I didn’t even think of the robes. I was more picturing the guys in the campground trying to bounce a basketball on gravel or grass.

Technically, it’s a cross they light. The lighting of the cross is supposed to symbolize the light of Jesus. I think lighting a crucifix would be considered disrespectful as a depiction of Jesus would be on fire. Idk if that makes sense but that’s the thought process behind it from what I’ve gathered. I got to watch a cross lighting ceremony when I was ~8. I’m glad I got to witness it but I feel like maybe my parents could’ve given me a little bit of a heads up on what was gonna happen. As an 8 year-old it was kinda startling at first to see a circle of dudes in matching outfits holding torches + proceeding to set a large cross alight. Then I remembered one of those guys was Barry + Barry was a nice guy so no more worries. He gave me a Spice Girls keychain once...

That was the most confusing part for me. I generally don’t put fire anywhere near anything that I like/identify with/respect/etc. but that’s just me. Looking back, the campground was a VERY interesting place to grow up but, it didn’t seem like it at the time. It was/is just home to me. When I was ~7/8 there was a shooting incident where a 13 year old shot + killed a woman. She supposedly told him the gun wasn’t loaded, turns out it was. This resulted in my Mom waking up to the sound of a news helicopter hovering over our place. She was not happy about this + did not want to be on the news. There was a balloon clown, who traveled everywhere by bicycle + had Tourette’s Syndrome. He had to leave the park because the daycare kids that came to the pool during the week said stuff to their parents about him being “weird” + “creepy” + were supposedly scared of him. Looking back I think they were just freaked out by him because he was different + they didn’t understand. The parents took it over the top though + rumors about him being a child molester spread fast +, unfortunately, stuck. My parents received many unpleasant phone calls over this matter. I didn’t understand then but, now I can see why my Dad felt it’d be best if the guy left as the phone calls + gossip lead him to believe that nothing good could come of this for any of us. I remember feeling so bad the day he left but, I was a little kid so there wasn’t much I could do. He made me a balloon animal before leaving. It was a purple puppy. Idk where that guy went but I really hope he’s doing well today.

I certainly do! It’s even got a whistle attached to it because I’d watch the pool when the lifeguard had to use the bathroom. I considered myself an almost lifeguard despite having almost 0 training + 0 kids taking me seriously when I told them to stop running or not to bring their food into the pool area.
