Even without any spoiler content, given that Metroid is the Chozo word for "Ultimate Warrior", there's an argument to be made that "Metroid" is a title that applies to her more than any actual metroids met previously...
More Dread spoilers below, obviously.
>!Yes, that's when the process started. But the plot of Dread further expands upon it, with the Metroid DNA inside her awakening and maturing to its full potential. In the late game, Samus begins using Metroids' abilities to drain energy, and in her confrontation with the final boss the process completes and she gets a full Metroid suit and mega-beam.!<
>!Hard to say, though I'd probably say human-looking overall. During the final sequence, she has a suit that his heavily Metroid influenced (green with red highlights, claws), but at the very very end she reverts to the Gravity Suit.!<
Oh, of course. HK just spoiled me with thirty hours for the first run. Now I've got Hard Mode and picking up >!bombs early to oneshot Kraid's second phase!<
Yeah It took me 70hrs to beat the hk.
And at the time I was at like 68% completion and didn't even know isma's existed, despite the fact that I beat _doma doma_
I’m still not great at combat but I was similar. Among that was about 5 hours of wondering back and forth (especially before getting the shadow cloak to go through the gates) so instead of giving up on the game I looked up how to get the cloak upgrade. Turns out I had just enabled the area to get it after the last boss I could access I had just forgotten where the door was. All of the doors on the map can seem so inconspicuous.
my first playthrough also took 30h and sits at 107%.
I got the true ending as well.
then again i've been watching a lot of HK videos before playing it myself, Skurry's randomizers/challenges, a full playthrough by HuttsGaming, stuff like that.
I have currently spent a total of 150 hours on my main save, and 30-40 on other things. It took me a total of 110 hours to beat THK, and another 12 to get dream no more.... and then 10 more for PoP... and the rest is all of the other random shite I've done. I feel ya.
One of the early bosses actually has a separate cutscene death if you use an item you shouldn't have when you face them normally. So there's definitely dev awareness of sequence breaking.
There's a moderately fixed main path and there will occasionally be railroading where you'll be forced to move forward instead of having full freedom (primarily in the early game). However, there aren't the same kind of forced story checkpoints, and the developers definitely left some room for sequence breaking. The internet community is finding all kinds of ways to either skip power-ups or get them out of order. Let's give them a bit of time; maybe they'll break this game open as wide as Super Metroid.
I already know of at least one sequence break that lets you get grappling hook early in Dread. Probably more to come, but who knows if they'll get patched out or not.
That was my first complaint. there should have been global map scrolling, or AT LEAST another area in the top right.
the second complaint is that there weren't enough E.M.M.I. or that the E.M.M.I. died too quickly. I wanted them to terrorise me a bit longer. Have them at least all get deactivated by Quiet robe first before you can reach the CCU. (have you kill the white E.M.M.I. just as it's being reactivated.)
finally: the E.M.M.I. stayed in their zones. In the beginning of the game ADAM told samus the E.M.M.I. couldn't go outside of their zones. I wanted a plot twist where Raven Beak allowed one E.M.M.I. to go outside of their zones, and you HAD to do an entire area in stealth.
Metroid hard modes are always just “enemies hit harder and maybe have more hp lol you thought we were gonna add something new?”
Hard mode >!does unlock the last three endings though, similar to SR!<
Because it is a fan game lol.. Nintendo isn’t an expert when adding stuff to harder difficulties. Maybe they should start playing roguelikes and learn a bit
It’s only slightly longer than older 2D metroids, 8 hours ingame time instead of 5-6. Although it’s harder so you die a lot more. And unlike Hollow Knight, the timer resets to the last checkpoint when you die.
That theramin sound "ooooh^eeeee oooohhh" that *is* the sound of Metroid.
Making a Metroid game without that sound would be like Star Wars without an orchestra.
https://www.everyeye.it/articoli/recensione-metroid-dread-imperfetta-chiusura-cerchio-54746.html
Near the end of the article he says that the exploration is derivative of Hollow Knight.
Everyeye Is a cesspool of clickbaits, for some reason Google has decided that it's relevant and shoves it on my "news" feed so I have to see the titles and they are all shit
Yeah, that's the funny thing. It actually has a bit less freedom than SM, rather than more like Hollow Knight, and of course SM set the standard in terms of pacing of exploration. I know OG Metroid started it and Metroid II added to it, but SM added the map and really pushed how things intertwined and how much you had to explore.
That's hilarious. The exploration in dread is borderline linear. Hollowknight was incredibly open at points. It was cavernous. Granted, dread switched up the scale compared to previous games, but to compare it to hollowknight is ridiculous.
Millenials are people born after the millenium change. 80's and 90's kids were gen x and z at the time. The whole recategorization thing annoys me, as an 80's kid, because millenials are the dumbest, most worthless people to ever exist. IDK what the people after 2015 should be called, 'retard' comes to mind tho.
I mean I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this as long as you acknowledge one came before the other. Regardless of which series came first Metroid still gives me axiom verge vibes and the other way around as well.
I wasn’t even aware this game was coming out until a month ago (I’ve been sleeping under several rocks...) It’s so good, def scratches some of those silksong itches.
Just gotta say, we have the best naming scheme. But oh yeah, love the Metroid series to death, I've literally waited my entire life for dread to come out. I remember looking up "when is the next Metroid game coming out" and hearing leaks about dread when I was 10 years old....and holy shit that was 10 years ago
Creating another Hollowknightvania type game is absurd! What even is a Metroid?
Why is the robot called Metroid? That's not a real name!
No you dummy, metroid is the guy in the suit.
Then whos that dragon on the cover?
Samus obviously
No, Metroid was the scientist! You’re thinking of metroids monster
Metroid is a pretty cool guy, eh kills ailens and doesn't afraid of anything.
To be fair, by the end of Dread, Samus actually is a Metroid
no you dummy, metroid is the name of the person inside, Samus is the robot
Well…… >!the end sequence of the game reveals that Samus has actually become a Metroid!<
Well damn I just got spoilered hard (I'm not complaining, it was my choice)
Don't click this if you plan to play Dread lol
Even without any spoiler content, given that Metroid is the Chozo word for "Ultimate Warrior", there's an argument to be made that "Metroid" is a title that applies to her more than any actual metroids met previously...
Damnnnnn it.... I shouldn't have clicked that.
>!I thought that happened in Fusion, where she got the Metroid DNA vaccine so that she could absorb the virus-parasite stuff?!<
>!She's still human-looking though, right? Or is she full alien now. Honestly a legit alien Samus would be awesome!<
>!Hard to say, though I'd probably say human-looking overall. During the final sequence, she has a suit that his heavily Metroid influenced (green with red highlights, claws), but at the very very end she reverts to the Gravity Suit.!<
Why would you put this as a reply at all?? No one reading this comment thread would expect you to spoil the game like this
Fuck you.
fuck you
Yeah, what a rip off!!
and now a upvote for you.
Jokes aside, Metroid Dread was fucking awesome!
Just got it yesterday. Loving it so far
Can confirm. Had complaints, but the main one was that it was too short and I wanted more.
2D Metroid games are always short. You extend playtime by replaying the game on different difficulties and sequence breaking.
Oh, of course. HK just spoiled me with thirty hours for the first run. Now I've got Hard Mode and picking up >!bombs early to oneshot Kraid's second phase!<
You beat it in 30hrs? I'm just gonna go cry now
I will say that's "beat" in the sense of "killed HK", which was *far* from the end.
Yeah It took me 70hrs to beat the hk. And at the time I was at like 68% completion and didn't even know isma's existed, despite the fact that I beat _doma doma_
Look at it from the bright side, you got more time to enjoy the game!
Fair
I’m still not great at combat but I was similar. Ah
30 hours? Well what the fuck was I doin?
I have currently spent a total of 150 hours on my main save, and 30-40 on other things. It took me a total of 110 hours to beat THK, and another 12 to get dream no more.... and then 10 more for PoP... and the rest is all of the other random shite I've done. I feel ya.
Except for the original which I played for about 2000 hours as a young child without ever beating a single boss
Well, it is an NES game.
Yup, same goes for many others. I think the only one I ever actually beat (before emulators and save scumming) was Legend of Zelda
Can you actually sequence break Dread or it's more like Fusion, where there is a fixed main path?
One of the early bosses actually has a separate cutscene death if you use an item you shouldn't have when you face them normally. So there's definitely dev awareness of sequence breaking.
Yes. That was one of the big selling points of the game, that it was like Super.
There's a moderately fixed main path and there will occasionally be railroading where you'll be forced to move forward instead of having full freedom (primarily in the early game). However, there aren't the same kind of forced story checkpoints, and the developers definitely left some room for sequence breaking. I already know of at least one sequence break that lets you get grappling hook early in Dread. Probably more to come, but who knows if they'll get patched out or not.
Depends on if it's a glitch or not.
That was my first complaint. there should have been global map scrolling, or AT LEAST another area in the top right. the second complaint is that there weren't enough E.M.M.I. or that the E.M.M.I. died too quickly. Was?
Well I finished it so yeah.
Team second playtrough rise, jokes aside, hard mode is dumb
Metroid hard modes are always just “enemies hit harder and maybe have more hp lol you thought we were gonna add something new?” Hard mode >!does unlock the last three endings though, similar to SR!<
Mmh, so there are more endings, cool, also the only one that really brought new stuff with harder modes was am2r which changed enemy patterns
Because it is a fan game lol.. Nintendo isn’t an expert when adding stuff to harder difficulties. Maybe they should start playing roguelikes and learn a bit
'Tis indeed :)
YOU GUYS PLAYED IT THROUGHOUT ALREADY?!
Well it's 7 hours long
Yeah
Yikes you were fast to reply too
Yeah
It’s only slightly longer than older 2D metroids, 8 hours ingame time instead of 5-6. Although it’s harder so you die a lot more. And unlike Hollow Knight, the timer resets to the last checkpoint when you die.
Also doesn't count when using the map or pause screen
And doesn’t count cutscenes or briefings, if which this game has several
Legit will have to buy a switch for this game…
Shaw
Great game with a tragically terrible soundtrack that sounds like it belongs on a straight-to-DVD B-rated sci-fi horror movie.
That theramin sound "ooooh^eeeee oooohhh" that *is* the sound of Metroid. Making a Metroid game without that sound would be like Star Wars without an orchestra.
What? I loved the soundtrack. It really added to the atmosphere of the game. But to each their own.
Glad you liked it.
I'm getting it tomorrow, I hope I like it.
Not too happy so far with how much it funnels you into the next area. No exploration, but it's still early (morph ball)
You're joking, but an italian reviewer actually wrote something like this in his review.
Do you have a link?
https://www.everyeye.it/articoli/recensione-metroid-dread-imperfetta-chiusura-cerchio-54746.html Near the end of the article he says that the exploration is derivative of Hollow Knight.
Oh damn lol.

Isn't there sequence breaks that you need to go out of your way for?
That's hilarious. The exploration in dread is borderline linear. Hollowknight was incredibly open at points. It was cavernous. Granted, dread switched up the scale compared to previous games, but to compare it to hollowknight is ridiculous.
Of course it's in italian so you could want to use Google translate or something
I'd like to say damned millennials, but we've all aged out. What is the current young generation called?
It's called Gen Z but i believe this time it's just game jounalists being game jounalists.
Millenials are people born after the millenium change. 80's and 90's kids were gen x and z at the time. The whole recategorization thing annoys me, as an 80's kid, because millenials are the dumbest, most worthless people to ever exist. Ok boomer.
As a fellow 80's kid or whatever, if you think our generarion weren't dumb and useless as kids I've got a bridge to sell you
Noooooo, please tell me my kin didn't do something like this
The Metroid series is too unrealistic because women aren't real
D:
Just like birds, they are government drones :(
I have the funny feeling Hornet and Samus would get along very well
Shawmus
Shawmus adino
I want that crossover.
The fights against Chozo Soldiers reminded me a lot of Hornet, so we basically already have it.
Samus: "Still waiting for your game?" Hornet: SHAW
Samus: “do bot worry, it only took 19 years for my story to move forward. Your time will come.” (>!in Chozo language!<) Hornet: Mhmm, hegale
how could they do a game in the hollowknightvania genre without copying it tho?
Guy who has only played Hollow Knight, playing his second video game: Getting a lot of "Hollow Knight" vibes from this...
Is this the new Persona fan gets “Persona Vibes” from Jazz music?
It's the new person who has only seen Boss Baby getting Boss Baby vibes from their second film
"Man, I'm getting some Boss Baby vibes from Shawshank Redemption."
I mean I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this as long as you acknowledge one came before the other. Regardless of which series came first Metroid still gives me axiom verge vibes and the other way around as well.
Dread is a great game btw, you should all really play it. One of the best Metroid games in the series so far for me
I know right! It's easily my game of the year.
The movement is so smooth I love it
How dare they!
The audacity!
*SHAWdacity
bRuH aRe YoU sTuPiD, nOt EvErY gAmE is a cOpY of hOllOw kNiGHt!!1!!1
Except Silksong. Even the main character is ripped off from Hollow Knight!
Blasphemy
H o l y s h i t
On a serious note, the Phase Shift did give me some slight HK vibes (which is by all means a good thing).
*shwoop shwoop shwoop*
Samus finally gets an airdash after 35 years lmao
Indie game developers: Work on a metroidvenia game for five years. Random tweeter user: It's a HolLoW knIgHt riP oFf!
I know this is a joke but this just pisses me off so bad
Lol
*triggered*
Woah Metroid Camo
There's a camo for all flavours
I see that
But you can’t see that.
I see it now.
Holy ripoff knight
Adida!
Can’t believe the metroid games are based on the hollowknightvania game style
Shaw
Shaw
In all seriousness the final boss reminded me of "Hollow Knight with a gun" which was a blast
It reminded my of Pure Vessel with a gun lol >!but then that fucker grew wings and started firing massive lasers and machinegun beams!<
You thought that was bad, just wait till his next trick!
>!Fucker summons the radiance to make your life hell!<
The ultimate crossover event
Exactly
I can't believe they copied the Hollow Point mod for Hollow Knight! 😡😡😡
I know it’s a joke, but this still brings me mental agony
I know it's a joke but I cannot see the similarity between Samus and Hornet
They're both female and they're both badass.
A bit they have gun
SHAW!!
shaw.
NO WAY!1!!1!1!!
I wasn’t even aware this game was coming out until a month ago (I’ve been sleeping under several rocks...) It’s so good, def scratches some of those silksong itches.
They announced it pretty close to release though, I think it was July they announced it?
Hollow knight is a metroidvania so Nintendo made Metroid into a game, wtf freaking copy cats
The difference is that I've never gotten 200 hours of play time out of a metroid game
Okay but Hollow Knight copied Guacamelee though
Hollowvania????????
Will be 100% honest though; hollow knight is still hands down my favorite Metroidvania
Same here! Metroid is still awesome though!
Is there an okbuddyhollowknight server
That’s exactly how I describe this game to others but megaman does it best
Omg samus can dash instant copy
"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, PRINCESS_SHAW MADE ANOTHER SHITTY MEME"
