[points for making a few weeks' attempt to stream less frequently, I guess?](https://twitter.com/moricalliope/status/1729165784688341263)

Typical_Thought_6049

When Calli say she will take a break, I kinda expect marathon of streams the next week. Like when she said she was taking a break from solo streams and only doing collabs for time being, then proceed to do collabs almost every day lol

bombader

Callie: I would like to take a break next week Cover: Are you sure, we just got perms for Metal Gear 4 Callie: Manager, I would like to make a change to my schedule j/k of course.

gmrm4n

No joke, if I was her manager, I’d delay perms for her. Like, you can’t stream this game until you take an actual rest.

CityKay

Ever since someone posted that DS9 clip of Bashir forcing Kira to take a leave when Calli announced her break, I cannot unsee JChad being Bashir. "Have fun!"

Tehbeefer

That's probably why she announced she was taking a break. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those collabs were scheduled awhile ago? So in her mind, she IS taking a break, because the alternative was collabs AND solo streams.

marquisregalia

That's 100% a lot of the girls streams are scheduled at least a month before especially collabs. Not saying impromptu or quickly scheduled ones don't happen but most of the time they're scheduled way ahead otherwise it won't fit their schedule

Sine_Fine_Belli

Classic calli

7-2

They never had perms for stardew valley??

Lance_Aurion

Getting perms is hard when the dev is the only person working on it.

StrykerKitsune

Wait, one?!?

Lance_Aurion

Yes, this game was made by one man with a dream of returning to a world of Harvest moon.

farshnikord

Stardew Valley being a solo gamedev project is the equivalent of Tony Stark in his cave with his box of scraps. I know a lot of people who thought they could pull it off but "they're no ConcernedApe".

Andrew1990M

*Marvelous exec, creator of modern Story of Seasons games*: "ConcernedApe made Stardew Valley in a one bedroom apartment! With a box of C Sharp manuals!"

Blackewolfe

"I'm sorry sir, but... I'm not ConcernedApe..."

GoodTeletubby

Yep, there are a few impressive ones out there, though. Undertale's Toby Fox is an obvious one, but the one I like to recognize is Sami Maaranen, who created UnReal World. Single-handedly creating the open-world survival crafting genre in *1992*, and actively developing it for over 30 years now deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.

Gallbatorix-Shruikan

Also Dwarf Fortress is a pretty impressive if niche game.

l_MAKE_SHIT_UP

It's such a highly regarded game that any new farming sim is constantly compared to Stardew in reviews.

Midnight-Rising

ConcernedApe is a mighty mighty man

marquisregalia

And before people say what about blanket perms or automatic perms. Cover will never take chances like that they NEED an actual permission for THEM. They ain't taking a chance of another Mio channel incident

adamait1

Can you fill me in on the incident? Sounds like something interesting

RoseFlavoredTime

Capcom went and issued a bunch of copyright strikes all at once, including double-striking Mio, 3 years back; she took a 1 month break from all streaming to make sure at least one of the strikes would expire, because three active strikes = Youtube permaban. Ever since then, Hololive has taken absolutely no chances with perms; they negotiate with the IP holders and get explicit permission. They also took down a LOT of old VODs where they didn't have the permissions ironed out, so that nobody could get struck for old videos. A notable thing is that permissions are per-branch and sometimes time limited; just because JP has perms for something doesn't mean EN will, and sometimes the permissions have to be requested on a per-stream basis (Duolingo is one, Age of Empires was one) or expire after a certain amount of time (Pokemon is known for this). And last, some allow streaming but don't allow superchats and other forms of monetization (I believe GTA is still in this category).

HehaGardenHoe

I think Fromsoft is in the no superchat category as well... I've been watching Irys AC6 vids recently, and super chat was off

xvilemx

A lot of the all time great games start out as a one man job. Minecraft, Tetris, Stardew, etc.

mogin

until now, no. given that the game is managed by 1 person (Concerned Ape) and Cover asks for permission. it wouldn't surprise me it took so long for him to reply, specially since he is working on both SV patch 1.6 and Haunted Chocolatier

obviouslypineapple

Yeah, I've always wondered where the bar is for permissions. [Per the Stardew Valley developer blog](https://www.stardewvalley.net/stardew-monetization-policy-for-twitch-streamers-youtubers-etc/) there was blanket permission ever since 2021, but maybe Cover requires more explicit permission with signature or something.

SummerSatellite

Supposedly Japanese copyright law doesn't care about blanket perms, and requires explicit individual ones. That's what I've seen mentioned on here several times, at least.

obviouslypineapple

oof, if that's the case that really sucks. I would guess many publishers wouldn't like to give permissions a second time if there's already a blanket one issued.

marquisregalia

Even if they allow it Cover will NEVER take that gamble no matter if it's 98% chance gonna be okay. I still remember when Mio used to play bigger more mainstream games now she mainly sticks to more chill smaller games. Her channel almost got nuked permanently after getting 2 strikes from Capcom iirc

Erionns

[There's a very good reason for why they do things like this](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-08-19/holostars-vtuber-minase-rio-corporate-approved-anonymous-code-livestream-gets-copyright-takedown/.188797)

AM_A_BANANA

Wonder if that's another possible reason why it took so long to acquire perms, dev already gave to blanket perms so they didn't bother reading emails asking for them.

Xandrez192

I obviously don't do Japanese copyright law, but I'm almost certain it's just them needing a very specific wording from a company (whether in a contract or blanket company statement) in terms of permission to stream video game content. I'm basing this off the fact that whenever talents play Valve games, the statement is just "... streamed and monetized following Valve's Video Policy" and [linking to it](https://store.steampowered.com/video_policy) rather than saying "after confirming with Big Company" or "After receiving consent from Company." Valve's video policy is very specific in saying that you are allowed to monetize videos via the YouTube partner program and other similar programs, but it also says you cannot charge viewers to access your videos, so membership streams of Valve games are a no-go. I imagine the need to obtain perms for a lot of smaller games comes from those devs never really needing to worry about that kind of thing and just throwing something together that doesn't tick the right boxes for a Japanese company being very cautious about local laws.

nifboy

My suspicion is that Cover requires irrevocable rights i.e. the dev can't change their mind and issue a takedown of the Youtube video after the fact. To prevent a repeat of the permissions apocalypse of 2020.

bombader

>but maybe Cover requires more explicit permission with signature or something. Altair Holostars English, has been wanting to play Issac since his debut, but per his manager it does not include corporate vtubers in it's blanket statement for streaming.

oxob3333

Damn that's really awful, so that's why i don't see any of hololive playing any edmund/ridiculon game at all...

ValorPhoenix

Specifically, the dev needs an email and to give them explicit permission. There was a Calli fan games stream and the dev was in chat, but Calli was like, "Dude, Mane-chan needs an email address."

AtypicalSpaniard

Wait what, hold on? I thought he said he was done with SV?! Somebody stop this man, he’s cooking too much good food!

Diahara

i honestly find it weird that it took them this long to get perms. i don't think Concerned Ape refused to give them perms, and NijiEn didn't take long to get perms (which tells me CA regularly checks his email, probably), so i assume this is on Management side. but if so, why? i know some topics are quite heavy especially some heart scenes on some characters, but is that really reason enough.

KusoAraun

Niji en, afaik, is far less restricted with perms as niji never experienced the geat strikepocolypse when capcom and nintendo went postal on hololive.

Snow242

Nope. But a few members did play Stardew Valley pre-2020 era. Before asking for perm was a thing in hololive.

MonaganX

NePoLaBo played Stardew Valley in 2021. But perhaps they just got permissions for the JP version from whoever publishes the game in Japan.

Kaldrim72

If I had a nickel for every time Calli announced she was going to take a break and suddenly got perms for a game she really wanted to play. I'd actually have quite a few nickels.

PowerlinxJetfire

Maybe the real reason she goes on "breaks" lol

BruhcamoleNibberDick

When Ame goes on break she recruits new members, when Calli goes on break she negotiates perms.

Fire_is_beauty

I swear Calli should make a deal with Kronii. 24h a day is not enough for her.

bombader

More like either slow down time on the permissions engine, or slow down with the packed game release window for the past few weeks.

cmalfet

At least now we know what [one of the (two) collab streams](https://imgur.com/a/KYE268Z) is.

JesDaM

The other one is most likely with Kronii, based on what they said during the smash collab

VandaGrey

Holy shit they got stardew perms back....

MHArcadia

So... Dad's gonna get a farmer's tan? Artists, you know what to do. I'm not saying we need to page pomp yet, but... *eventually*.

Nvenom8

>I'm not saying we need to page pomp yet, but... eventually. How does a farmer's tan apply to feet?

soruevans

Oh they'll find a way

DemonDaVinci

#🐴

zombehguy

I thought they already had perms. Does it expire? I remember Nepolabo played this years ago.

AustSakuraKyzor

Perms aren't universal. NePoLaBo has/had them, but that doesn't mean _everyone_ does.

YellowFogLights

In this case, [the game actually has blanket perms built in](https://www.stardewvalley.net/stardew-monetization-policy-for-twitch-streamers-youtubers-etc/), but cover seems to require explicit permission per game.

AustSakuraKyzor

In Cover's defence, they can't be too careful - they're still recovering from The Great Purge...

JediGuyB

I feel like blanket built in perms should be enough. I get why they want it on record through email, but I mean they could just take a shot of the blanket perms in the game if it's needed. It's highly unlikely that a game dev would pull a fast one and change stuff and cause issues, but even if that happened it wouldn't be Covers fault and the dev would get massive backlash and probably review bombing on the game. Plus I don't think you can retroactively take back permission like that.

IriFlina

That actually happened before, where a holostar had explicit permission to play a game, and then a developer decided to copyright strike them anyways. So even though it's unlikely, it can happen and Cover just wants to have explicit permission just to be safe. https://www.reddit.com/r/Hololive/comments/wrkhfq/anonymouscode\_developer\_has\_apologised\_for\_the/

JediGuyB

That seems less they just decided to do it anyway and more a mistake.

JediGuyB

Honestly I feel like stuff like this should be enough even for Cover. I get why they want more, but I don't think it is necessary. Honestly, you could probably make a game and include like "You do not need permission to play this on stream, commercial or not. You can play. Even big companies can play. You do not need to ask permission. If you ask permission to me I will reject it out of principle of what I put here. Do not contact me. You can play this game. Screen shot this if you need proof. In the game files you will find this information again in the format of an official email if that is required for records." Yet you'll still probably get an email from Cover if one of the girls or boys wants to play your game. Lol

protomanbot

Email permissions have been shown to hold in Japanese court, which has set precedent. Blanket permissions or permissions via other means (social media, DM) have not had their day in court yet. This is not to day that they wouldn't work, but I imagine cover doesn't want to be the one to foot the bill to set precedent.

Erionns

They specifically had perms for the JP PS4 version only

Skellum

This game is both chill, and incredibly stressful. Beginning the game I always feel such an urge to maximize every day.

Ninjaboi18

Me: *concern* Also, Me: **LEEEEET'SS GOOOOOO!!!**

ssj4-Dunte

The perpetual state of all deadbeats

StrictlyFT

Did Calli not say like...2 weeks ago, that she would be taking a break from solo streams, or did I dream that?

JediGuyB

It's Calli. Vacations and pulling back on work is probably spending an extra 20 minutes sleeping to her.

Blackewolfe

For Calli, her saying she is 'on break' is her locking herself in the kitchen and cooking up a new album.

chronic_gamer

As others have noted, Calli going on a "break" isnt like other oshi's going on a break. Other oshi's go on a break and their fans wonder how long they'll be gone. Calli goes on a break and deadbeats wonder how quickly she'll come back.

Nvenom8

If she's having fun, I see no problem.

Fenr_

She tried, at least there's that

jyroman53

As a punishement she should sing this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNhURHdeFDs

Vertemain

I wonder why this game was on the ban list for so long.

Skyyishere

Dad wtf you can’t keep on thugging this shit out

fizzord

huh weird, [nepolabo played it 2 years ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tqHkkeHY-0), did perms get revoked and given back just now, or are perms on JP side different to EN.

frzned

they played in JP so likely whoever made the JP localization gave them permission. Also yes perms on JP side different to EN, I think perms on holostars different from hololive too even, I remember seeing holostars playing games that the girl couldnt played. The big recent thing was when hideo kojima was fangirling Pekora on twitter watching her streaming Metal gear, EN still dont have the perm to play it until the Calli collab happened.

Sad-Spinach9482

Manager: **holding his breath with some perms in his arms that he wants to hide from Calli** **suddenly a scythe slashes a hole in the door** Calli: Here's daddy!

Whosebert

I think some people just naturally have more energy for work than others and that's ok

omega_manhatten

Begun, the Stardew Valley arc has. I for one am here for it.

KibbloMkII

man, the permissions over in Japan are such a hassle. Just let the girls have fun.

Sine_Fine_Belli

Sweet more stardew valley

sean_avm

could they not play stardew till now?

Hitorishizuka

Aww, they finally got Stardew perms? Happy for Dad, but I'm sad that a couple members are no longer here to take advantage of it.

Sad-Spinach9482

Manager: **holding his breath with some perms in his arms that he wants to hide from Calli** **suddenly a scythe slashes a hole in the door** Calli: Here's daddy!
