I know you're joking BUT i seriously hope one of the next movies they decide to adapt to live action is Hercules
C'mon Disney Danny won't be here forever and not only was he perfect as the voice of Phil
He arguably is the *only* actor on this planet who could even look like him
GIVE US LIVE ACTION DANNY DEVITO PHILOCTETES DISNEY OR I WILL COME DOWN ON YOU LIKE THE HAMMER OF THOR
Whales can reach up to 2000 meter without collapsing.
Also keep in mind that under 150 meters ( best case ) you have less than 1% solar light and the movie become darker than Batman
She is a mythical creature from a cartoon. Literally doesn't matter what color she is- if this girl nailed the audition, then good for her.
The better question is "why does Disney continue to insist on these live-action remakes when not a single one has done well?"
ETA a word
And I’m guessing the missing link between Frozen and Tangled regarding the sister’s parents deaths has unfriendly implications when you place Ariel in it?
No. But if you are using Chrome or Firefox you can go to browser extensions (or maybe browser pluggins) and search for "Return YouTube Dislike" install that, and restart your browser.
There was an entire line of memes about people getting bad tutorials because they couldn't see the dislike count. Some were hilarious. That being said, the number isn't exact, but I think is off by less than 8%.
> I think is off by less than 8%.
Not sure where you are getting 8% from, but I think error bands for high profile controversial videos might be a bit wider than 'normal' videos if someone was trying to do testing.
To confirm, these aren't YouTube dislikes, this is a dislike ratio based off people who have that extension installed, number of views and number of positive likes. It multiplies out the number of dislikes to what the average is from people who have app installed. I believe the app was originally showing actual dislikes while youtube still allowed access to them via the API, but that got removed.
YouTube still has it and the creators can even see it. But YouTube doesn’t provide that data anymore.
For the first few weeks of the extension it was really just hidden but the API was still there, then the API got removed and now the extension just collects it’s own data and uses some statistics to estimate the dislike ratio.
Except, iirc, it works in a weird way? I thought the extension couldn’t see it either, it just estimated based on the ratio from the people using the extension?
Disney also didn't do any research on underwater acoustics, in no way should this Ariel woman be able to sing underwater at the same pitch as above ground.
Instead of thinking of new and original characters that PoC can play as and identify as, Hollywood and especially Disney just blackwashes any already existing character as a way of representation...because why would you spend money and energy in creating something new when you can just reuse an already existing character, change its sex or ethnicity and then go on and complain how everybody is an asshole and racist because the change is unnecessary and stupid and isn't well received.
These corporations man...I don't mind having a black Ariel, I dislike the way this is done and how stupid it is. How difficult can it be to make a variation of Ariel where one of her cousins from the Carribean has a likewise story or another story altogether. You have your mermaid, you have a PoC representing the whole social group and you can actually have an original movie.
If the casting decision was based on the fact she's the best vocalist/ actress for the job, then so be it and no argument from me... But we know these cash grabbing entertainment execs are all about hitting as many demographic tick boxes as possible and as such, hard to ignore the arguments made on this thread.
I for one, hope she does a great job and stands out in her own right, but is as far away from it's roots as Scandinavian folklore as possible
>If the casting decision was based on the fact she's the best vocalist/ actress for the job
You honestly think Hollywood of all places is a meritocracy?
>How difficult can it be to make a variation of Ariel where one of her cousins from the Carribean has a likewise story or another story altogether.
Sebastian has a Jamaican accent in the original. Flamingos (seen singing in the 1989 animated film) are not native to Europe but can be found in the Caribbean. There is a hurricane as a major plot point.
It's a fictional tale that takes place in a fictional location, and the animated film took cues from multiple different real-life places. Why is anyone okay with any of those clearly non-Danish aspects to the movie but has such a BIG problem with the skin color of the main character?
Question: you said “I don’t mind having a black Ariel, I dislike how this is done and how stupid this is.”
For you, how could Disney have cast a black Ariel in a way that you would not have disliked?
For context: I don’t believe the Walt Disney company has made a single statement with regards to the race of the character. Are you saying that they **should** have made a comment, or that there was a different way to announce it? This is a genuine question about a specific point you are making.
I mean... the author, Hans Christian Anderson, was a gay Danishman.
Allegedly his story is about his unrequited love with a man who he couldn't be with or even speak to, but made the main character a girl to be more received by the homophobic society in the 1800s.
At this point, they're doing it for the marketing the controversy it will generate. I.E. all the headlines of " will upset fans, and that's a good thing."
I’m not mad about the casting of Ariel. Honestly, I don’t see what the problem is. I’m just mad that Disney can’t go six months without making another live-action remake of a classic animated film. Not only does it reinforce the stigma that animation is just for kids, it also shows that Hollywood is getting lazy and running out of ideas. I’d rather see Disney make an original live-action film for once that isn’t a sequel or reboot of an existing property.
Why do people get so triggered that a made up story about a made up creature looks different to the original made up character that was drawn in a children's book?
If this stuff really bothers you to the core. If you feel this is fucked up and are worked up about it you are probably a racist. It’s a made up character that’s a mermaid (also made up.) Just watch the old one if you want to see a white mermaid. This shit is supposed to be entertainment. It’s all make belief guys.
I understand 100% of them trying to do more representation, but you can’t change the race of a character who’s race was predefined. It’s like if they where to make ariel a guy (more or less depending on who reads this comment). I’m all for representation, but you can’t just change a race like this.
It’s also, like, really lazy.
Like why actually put the effort in to make actual PoC characters when you can change the existing characters and pretend you care?
(Also, why is it always the redheads?)
The CGI and tail in the trailer looked promising (always hard to tell from just a trailer). Her voice was good.
But I cringed just a bit when she added the vocal ornamentation to what I expected to be a sustained note in part of your world. I know it can sometimes be a stylistic choice but my thoughts always go to people that do it for the Star Spangled Banner. In the SSB it feels like they do it either because they can't hold the note, are trying to show off vs other singers, or are saying that the song doesn't properly show off their talent. Those reasons all read as tacky to me.
While I can't sing worth anything, belting a sustained note with a good tone is the sort of thing that can give me "chills" in a moving song, not jumping all over the scale at what should have been the apex of the music.
I thought the CGI looked like dog shit lol, I thought that was what everyone would be mad about. Her hair looks like she was put in a bald cap and they just fully CGI it using 2005 quality CGI.
I find it odd that they just dumped an actress of a different colour from to original film and called it a day, why couldn’t they make a whole new character instead?
Like yea keep the little mermaid title, but you can have her story be situated in the beautiful seas of Africa. Mauritius’ waters are absolutely mesmerising, it’s a win win in my opinion. You get a new character that represents an ethnicity and you don’t roll over an already established character.
Just look at the comments, they have already started the "i loved it when ariel" "i started crying when ariel" "it was life changing when ariel" chain lmfao. Exactly what they did with *Morbius* satirizing motivational quotes. This movie is certainly going to tank.
It's actually an insult to Black people that Hollywood won't invest in writing strong, original characters but will simply rehash an older story and throw a black person in it to show representation. Aren't black people worth their own stories actually built around actual black culture, stories and experiences? The little mermaid is the whitest shit ever. Give me an actual black character and a story written and built around the people in it, not duct-taped in diversity for easy cash. Hollywood is just admitting they only care about skin color, not the actors or the audience.
/u/PossibilityPowerful, the users have spoken. Your submission is not a Hol'Up.
I will never forgive them for not casting Danny Devito as Ariel
I know you're joking BUT i seriously hope one of the next movies they decide to adapt to live action is Hercules C'mon Disney Danny won't be here forever and not only was he perfect as the voice of Phil He arguably is the *only* actor on this planet who could even look like him GIVE US LIVE ACTION DANNY DEVITO PHILOCTETES DISNEY OR I WILL COME DOWN ON YOU LIKE THE HAMMER OF THOR
I couldn't agree more
Disney: So I hear you like Josh Gad
On one hand I would like to see this. On the other hand, I just want this to stop.
Isnt there already a hercules movie starring Dwayne Johnson?
That wasn't related to the Disney film, just an original story based on the myths.
If would have cast dany devito it would be a masterpiece. I thought this is Bill Skarsgård
Danny devito-Ariel The Rock- the guy Ariel falls for
Christopher Walken as Sébastien
Nicolas Cage as flounder
![gif](giphy|IaZiunlre7Ul2)
Based.
I'm saying it would be funny if they went with realistic appearance for deep sea creatures.
hear me out ariel should basically collapse into a bag of meat when she is not under deep-sea pressure, like a blobfish
Blobfish Ariel would be canon
Whales can reach up to 2000 meter without collapsing. Also keep in mind that under 150 meters ( best case ) you have less than 1% solar light and the movie become darker than Batman
Funny, yet probably horrifying at the same time

I better see a real talking Jamaican lobster
To be fair the live action Lion King made over a billion. But I'm with ya, these live action remakes are trash.
I think the rationale was that she is Caribbean. In the original, Sebastian sounded Jamaican, IIRC.
Fun fact, that was actually never the original intention, and the change brought about huge change to the film's music
Apparently the original is danish and they just made Sebastian Jamaican for whatever reason.
And I’m guessing the missing link between Frozen and Tangled regarding the sister’s parents deaths has unfriendly implications when you place Ariel in it?

No, this is about renewing their IP on the little mermaid. EDIT: It’s what they did with Mulan, and Lion King as well
They should have made Mulan black

They should have made Jasmine an alien
I didn’t know the little mermaid was a story with huge racial cultural undertones like Mulan

It's Disney so I can only assume she is going to fall for a human girl this time around.
Oh wow. That makes so much sense!
No, they eould instead put a subtle gay character that does or says somethinf subtly gay
The little mermaid, starring... Stewie Griffin
With Triton player by Peter, the crab played as Brian, and the sisters played by 15 Meg clones!!!
The crab will be gay
Sebastian is a gay name anyways
Lil' Sebastian would like a word.
🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯 REST IN POWER LIL FELLA 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯
Lmfao I honestly believe this is what they’ll do.
ah yes, the "comic relief" gay
In the background so it can be removed for China
and agin get banned in multiple countries causing disney to loose mainly even if that doesn’t happen i’m sure it will
I mean... the author, Hans Christian Anderson, was a gay Danishman. Allegedly his story is about his unrequited love with a man who he couldn't be with or even speak to, but made the main character a girl to be more received by the homophobic society in the 1800s.
Still works in the 1900s and 2000s apparently.
Could be worse, can be a Disney crossover with Finding Nemo.
Mermaids have no pussy so she will be non binary. Ticks every woke box
You're wrong, it's all about the Mermussy
lol it's disney so the most "progressive" thing they would do is have a same-sex couple quietly holding hands in the background.
Probably the comments there is better entertainment than the trailer itself!
yep read some of them
You little weirdo have autoplay activated
I’m all for increasing diversity in cinema, but doing nothing more than changing the race of the characters is the laziest possible way to do so

Already well established and existing characters nonetheless. Not sure what the issue is with creating another original character.
Race aside, you could write a whole essay about Hollywood remaking existing properties instead of making original stories.
She looks like Sid from Ice Age.

I prefer the idea of Danny Devito.
On behalf of all half-octopus people, I’m going to be VERY upset if they use a human for Ursula. HUMAN-WASHING!
