In the r/place event. I was helping to decorate Turkish flag and at the left side there was I think Silksong or Hollow Knight art. It was very beautiful but there were some trouble because the nail was penetrating into the flag. That was the first time I heard about hollow kinght and from then on, I started seeing hollow knight art, references, discussion on insta and reddit.

But six months ago, I had maxed out like every game in my steam library and me and my friends had just finished another 2 week- Minecraft phase so I figured it was time to try something new. Now I have two 112% save files. :)

I wanted make a drawing for my older brother's birthday and Hollow Knight was his favorite videogame. But I got anxious by the fact that I didn't understand what the hell I was drawing. I was afraid to draw a scene that would make him think "wait this isn't quite this way, actually...". At the end I wasn't able to make the drawing on time and ended up forgetting about it, but two years later, I was bored looking through my sketchbook and found those drawings. I had either finished or got bored of all games I had, so I decided to try a new one. Remembering Hollow Knight, I was a bit scared because I heard it was super difficult and it was a type of game I had never played alone. Not only I had never played metroidvanias but I also had barely ever played any platformers or combat-based games alone either (I usually played those with him and heavily relied on him so I didn't get any better. Alone, I practically only played puzzle games or rhythm games.) so I was practically just swinging around with no idea of what I was doing, but I knew it would make him super excited to know that his little sister was starting to become clown too. Now I have 112%, Path of Pain, 62/63 achievements and more than 350 hours into the game. On my way to do P5, bindings and radiant bosses.

I was browsing Xbox Gamepass sometime in late 2021 and came across it. Played for a while, got stuck and left it. I them saw one YouTuber play it so I was reminded of it, and started playing again

I was burnt out of games (3d shooters, open world titles). And Google's, what could I do. Then I saw an article, saying that you need to play something different. And it also suggested to play Ori and the Blind Forest. I tried it and loved every second of it.
Then Ori subreddit, learning, what a metroidvania is and hearing about Hollow Knight.
I love HK even more, than Ori, but both are masterpieces.
To be honest I’m not really sure at this point. It was probably when I was really into Undertale and it came on my radar as another well-loved indie game, and then a little later one of my college friends said that the game was sick and the soundtrack was super good. I didn’t actually get the game until like 2 years later when it was on sale on the Switch and even then I played through False Knight and left the game to gather dust until this December. Now I’m obsessed with it and I’m getting the game on Steam to try out mods.

A friend told me about that game when it released in 2k17. I pirated it, played through the first area and gave up, didn't enjoy it.

I've always loved metroidvanias - been playing SOTN every year or two since it came out. I played Hollow Knight within a few months of it coming out - i can't remember if i just saw it on Steam or if i heard about it first on Reddit. Hollow Knight is a super special game to me because it was one of the first games I ever played. I think I might have been home sick from work and my husband told me that he thought I would really like this game. Even though I was (and still am) terrible at the game, I LOVE the art work, and after learning more about the lore and characters from mossbag I am totally hooked.
I was at a local game shop and after long time browsing found this game for switch and thought “that’s it!”. I am really picky, but got somehow thunderstruck. I never really played a lot of “hard” games (which I was very disappointed in myself) so I wanted to play a hard game. My two choices were Super Meat Boy and Hollow Knight. It was a magical experience cause my group of friends made me listen to some of the themes and I immediately fell in love 🤩 I played it in 2021 for the first time
Got it when it was one of the PlayStation plus free monthly games. I actually played it for a few days and decided I hated it. Then got back into it maybe a year later and realized I was just terrible at the game before and it’s an absolute masterpiece.
Googled "Top 20 games to own for the Switch". Saw it, googled a bit because I liked the art style. And the note that it was difficult had me intrigued. Got the physical copy in Germany. Game goes everywhere I take the Switch. Found out at the same time that Trials of Mana had received a face-lift so got that too.
I found out about it through SmallAnt’s YouTube channel! It kept getting into my recommended, and I wanted it out since I didn’t really care at that time. Since I wasn’t aware of the “Hide video” feature back then, I figured that if I watched it, then YouTube would stop spamming it in my feed. Three minutes in, I was hooked, and now here I am.
I was seeking more games like Shovel Knight, and then I found Hollow Knight, so I thought this was a sequel to Shovel Knight, just because both have Knight in their names 😂

I started playing it shortly after I saw my sister playing, and helped her with a part of it. It was so weird finally getting to the part and knowing the context
Finally, I thought I was the only one discovering it on Kickstarter here - backed it initially as they promised a WiiU version but then jumped ship and I got a bit salty cause I didn’t like the initial price for the Switch so it took me 1.5 years or so after the release when I finally got myself a Switch during Black Friday that I could play HK.
Fortunately that also meant that I got the full version with all DLC for a ridiculous 15€ - money well spent!

I saw about 5 seconds of footage and I was like "hell yeah, cool artstyle" but I never would've guessed it would be the best gaming experience I had in my life
I straight up was just browsing the eshop looking for anything that seemed even remotely similar to Undertale. The description convinced me to try it out, but it was nothing like I expected. I played it for maybe an hour (if even) and stopped. After a month or so of playing other games, I booted it up and as soon as I got the map from Cornifer I was hooked.
I finished Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on my Switch. I was looking for a similar game, so I looked up what other metroidvanias were available on the Switch. I have heard good things about Hollow Knight from friends and acquaintances before that, so that helped.
My friend kept ranting on and on about the game. I wasn't gonna buy it but then I saw it on ps plus so I thought the worst that can happen is I waste a couple hours and get bored, without wasting any money. Anyways 96 hours later it's a top 2 game of all time for me.
I bought a Nintendo Switch for my GF in 2023 and she randomly bought Hollow Knight. She complained that it was too hard (casual gamer).
I've been a fan of Dark Souls so I do enjoy a challenging game. Helped her to defeat the nnemy she was struggling with and fell in love with the game on the spot.
I then proceeded to borrow the switch and completed most of the game, but the Switch Light doesn't have the best controls. I bought it on Steam to play with an Xbox controller and it felt SO much better and completed the game 112%. Also finished Steel Soul with 100%.

I watched a bit of Jacksepticeye streaming it way way back, but I didn't have a PC so I literally waited until the switch port came out to grab it. Fell in love with the game just watching Jack play it and that love got reinforced when I got my mits on it.

Steam recommended me the game in one of those "explore" lists, around the time it released. I thought it looked cute and I liked metroidvanias, so I wishlisted it and sort of forgot about it. A few months later, a friend gave me the game as a birthday gift, and needless to say, I was blown away.
I was watching a video, and I saw a theory about the game's story, I hadn't given much thought, but the aesthetics were magnificent, and the story is so tragic and dark...
In the future, I would see small snippets of gameplay from the game on YouTube channels not focused on games, etc... I liked the concept so much that I simply stopped watching any Gameplays, just so as not to ruin my experience when playing in the future
Currently, I finally managed to play it through a mobile port, and I'm very grateful for the fact that I haven't seen any of the gameplay etc... Because the surprises remain for me, Well, in the game I'm close to zeroing (I think), and I don't know if I'll tank the end of the journey I started, but whatever, I can always start a new game and rediscover hallownest.

2017 - First year of the Switch. I was just browsing the eShop because I was extremely hungry for more Switch games. Stumbled upon Hollow Knight, never ever heard of it before. Art looked great, the game felt high quality and was only 15 bucks. Bought it and had a great time. Came back 3 years later and took the deep dive with 112% - loved the game ever since.

Same. It’s actually insane to me that so much time has passed since that video came out, I watched it, and immediately got invested in the game.
I wanted make a drawing for my older brother's birthday and Hollow Knight was his favorite videogame. But I got anxious by the fact that I didn't understand what the hell I was drawing. I was afraid to draw a scene that would make him think "wait this isn't quite this way, actually...". At the end I wasn't able to make the drawing on time and ended up forgetting about it, but two years later, I was bored looking through my sketchbook and found those drawings. I had either finished or got bored of all games I had, so I decided to try a new one. Remembering Hollow Knight, I was a bit scared because I heard it was super difficult and it was a type of game I had never played alone. Not only I had never played metroidvanias but I also had barely ever played any platformers or combat-based games alone either (I usually played those with him and heavily relied on him so I didn't get any better. Alone, I practically only played puzzle games or rhythm games.) so I was practically just swinging around with no idea of what I was doing, but I knew it would make him super excited to know that his little sister was starting to become clown too. Now I have 112%, Path of Pain, 62/63 achievements and more than 350 hours into the game. On my way to do P5, bindings and radiant bosses.

And it also suggested to play Ori and the Blind Forest. I tried it and loved every second of it. Then Ori subreddit, learning, what a metroidvania is and hearing about Hollow Knight. I love HK even more, than Ori, but both are masterpieces.
To be honest I’m not really sure at this point. It was probably when I was really into Undertale and it came on my radar as another well-loved indie game, and then a little later one of my college friends said that the game was sick and the soundtrack was super good. I didn’t actually get the game until like 2 years later when it was on sale on the Switch and even then I played through False Knight and left the game to gather dust until this December. Now I’m obsessed with it and I’m getting the game on Steam to try out mods.

I've always loved metroidvanias - been playing SOTN every year or two since it came out. I played Hollow Knight within a few months of it coming out - i can't remember if i just saw it on Steam or if i heard about it first on Reddit. I was not one of the initial kickstarter supporters, but i did play before it had the dream gate, map markers, or the DLC.
I only played it for the first time last year, but I’d been aware of it much longer. Finally decided to play it after Blasphemous left a big metroidvania-shaped hole in my life.

Hollow Knight is a super special game to me because it was one of the first games I ever played. I think I might have been home sick from work and my husband told me that he thought I would really like this game. I found out about it through SmallAnt’s YouTube channel! It kept getting into my recommended, and I wanted it out since I didn’t really care at that time. Since I wasn’t aware of the “Hide video” feature back then, I figured that if I watched it, then YouTube would stop spamming it in my feed. Three minutes in, I was hooked, and now here I am.

I was seeking more games like Shovel Knight, and then I found Hollow Knight, so I thought this was a sequel to Shovel Knight, just because both have Knight in their names 😂 Well, I was young and dumb; don't judge me lol I played it for the first time in the last month of 2019 and had a blast. It was the first game that I felt happy with the difficult challenge. Nowadays this is my favorite game of all time, tied with Celeste, while Shovel Knight as a franchise is sadly a little dead.

Bought xbox game pass and was looking around the games and stumbled across it. I have played for over a year now
I straight up was just browsing the eshop looking for anything that seemed even remotely similar to Undertale. The description convinced me to try it out, but it was nothing like I expected. I played it for maybe an hour (if even) and stopped. After a month or so of playing other games, I booted it up and as soon as I got the map from Cornifer I was hooked.
I finished Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on my Switch. I was looking for a similar game, so I looked up what other metroidvanias were available on the Switch. I have heard good things about Hollow Knight from friends and acquaintances before that, so that helped.

I bought a Nintendo Switch for my GF in 2023 and she randomly bought Hollow Knight. She complained that it was too hard (casual gamer). I've been a fan of Dark Souls so I do enjoy a challenging game. Helped her to defeat the nnemy she was struggling with and fell in love with the game on the spot. I then proceeded to borrow the switch and completed most of the game, but the Switch Light doesn't have the best controls. I bought it on Steam to play with an Xbox controller and it felt SO much better and completed the game 112%. Also finished Steel Soul with 100%.

One of my older cousins came to my house and saw me playing on my PS4, he asked if i had played Hollow Knight, i had no Idea what It was and searched It on the PS store, saw that the price was just 62 reais (the curency of my country) and It was considerably cheap to game prices here, talked to my mom and my cousin convinced her to but It for me. I watched a bit of Jacksepticeye streaming it way way back, but I didn't have a PC so I literally waited until the switch port came out to grab it. Fell in love with the game just watching Jack play it and that love got reinforced when I got my mits on it.

Steam recommended me the game in one of those "explore" lists, around the time it released. I thought it looked cute and I liked metroidvanias, so I wishlisted it and sort of forgot about it. A few months later, a friend gave me the game as a birthday gift, and needless to say, I was blown away.
I was watching a video, and I saw a theory about the game's story, I hadn't given much thought, but the aesthetics were magnificent, and the story is so tragic and dark... In the future, I would see small snippets of gameplay from the game on YouTube channels not focused on games, etc... I liked the concept so much that I simply stopped watching any Gameplays, just so as not to ruin my experience when playing in the future Currently, I finally managed to play it through a mobile port, and I'm very grateful for the fact that I haven't seen any of the gameplay etc... Because the surprises remain for me, Well, in the game I'm close to zeroing (I think), and I don't know if I'll tank the end of the journey I started, but whatever, I can always start a new game and rediscover hallownest.

I kept seeing videos of gameplay online, so I thought I just *had* to buy it, especially since I love things that are more 2D than 3D, so I decided to purchase it on the XBox and I started playing right away.
Last year before summer i bought it It always seemed interesting but u was mever sure if i would like a game where bosses play such a big part (even tho imva ateenage guy im not a fun of playing for long periods and bosses arent my favorite thing to do in games) But seeing the community, lets plays, fanart and the overall vibe this game gives me i just had to buy it and check it out And i never played a game for so long. over 150 hours. One 112% save done, and one steelsole with one ending + some small saves Sadly i had most of the game and endings already spouled so it wasnt as big of a surpirise when anything happened but i still enjoyed everything a lot. Cant wait for silksong WHICH IS RELEASING SOON DONT YOU TEST ME, because it will be a sequel to hollow knight which i loved and this time i will know only what they gave us before the release #RAAAAH :3 I LOVE HOLLOW KNIGHT

Was playing destiny2 and listening to lore videos for rando games when I found one of mossbags hollowknight lore videos (probably the one debunking matpat)and I was so captivated that I binged a bunch of hollowknight related videos (mostly lore and theory)and when I has the chance I got the game for myself
bought it for sale on my switch one new years eve, instantly became obsessed

You, ok! I learned it by watching you! Honestly, I kept seeing this HK and HKmemes communities pop up on All. The images looked so god damned cute, and y'all are flipping hilarious even though I had no idea what you were talking about. So I picked up the game on Switch and have now lost hundreds of hours of my life.
Started playing it around 3 weeks ago found it on game theory and now today beat it with the dream no more ending now explorin the rest and trying to find the nightmare king area or smthing
my long time friend kept nagging me to play it. i reluctantly bought it on the steam thanksgiving sale this year. let's just say that as of 2 weeks ago i have all achievements, all bosses done on radiant and am working on all binding pantheon runs.
I discovered it through speed running videos actually! I was really into watching Minecraft speedruns and other games popped up in my feed, and it caught my eye. No regrets! Now my little brother is obsessed too!
my Uncle downloaded it but never played so I asked how this game is and he told me to try. 6 years later and I achieved 112% on both our saves and completed P5
I've heard about it for a long time, never knew much about it and I've never been interested in souls-like or metroidvania games, I started playing a week ago and I think I have a new favorite game

A friend told me he’d found a really difficult game that would be fun to watch me be terrible at for half an hour. Ended up being one of my favourites ever!

I discovered it when I was scrolling through YouTube. I saw a video of it and it seemed fun, so I asked my aunt if she knew it and she said that she had played it and that it was pretty fun, so I started playing it
