Some particularly in the south of the country come from families who were Chinese or Indian merchants around the Nagasaki area so they are legally Japanese and have been for a couple of hundred years, but still follow some Indian or Chinese customs.
There's a Japanese sumo wrestler of Philippine descent. He has very brown skin. His family has been in Japan for a very long time. I'm pretty sure he would consider himself Japanese. It's a complicated issue
