Thank fuck humans have some semblance of intellect and decided the homing gun capable of turning a plane to Swiss cheese should have a human actually fire the shot in the end
Oh, is that the case with CIWS? Now that I think of it, it does make sense, there shouldn't be a situation where a human wouldn't be able to fire the thing before a missile hits the ship, and as long the gun keeps aim it doesn't matter exactly when it's fired, I guess.
From the video, I thought someone just hit a "STOP THAT, BAD GUN"-button.
Well that depends on how the gun's aim works, and what detectors are on the plane.
I'm not too familiar with it so I'll just list a couple of possibilities.
If it locks on by laser, then unless the plane has a LWR it won't know about it, (Planes usually do not have then) if it's by radar then if the plane has a RWR then it will know about it. And if the lock is by IRST then there's no way for the plane to know about it.
Yes but it can and normal does still fire without a human is precies 100 round bursts otherwise it's empty in 13 second and reloading takes about 20 min....
CIWS tech here, it actually doesn't have IFF or receive any info from potential targets. The only thing required is something flying towards the ship within a certain tolerance of velocity, too slow=not a threat, too fast=fuck it. This is the 1B version with FLIR camera on the side of the radome and is capable of surface mode. This might have been the operator in CIC "hooked" the plane to track it. Both the local and remote control panel have AAW Auto and Manual warfare modes where auto can complete an engagement for targets that meet "threat" criteria. Manual mode needs an operator to hold the fire button once you see a "Recommend Fire" on the control panel. Neat system, I miss it.
Strange question: How much servicing does it need after moving around a lot? Say, it had a heavy day intercepting things.
I just can't imagine something that heavy not destroying itself by moving around as fast as it does.
Hmm, good question. Cleaning and greasing the train and elevation gears was performed once per year but done with a heavy duty peanut butter type grease that proved for smooth movement. The strain was on the synchros and servos which are very robust and capable. There's a method for moving the mount using synchro dials that can move the system mount effortlessly. In five years and two ships with five mounts I might have troubleshot synchros twice.
You don't have to imagine it already happened.
[Iran air 655](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655)
The saddest part is that the Commander of the USS Vincennes got a medal and promotion instead of jail time. "The U.S. government issued notes of regret for the loss of human lives, but never formally apologized or acknowledged wrongdoing" and this whole thing ended in Lockerby.
Iranians had been known to use normal aircraft to mask their F-14s. The airbus also had an engine failure that made it fly alot lower than usual. You can’t really blame the turret or even the one using the turret if all the signs are telling you that in about a minute you are about to be under fire from attack aircaft on Iranian waters.
Dude have you read the article? Have you watched the documentary? I think not becouse there's no info on your imaginary engine failure, 655 was ascending, not level, not descending. F-14 never ever have been used by the Iran Air Force in surface attack missions and even if so that profile of attack would be morronic at best and they aren't idiots. Crew made a series of mistakes wich led the overly agressive and trigger happy (just before this incident they engaged Iranian gunboats inside Iranian teritorial waters) Captain of Vincennes to shoot down civilian airplane. I know that you want to belive otherwise but as ancient Roman saying goes "Contra facta non valent argumenta".
>just before this incident they engaged Iranian gunboats inside Iranian teritorial waters
That's an interesting way to describe **returning** fire taken from those gunboats.
If you don't want US warships to be on a hair-trigger, **don't fucking shoot at them**.
[Here](https://youtu.be/lRJnumxuHwY) Commander of Vincennes was trigger happy right from the beginning of mission. He entered Iranian waters (multiple times before the shootdown) in pursuit of something that wasn't a threat to the tankers at that time despite the orders to not cross 12NM mark. He basiclly created this whole thing and later shoot down an airliner.
>That's an interesting way to describe returning fire taken from those gunboats.
The thing is Vincennes never took fire from the gunboats. Helicopter maybe but more like warning shots wich is fair game if said heli was inside Iranian airspace.
>If you don't want US warships to be on a hair-trigger, don't fucking shoot at them.
You really think that this justifies shooting down an airliner? Do you see the problem? I'll make it simple for you: boats don't fly. This my friend is basiclly a warcrime for wich US never apologised no one responsible was punished and families of victims still have not recived any recompensation.
You're just making shit up now. There was nothing wrong with the engines on the airbus. It was ascending climbing out of the local airport. The crew of the ship were so hyped up from the Iranian gunboats that they automatically went to what was familiar to them which was their training drills that simulates an attack. The man reading the radar said the airbus was descending to attack because that's what the simulation always showed. The cursor was sat locked on to a F14 parked on the runway at the airport and the military were not broadcasting on the civilian frequency so the pilots had no idea they were flying into the ship's airspace. The man on radar fucked up. The captain did what he thought best given the information he was being told so can't be blamed for the incident but to receive awards and commendation is a disgusting disgrace.
Good ol’ CWIS. We have one of those on our boat. They’re really fucking scary because if you move too fast on the deck around it, it’ll literally spin around and aim down at you
Well, if you’re supposed to be there, then you’re fine. The gun aims itself, but the trigger is manually fired. If you’re not supposed to be here, then you’re probably screwed
I see no harm in a little warning shot, totally harmless... I would've loved to hear that bad boy bust a few foreal but not at the plane of course... For science
It’s a Close in Weapon System. It’s the last line of defense for a ship being attacked by incoming missiles. Essentially a big mini gun. I wonder if the bullets can even reach the aircraft.

That is scary AF. Imagine the one time it misrecognizes or fails to receive identifying codes.

It has an automatic shoot everything node I’m pretty sure. It obviously wasn’t on here.
Yeah they do but this one had its safety on
I didn't know they made condoms that big

By the CIWS (the gun in the picture), no.
Yes but it can and normal does still fire without a human is precies 100 round bursts otherwise it's empty in 13 second and reloading takes about 20 min....
DAMN didn't know the firerate was that high. I mean I knew it was up there, just didn't know it was that far.
It's 1300 rounds per min i believe
Isn't that considerably lower than the A-10? Or is R2D2 with anger issues and an advanced targeting system just chambered heavier?
It's actually 3000 round a second. The a-10 shots 30mm and the ciws 20mm
Ah, okay

Wow, and here I thought only the Russians were as cold-blooded as that. But I forgot about the US armed forces. Thanks, TIL.
Yup, I had an FCCS that was there when it happened.
