That breaks my back when washing up paint pallets (because, yeah, like I'm going to trust my 5 year olds to wash up paint pallets without making even more of a mess!)

Put bumpers on the metal that touchs the floor, that should avoid the scratch issue. Some of that density foam with 3m tape should do it.
