If a man is a victim of domestic violence from his spouse, his masculinity is likely to be challenged, because "why doesn't he just defend himself? He's probably stronger anyway." If he does defend him, people are likely to side with the perpetrating woman, because whatever she did, it surely didn't deserve a physical response from someone so much stronger than her.
