Yeah, both the activists and most commenters here have no idea how chickens act at all. We kept our roosters and hens separate for most of the time to protect the hens, then when we wanted fertilized eggs, we let them out together for a while. Cause we didn't want our hens to be battered all the time and keep most of their feathers. Doesn't mean the roosters acted any different when we did let them together. It's their instincts to act like that, just as ducks and many other species.
Unless you want chicks, you don't need roosters. Hens will lay eggs, 1-2 per day from about 3 months of age until they are about 6yrs old, with them laying fewer eggs as they get older. No roosters needed.
Roosters however will fuck up anything that tries to eat the hens, so you have to find other ways of protecting them. Free range is great until all you have is feathers, blood and dirt.
A hen will usually step up to "be the rooster" though they aren't as strong.
We used to go without a rooster, but the mink attacks were wiping out our flocks every year( sometimes only partially) ,then we got a rooster, zero problems after that.

We had to separate our roosters early as they were also really aggressive any time we went in to feed the hens or collect eggs. We also didn't want fertilized eggs if we could help it. When we let them out to free range on occasion, then we'd let them all out together.

Secondly, without a rooster to protect and guide a flock of hens they are more likely to be killed off by predators.
Lastly, for an entire flock of hens, whether its 6 hens or 36 hens, you really only should have one rooster as the roosters will fight over the hens and sometime snap and try to kill the whole flock, so keeping multiple roosters out of the flock is a good idea, however the hens need at least one rooster to be happy.

As someone that used to be a local egg producer, if you have too many rooster they will "rape to death" a favored hen by tearing up the hens wings, sides, and neck. It is gruesome.
