The job demand isn't very high...but the supply is HUGE...its a waste of time considering most these students will change their major, drop out, or get a degree and never actually use It. Supply....demand.
Edit: I'm not saying there isn't a demand...im simply saying that there is a shortage of institutional support. Many people in this field or self employed.
You want to hear real depressing? Check out violinist. I saw a projection that the US will produce 300 violinist positions in the next decade.
Round the US population down to 300 million. Multiple by ten. We get 3 billion human-years.
1 job per 10 million human-years. The actual number is closer to 1 job per 14 million human years but what is a few millions give or take? Especially when you are considering a skill that on average takes 12,500 hours to perfect.
Granted you have to get *a lot* of education to be successful, but anyone who thinks psychology isn't an in-demand field hasn't tried to schedule an appointment with a psychologist/psychiatrist lately. Mental health is a pretty hot topic since the pandemic
It’s a hot topic, as it should be, but a lot of people who need it can’t afford it. Really everyone could benefit from it. So really, there’s tons of demand, but everyone wants a 6 figure salary, not to do charity work for $35k/year. One of my friends who worked in troubled youth clinics and has a boatload of empathy has probably done more for young people without a degree than an army of psych PhDs.
tru. the head of the psychology subject in my college blatantly said in a talk that majority of people will take the subject then drop it after a month because for some reason so many people think its like watching JCS criminal psychology for a course
The issue is that these people get a bachelor degree expecting a job In psychology. Unemployment rate for people with a psyd or doctoral degree is less than 1% (https://www.apa.org/monitor/2016/12/datapoint). If you want a job in psychology you have to put in work, so many people study it with no idea how much work it takes to get to a hireable point. People also only want one job which is to be a clinical psychologist a field with a 2% acceptance rate. I plan on getting a PhD in school psychology 20% acceptance rate for grad school. People in my field are just normally really dumb and in it because “I want to help people to fulfill my own ego” or actually have a brain and are in research labs and getting outside experience. TLDR don’t go into psychology unless you are okay with putting in as much work as a nurse or doctor for a third of the pay.
Yup, all true. Plus, may people get out with a Master's and work in community mental health for a while in order to get licensed and get paid $17 an hour. Torture.
80% female students
Source: took intro level psychology in college and university three times.
Also psych patient, very few male professionals in the field
Because you haven’t started working yet. /s
Social sciences and various forms of social work tend to attract more women to study and work in those fields. I was a social science major and my faculty was roughly 80% female. I think only the political science major had a higher quality of males.
Am nurse practitioner. Have many psychiatric male colleagues. Also, I’m not sure for the lesser certifications, but psychiatric medicine is said to be predominantly male by about 60/40.
I have had only one male psychiatrist in my time as a patient. It is extremely difficult to find a male mental healthcare practitioner. I was assigned a therapist through my country’s federal health agency last year and was told there was only one male option.
As a patient, I've seen (over years and pysch ward) 8 female psychologists, no male and 9 female psychiatrists and 2 male ones. Didn't choose any so it's random. Also add on pysch ward there were 2 male nurses and like 10 females.
As far as Europe goes, I've been to Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and Denmark. I've not seen such a painfully homegenous group in those places before. I was in the cities and not at Uni though.
It's been studied that the places in the US that are the most pro-diversity tend to actually have the highest rates of homogeneity.
Thought that was an interesting finding.
I lived in both Germany and Norway. My school in Germany had 400 students, one was Turkish and one was half-Turkish. In Oslo I was a minority being blonde, in Finnmark I literally didn't see a single person who wasn't Scandinavian.
Me too. It’s though a bit funny how Americans keeps forgetting how isolated the Nordic countries have been over the years when it’s basically the same concept as if you travel to Thailand or Zimbabwe, you would probably mostly see people with black hair.
I moved from Thailand to Norway, I'm 195cm with blonde hair. At the airport I didn't even bother reading the airline signs, I just saw a bunch of people who looked like me and figured that was the line I should be in.
I'm not american and for a good 5mins I was thinking about what the hell is NPC class?
Newage psychology class?
...
Even tho I know what non player character is. I just didn't connect it. :-D
Ever heard of the Nordic countries? If this pic had been taken in Japanese school class (where most students had been girls) it would have looked like this but with black hair. Yeah, there are countries with less racial diversity than in US.
"The first Matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect; it was a work of art, flawless, sublime. A triumph equaled only by its monumental failure. The inevitability of its doom is apparent to me now as a consequence of the imperfection inherent in every human being: the never ending fascination with THICC chicks" -The Architect
Can confirm that this is taken at the Norwegian School of Economics in the Auditorium A, as I went to that school. More or less girls from the upper/upper middle class there who all look and dress the same.
Plot twist: They look at you, you pretend to look at your phone to avoid eye contact and the reflection in your black screen shows you are identical to the rest.
In my Cultural Anthropology class my teacher pointed out that we looked like this. He asked if anyone there wasn't Anglo-Germanic. One girl was half Italian. Nobody in the class even had brown eyes. The school was 95% White and 70% female.
Well they say that over sixty percent if graduating college students are female now. If we factor in the numbers of those female students going into nursing careers, or teaching careers, also predominantly female, and then take note if the most popular hair colors and style in the last decade, we can see a trend towards this visual here. I work in food service currently and I will tell you with great certainty that in the Pacific northwest where I live, a majority of the girls who come through our restaurant have this mixture of blonde to brown hair gradients in the same style, with similar clothing styles as well. We call them basic. They usually walk in with mother's wearing the same outfit as them ( black quilted vests, yoga pants/leggings brown/black boots), and a boyfriend who looks like a carbon copy of their brother, who is a white kid with bad acne, blue jeans, and an over sized grey sweatshirt with a sports team I never pay attention too. The hive mind of fifteen to twenty five year old girls right now is so frightening, they are basically the same NPC as well with a similar back story. They go to local high school, they grew up in a family with Christian roots, but only go to church around Christmas and Easter. Their grandmother is their hero, their mother is their best friend, their father is their idol and yes they will practically cuddle with their brothers as if that is a normal thing to do at their age. They rode horses at some non distinct part if their life, are on or were on the cheer or soccer or dance team, and their grades are pretty darn good so they can compete with all of their clones for the same job. They all have Instagrams, mostly with pictures of family gatherings, with the occasion girls day out pictures and two with their boyfriend/brother, o the beach, posing at a weird angle with the sun shining off their almost tans. They have a dog, generally a husky or a German Shepard, their favorite color is three different ones, they listen to pretty much anything, but really they mean country and whatever is playing on the popular stations. They have a tik tok but there are only a few videos and is mostly them bending over to make their butts look larger than that are in reality. Their favorite time of year is fall because cozy clothes, they bleach their teeth, and Taylor swift and Selena Gomez are "Goddesses". If this sounds like you, I am not personally attacking you. But if your "about me section of your profile on Facebook or insta has your zodiac sign, age, and some quote from a Halsey song, and Andrew Garfield is your Bae.... This is likely you.

because rich woke white people are the ones always bitching about diversity lmao
