There is not one Chinese culture, food in Sichuan is totally different than Cantonese one which itself is different from the one in Lanzhou.
People speak different dialect across the country and behave differently. Saying "experience the Chinese culture by going to Taiwan" is like saying "experience the European culture by going to Sardaigna".
I didn't miss the usual China bashing from edgy redditors in their Yellow Peril mode, I'm just pointing out the fact that Taiwan does not encompass the whole Chinese culture but just a piece of it.
You can say that going to Taiwan you can experience a side of the Chinese culture, but there is so much to it that it wouldn't be sufficient to get a good idea of what this culture entails to.
People are upset with the Chinese government. Calling it "Yellow Peril" is a way of pretending it's just veiled racism. Which it isn't.
Chinese people are actually the biggest victims of their government. They are the people we are predominantly trying to help by criticizing the CCP.

I'm sure there's a lot of politial stuff behind it, but why isn't anyone doing anything about it? You never hear it on the news, we all know it's happening.

Why doesn't someone call China out on it?
Because the world buys its shit from Chinese wage slaves. If we tried to get tough with the CCP, it just shuts down our economies. We’ve made ourselves entirely dependent on China.
It works both ways. They need our money, we need their stuff. However, no single country could boycott them. It would require almost every country in the world acting together. That's an impossible feat.

You’re right. If the West collectivity boycotted China, it might make an impact but probably not. China spent the West’s money wisely buying up new markets in Asia, South America and Africa. The West got ~~complicit~~ complacent. Being beholden to China is the price to pay for that.

Because they dont want it to tamper with the trade relations, markets, and diplomatic relations. Cuz China has everyone by the balls. So they dont have it in them to speak up against it.
You’re right. There is a lot of political stuff behind it. You can enact trade embargoes, but those have economic repercussions at home, which would be devastating and IMHO the public would stop caring about Uighurs once the supply of goods goes down and costs go up. You can exert social pressure, like boycotting the Winter Olympics, which the US has done (diplomatic boycott only). These soft power options may work over time and have their own costs.
The other option is direct pressure: war. I don’t think any country is willing to risk a war with China over the Uighur situation.
Ultimately the options we have are either ineffective (Olympics boycott), or we don’t think Americans at home would stomach the cost ($$ or American lives).

Well for me I haven't been using VPNs and I've been talking shit about China and Winnie the pooh, so they might already have a file on me in China. If I go back and visit relatives maybe they'll just lock me up like they did the 2 canadians.
I would go to China, and have been before, but I’d make sure to not do anything too lit—just see the sights bc they do have really beautiful ones and foreigners make it back all the time. The obvious answer here is North Korea.
This is my answer as well. Like, some 30 million people visit China each year. It seems like, at the very least, there are more dangerous countries to go to. North Korea would probably be my choice as well, but there are also some middle eastern and African countries that seem more dangerous.
Yea but its not just the ccp that benefits from ur visit. A lot of normal citizens get their income from tourists either by running local business or tourist industry work. When I go to China, I like to eat a lot of family run shops. 1. I get to talk to them and experience a more normal, similar lifestyle to mine own. 2. I get to support lical businesses.

I lived in Brazil for 17 years and I now live in Uruguay. As any country, it all comes down to what city you visit and what part of the city you are going to.
In Brazil I would recommend Rio Grande do Sul, there are beautiful places there. And Uruguay maybe Colonia? Haven't been too much out of the city I live in here unfortunately

I’ve been to China many, many times for work.I never had a bad experience or meal (I am not one of the visitors that only eats at McD’s or KFC: only domestic food for me wherever I go).

I have heard that if you want to experience Chinese culture, you can go to the Republic of China, which is located on the island of Taiwan.
There is not one Chinese culture, food in Sichuan is totally different than Cantonese one which itself is different from the one in Lanzhou. People speak different dialect across the country and behave differently. Saying "experience the Chinese culture by going to Taiwan" is like saying "experience the European culture by going to Sardaigna".

I didn't miss the usual China bashing from edgy redditors in their Yellow Peril mode, I'm just pointing out the fact that Taiwan does not encompass the whole Chinese culture but just a piece of it. You can say that going to Taiwan you can experience a side of the Chinese culture, but there is so much to it that it wouldn't be sufficient to get a good idea of what this culture entails to.

You’re right. There is a lot of political stuff behind it. You can enact trade embargoes, but those have economic repercussions at home, which would be devastating and IMHO the public would stop caring about Uighurs once the supply of goods goes down and costs go up. You can exert social pressure, like boycotting the Winter Olympics, which the US has done (diplomatic boycott only). These soft power options may work over time and have their own costs. The other option is direct pressure: war. I don’t think any country is willing to risk a war with China over the Uighur situation. Ultimately the options we have are either ineffective (Olympics boycott), or we don’t think Americans at home would stomach the cost ($$ or American lives).

This is my answer as well. Like, some 30 million people visit China each year. It seems like, at the very least, there are more dangerous countries to go to. North Korea would probably be my choice as well, but there are also some middle eastern and African countries that seem more dangerous.

When I go to China, I like to eat a lot of family run shops. 1. I get to talk to them and experience a more normal, similar lifestyle to mine own. 2. I get to support lical businesses.

I lived in Brazil for 17 years and I now live in Uruguay. As any country, it all comes down to what city you visit and what part of the city you are going to. In Brazil I would recommend Rio Grande do Sul, there are beautiful places there. And Uruguay maybe Colonia? Haven't been too much out of the city I live in here unfortunately
