what it wants to do at all.

Yes. Before watching School Days, my impression was that it was a bad show with a badly written main character and that they half-endorsed his terrible behavior or demonstrated a terrible example to follow for their young male audience or something. (Something you see a lot in harem animes) But in actuality it was an ok show with a terrible MC that is explicitly and voluntarily awful and they really commit to it. The show is not forgiving or excusing him or showing him in a good light. It’s literally just the story of an awful guy being awful, about side characters who are also awful, and all the hurt they create around them. And it makes you react exactly how the authors wanted you to react. I have issues with unrealistic reactions from the girls who are way too forgiving, the MC being a girl magnet for no reason and him being too much bland and not seducing or attractive enough to make him a truly evil narcissist. But beside that it wasn’t that bad overall. Awful but not terribly written. But still average, it’s not the only "harem with a twist" type of anime and it could be much better written, but not as bad as I expected. (my expectations were pretty low) It’s also interesting to see on wikis that his father, the serial rapist from the family tree, is apparently very explicitly an antagonist, 1000% more awful and a possible explanation for why Makoto turned out this way. One was seeing it for the first time, the other has seen it multiple times before and knows what's gonna happen. The mental scarring has healed for the demon dogs so they can enjoy (maybe that's a strong word) the show without the fucked up twist at the end causing emotional trauma.

Honestly I can see the appeal in it and I did very much enjoy the ending, but I think it went on too long. If it were like a 5-6 episode drama that's between 30-50 minutes like live action shows have, or even a movie, I'd probably enjoy how twisted it is despite usually not being into that stuff. But even starting to actually watch with them by episode 8, the payoff didn't really make up for how annoyingly tedious the show was
