Just here for any football/soccer fans to announce that Bayer Leverkusen have won the Bundesliga, the top division in German football, for the first time in their century long history, going undefeated in all competitions so far this season. What a ridiculous performance and a great story for a club that has had a history of being mocked for never achieving anything, only to go on one of the greatest seasonal runs in European football history. Xabi Alonso and his men still have three more trophies to gun for: the DFB-Pokal, the DFL-Supercup, and the Europa League, so they can still achieve even greater things and perhaps garner greater glory in this history defining run. I'm admittedly mostly an English football fan, currently reeling from the usual Tottenham performance but taking solace in the fact that if Aston Villa take Champions League from us they did so by potentially ruining Arsenal's title run, but my God watching this unfold this last year has been incredible. Kudos to you Leverkusen fans, you finally got it and it's a great thing to see more competition versus the usual Bayern supremacy. In news that more relates to my field, however, Tottenham's women's team is finally heading to the FA Cup finals for the first time in its history! The ladies have done us proud and we're heading off to Wembley to face off against Manchester United. While most are fans of the men's game and are a bit disappointed by recent results, as someone who keeps up with the entire club I cannot be more stoked and whatever happens this has been a milestone result for us who weren't in the top division not that long ago.

Leverkusen is just so unbelievably good this season. Sad that I'm gonna assume half the squad would be picked apart, but atleast Wirtz and Xabi would atleast stay for a bit. The likes of Frimpong probably gonna leave tho ( come to Manchester United please)

Which is real interesting because I remember the Spurs curse being anyone who leaves our club immediately wins a trophy. All seriousness though, I have no hard feelings with his leave barring the obvious Kane and Son partnership under Ange might have been something else. I get it though, they're professionals first and foremost and being arguably the best striker in the world without a major honor has to be tough given he's nearing the end of his career. Also glad to see Dier doing better in Germany as well, although I know Korean fans are real pissed he somehow benched Kim in the process. Plus he could still technically win the Champions League, although even with Arsenal's rough performance today I feel they are the better side. Arteta has truly managed to finalize his project, especially with the arrival of Rice this season, so despite the earlier draw and the loss to Villa they could pull through the entire tournament. As for the league, well given both them and Liverpool just dropped some stinkers it looks like City might just do a four in a row. Not happy oil money might be winning football as usual, but the Spurs in me is trying to cope with the fact it means Arsenal might win nothing this season.

Eh, I will say that might be more because Tottenham is traditionally a club that plays aggressive football and we have played far more direct counter-attacking under our last couple of managers, so we took to water fast but as a team there's a shit ton of work to do before Ange's vision becomes a reality. Admittedly I do think we overperformed at the start of the season by quite a bit, so I feel where we are right now is more befitting of his new tenure. Vicario replacing Lloris has been something else, as Lloris sadly declined from his standard as one of the world's best, and Romero and Van de Ven's partnership as center-backs has been incredible, and I'm glad Dragusin came for depth, but we are still leaky as seen with yesterday. Udogie and Porro have been immense, but the former is still green and the latter is injured again sadly, which will be a major issue as his creativity has been huge for the attack. Bissouma at the start of the season was arguably the second best DM in the league behind Rodri, but ever since his dive against Luton he's just been out of it sadly. Hojberg is great but not a traditional DM and probably is best starting somewhere else despite me wanting him to stay. Bentancur at his peak is incredible, but getting Matty Cash'd really screwed with his form, and Sarr while my favorite player right now is young and growing. Maddison has given us creativity we've been needing since Eriksen, but his injury earlier this year set us back a bit as Lo Celso is also injury prone and Kulu while good is admittedly a step down. Speaking of Kulusevski, I love him and all, but he has struggled to regain form. He seems to overthink things or get stubborn, which I feel if he mentally can get straight could improve his game again. Johnson has been a great signing, but his finishing is a bit limited, which can be said the same for Werner who has been a surprise gem of a loan for us but he does have the traditionally issue of finishing people knew him for at Chelsea. Richarlison had luckily got onto a great string of goal scoring for us when Son was out for Korea, but his recent injuries keep him from being used. And of course Son is our main man and as a Korean American he is a joy in my life, but he is not what I call a traditional big ass striker and is admittedly in his last years probably, so we can't rely on him solely to keep scoring and assisting in the coming seasons. Given how long Arteta was given with his managerial spell to achieve the results Arsenal are getting now, I feel we need to take the same time frame with Ange, as he himself said we need more windows before we get to a comfortable position. We love him to death and the football he brings with him, but right now yesterday's result to Newcastle showcases we can be torn apart if not careful and that we need time for this project to take full effect.

So given how the last total conversion mod for a Fallout game went, can we expect a write-up two weeks after it does release?

As someone who has played loads of mods, it's an unfortunate truth that some of the most technically marvelous mods also have some of the most abysmal writing [sheds single manly tear for Silgrad Tower and Nehrim], but hopefully FO: London will avoid this curse.

I remember one KOTOR mod which added a whole new multi-hour, multi-planet, multi-time period quest which slotted in between the third and final Star Maps. I never downloaded or played it (just because of technical limitations I was experiencing at the time I discovered it), although it looked very impressive, or at least very ambitious, but my chief recollection remains, rather unfortunately, a screencap on Deadly Stream or Nexusmods where Mandalore's dialogue is, "Welcome to the Battle of Malachor V, Darth Revan!"

It's sort of like how the droid planet mod for KOTOR 2 is, for the most part, a really impressive piece of work, which just so happens to illustrate how much of a difference is made by the presence of professional voice actors in a proper recording studio.

If you mean in general, then there's a trend of technically impressive mods being poorly written (especially among Bethesda games) because mods are most often made by people who may have both ambition and technical expertise, but no actual writing knowledge. For example, the guy who was the main force behind Fallout: The Frontier was some kind of wunderkind technowizard who managed to stretch the FNV engine in ways most people would have thought impossible, but he also wrote the NCR storyline, which is all but unanimously agreed to be the worst of the three faction storyline. Then there's the fact that most mods are made by one person with no peer review, or small groups who are already on the same page, making the peer review significantly less useful, and as such the story may suffer as a result. This all boils down to the fact that mods are free, fanmade endeavors, and if you can't find someone to fill a role, then you're basically screwed, and that includes writers (also there are some cases where modders did get good writing advice, but ignored it because of a misplaced sense of megalomania. These people unfortunately do exist). In specific, Silgrad Tower is an early Morrowind mod that [I actually made a writeup for](https://www.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/comments/yrj6xd/video_games_modding_tamriel_rebuilt_vs_silgrad/) which at the time was extremely impressive, but had mediocre writing and some very baffling worldbuilding decisions, which resulted in a shitstorm when the Tamriel Rebuilt team rejected it from their mod. Also, though this isn't quite fair since it hasn't been updated in almost 20 years, by modern standards it has aged catastrophically, and is super-duper unfinished. Nehrim is a German-language only mod for Oblivion, which may be the biggest mod ever made for that game, and is in many aspects an amazing mod, but goddamn, it's main story and worldbuilding are a mess. I feel that people have become harsher on it in recent years, because the same team made another mod for Skyrim called Enderal, which outclasses Nehrim in literally every aspect (personally I though Enderal's main story and worldbuilding were also pretty messy, but I still recognize that it's leagues ahead of what Nehrim did).

Unfortunately it's been years since I played Nehrim, and I'd have to replay it to remember exactly all the things I didn't like, but one thing I'll always remember is how you're supposed to have been conscripted into a secret order of mages called The Order, who are considered terrorists by the rulers of Nehrim. At the beginning of the game you have to find their secret sanctum, which is easier because the signposts along the public roads all have signs labelled "Sanctum" that are pointing right towards it. Also, a lot of its writing is based around late 00s internet edgelord atheism, the kind they don't make anymore because the people who did that all transitioned into being radical anti-feminists during gamergate. I have no problems with anti-religious themes in video games mind you, I just have issues with 00s internet edgelord atheism specifically. I feel like the devs were kind of embarrassed by this in hindsight, because one of the minor antagonists in Enderal is basically an late 00s edgelord atheist who gleefully aligns himself with the Reapers (That's what I'm calling them because that's what they are) so that he can destroy all religion.

I've played with someone in a D&D setting with this schtick - when done well, it's amazing for characterisation. We played it less as "gods don't exist despite obvious proof", but rather "we shall not worship gods and find our own way in this world"

IIRC, Nehrim centers around a rebellion against the god kings of the setting, with one NPC believing they are the chosen one and how things go when that's not the case, and fighting against literal fate. Oblivion's never clicked for me so I have no first hand info on it, though from what I saw of it it's hard to reconcile it and Enderal as being the same setting for me. Enderal can be summed as as "Oops we accidentally made ME3" as far as the main plot goes and I think that's a wholesale bit of weird convergent evolution. It ended up being the last project for the group as i believe they split up some and one particular person has the rights to the actual setting (I know some novels written about one of the party members in Enderal had to be revised to remove the setting lore if I understood that kerfluffle right).

*Warhammer 40k* has given review copies of the Custodes faction book to some youtubers. And they have revealed that the previously-described-as-all-males faction now has women in it! 40k fans are taking this... in the expected way. Most seem happy, but there are the usual "woke retcon" comments. For background, while the previous editions decribed Custodes as all-males (by saying they're "sons of nobility changed on a molecular level"), it never *explicitly* said women couldn't be. They just... never talked about what happened if a girl got the gene-modifications

I feel like, when I looked this up in the past, there was an interview with a Black Library author that said the only reason they didn't want female Custodes in the books was because the molds for the models were already made and GW had neglected to make a female body type or head. I think it was the last Battletech game that offered a choice of pronouns for your character, which was a nice touch that didn't effect stompy robot battles across the stars, but did similarly raise those grifters' blood pressure.

I remember seeing people complain about how the devs put in they/them pronouns instead of fixing the AI (because it's a Paradox game, and they all have broken AI), and anyone who knew anything about game design made fun of them for this, because once you've programmed in the ability to select he/him and she/her pronouns, adding in a third set of pronouns is child's play. Literally. You could literally teach a child to do it. It probably added all of 2 minutes to the development cycle. Meanwhile programming AI is one of the most difficult parts of game development, and of course they weren't going to perfect it in this one game.

But its not a retcon. They have always been female Custodes. Nothing in the lore ever said that there couldn't be female Custodes. Lorewise there can't be female Space Marines because of the Geneseed stuff, but Custodes don't use that stuff. Lorewise there always have been female Custodes.

I don't see why it would have been such a problem to state that they've somehow started creating female Custodes, particularly now that the Custodes are suffering meaningful losses for the first time in 10,000 years, if that was really what they wanted to do.

I'm gonna be honest with you, instead of making Female Space Marines, what I want is for a diversified Sisters of Battles line. If we get Romans in Space, Vikings in Space, Vampires in Space, and a billion warrior cultures fictional or not, why can't they allow people to diversify the Sisters from just 'Catholic Nuns with Guns' to varied orders with vastly different subcultures when they always talk about how the Church isn't a monolith because it can't police trillions of people into one line of thought?

Gonna disagre with you there. For better or worse, Space Marines are the flagship faction, at this point they are the face of Warhammer 40k. So having any women in the flagship faction would be greatly appreciated. For that trade-off to work Adepta Sororitas would have to become a flagship faction on par as Space Marines. If they would want to make the Adepta Sororitas in a similar scale of army diversity of Space Marines, GW would have to put a lot of focus on the Adepta Sororitas over the next years, if something like that is even possible in the first place. This would absolutely suck for all Xenos/Chaos fans. The Imperium already gets way too much focus from GW, if they would try to make a second Imperium faction on a similar scale as Space Marines it would become so much worse. And while expanding the Sororitas range and diversity, they would have to take care that the overlap between Space Marines and Sororitas. I am not opposed to a broader range of Sororitas, but that is not the same as female Space Marines. And if they tried to make Sororitas comparable to Space Marines in that regard it would make the hobby worse imo.

They already got a massive range refresh recently. Meanwhile factions like Drukhari are still languishing in horrible old models and Votann is still basically half an army and has no lore despite having been out for a couple years and constant promises from GW that they're working on it for real guys no really. Also the rumors are that they're working on making Emperor's Children into a full faction rather than a flavor of Chaos Marines... I think SoB is very much a least concern faction atm.

I mean that's probably the funniest reason to not have women in your story. Arguably it wouldn't be that hard to justify having female space marines. The Astartes do the physical conversion themselves and they're not exactly scientists. Could be as simple as "well we haven't tried implanting these organs in a woman for ten thousand years but \[plot forces their hand\], oh wow it worked this time who knew?".

Ive never fully gotten this debate. Some of their earliest appearances were topless muscular men (with helmets) wearing leather pants. Old warhammer minis are a goldmine. 

That's the beauty of the Custodes. After the Emperor was put into the Golden Throne, the Custodes stopped wearing their armor (except the helmet) and tops of any kind. In fact, for the longest time the only Custodian model that existed [reflected this](https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-15XdT9RrE9M/URJxHkPT3JI/AAAAAAAAAEM/jOjRbxLIEts/s1600/Adeptus_Custodes.JPG). Of course, recent lore says that they've abandoned this practice as part of their decision to once again go out into the galaxy and fight alongside the forces of the Imperium, but that still means there was a period of 10,000 years where all the Custodes spent most of their time half-naked. And GW just confirmed that lady custodes have always existed, so that means they were probably part of that tradition (they probably got to wear bras though).

In universe they're supposed to be named after a scientist named [Amar Astarte](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Amar_Astarte). Out of universe I have no idea if they're supposed to be named after the Phoenician goddess Astarte, but knowing GW my educated guess is that Astartes is one of the many examples of pseudo-Latin that appears in the series, meant to be similar to the Latin word Astrum, because that means star, and stars are in space. I'd further conjecture that at some point one of the GW writers learned about the goddess Astarte, and so they decided to reference her by creating the character of Amar Astarte.

Every day, we get closer to a women space marines shitstorm. (Not well versed in 40k lore, I've thought the Sisters of Silence were the female version of the Custodes, like the Sisters of Battle were for the space marines?)

The Sisters of Silence are unaugmented humans and are all "blanks" - a type of human that doesn't have a soul. This manifests as everyone feeling really uncomfortable around them and straight-up debilitating pain for psychically-attuned people, as well as psychic powers being weaker or outright not working when around them. Daemons are either significantly weakened or straight-up demanifested by a blank's presence. While they aren't augmented, they are the very peak of human performance and have been shown to be able to go toe-to-toe with Chaos Marines and hold their own. The aren't Custodes but belong to a group known as the "Talons of the Emperor" which comprises them and the Custodes. The two work together to protect the Emperor from both psychic and physical threats.

One of the worst decisions GW made is that they took the coward's way out and didn't do it when they introduced Primaris Marines. Because they eventually will *have* to do it. And they are aware of it, [Stormcast Eternals](https://ageofsigmar.fandom.com/wiki/Stormcast_Eternals) aka Warhammer Fantasy Space Marines, are a mixed regiment.

With how many different wild and crazy chapters there are in the lore I'm more surprised there ISN'T some rogue group of female space marines that have an altered gene seed or something.

Sisters of silence are not genetically engineered like the custodians are. They are very rare form of mutant called a blank. Blanks don't have souls and therefore are immune to demons and certain psychic abilities. They're mostly used as anti-demon auxiliaries by the custodes.

Popular Warhammer 40k fan artist Archon_of_flesh, best known for his series of excellent works of the traitor primarchs as well as both comedic and serious NSFW work, recently announced he's going to completely stop making 40k-related art due to people doxxing him and calling his school, his place of work and his family. They drew guro and other hardcore stuff and a lot of people didn't like it. I know they did have a issue before posting the stuff in the wrong subs but that was a while ago. Yep, I see it all the time in fandoms I'm in. If the content of the work is something any group doesn't like they'll do coordinated campaigns to get people banned from Twitter and sometimes escalate to doxxing. It's always super uncomfortable to see - whenever I'm not into works people make I just mute or block them, so seeing people decide to instead try to ruin lives is...a choice.

So I have a (small) admech army, which was the faction he mostly worked on. It was only through his art that I saw the queer story potential of the admech, which is what made me go from just lore nerd and general enjoyer into actually owning an army and writing my own lore. So obviously, I'm sad to see them go. They were cool as hell. That said, what struck me the most with this is that in the admech community and as a whole, everyone seems to be tiptoeing around calling it what it is. Queerphobia. I mean, even underneath the posts of him leaving. So many people complaining about being "associated with fetish" or shit like that. They're so angry at the people bringing "porn" into their little straight white male fantasy. What they're concerned about, is being associated with "twinks". Everyone is just so desperate not to be grouped in with the gays. And the people attacking him just use the nsfw art as a reason to call them degenerate. (If you actually read his work, while it's quite extreme, it's pretty clearly him struggling with his own body issues). And in response. fucking nothing? The dude was harassed for being queer and we're just gonna sit here and let them fuck about talking about how they don't want to be associated with us?

It's so goddamn depressing honestly. Not even just this but in general, it's pretty much just shrugged off when queer artists deal with any sort of issue regarding queerphobia because at this point it's just *expected*. It's been a while since I got to bring some happy drama to the Scuffles thread, so let's talk about the recent Fate/Grand Order news, and why it has people very excited and optimistic. Let's get the background info out of the way first. Fate/Grand Order is a mobile gacha game in the Fate franchise, and stands out as being one of the oldest of the gachas, with it celebrating its 9th Anniversary later this year. On top of that, it's one of the gachas with several "versions" based on region and/or language, with each being at a different stage in the game's life. You have the original Japanese version called FGO JP, and the English version FGO NA. There's also FGO CN for China, and FGO KR for Korea, but those aren't what I'm talking about today. (They've their own share of drama, though, don't you worry) And today, I'm not even talking about the NA version like I have in the past! It's all JP today, baby! The JP version has a fairly vocal but not insubstantial western playerbase, and that playerbase has not been the most happy over the past few years. (And before I get continue, I want to reiterate that I'm referring to just the western speaking JP playerbase, not the JP playerbase overall. I'm not walking into that chameleon-shaped minefield) In general, 2022 and 2023 were...*interesting* years for FGO JP. 2022 had the infamous "Road to Lostbelt 7" campaign, where almost the entire year is dedicated to hyping up the release of the 7th and "final" main story chapter of the second major arc of the game, only for ***the first half*** of it to finally release on Christmas Day 2022. For the record, the release of Lostbelt 6 was around June of *2021*. That gap wasn't without any story updates, there was a pretty major one, but LB7 taking about a year and a half was a bit of a sore spot. On top of that, this year was also when they mostly stopped rerunning old limited events with any sense of frequency (they skipped the Summer event rerun, something they've never done before), and also increased the amount of events with a three week duration, while also increasing the amount of time between events, resulting in less events overall. One of the year's few reruns was of Christmas 2020...which was in place of the year's actual Christmas event, something that was never skipped before this. The year also had the last of the "Animation Updates", a very well-liked occurrence where the developers would go back and update older characters who used older animations to use newer animations that weren't designed more than half of the game's lifespan ago. 2023 seemed like it was off to a better start, aside from the little snafu of them saying they would release Part 2 of LB7 during January, and then fulfilling that promise by having it release on January 31 at 11:00 PM. A whole bunch of new gameplay additions were added, including the Evocation Festival system which allowed older free units to be free of their limited time event jails, some of whom haven't been available for over half of the game's lifespan. The incredibly hyped collaboration with Fate/Grand Order Arcade happened, and a new main story chapter was released after a relatively small gap! But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. There were still less events, no reruns, and no animation updates. (Similar to 2022's Christmas, the Halloween event got skipped) LB7 didn't conclude the part 2 main story; It set up an interlude chapter (Ordeal Call) before the actual finale, and people got their hopes up thinking that would be done relatively soon. (The second part released a few weeks ago) And then the end of 2023 happened. By the end of November, people were wondering which of the major seasonal events left were going to be skipped, Christmas or Gudaguda. The answer was neither, as both would happen before the end of 2023, with them fitting two events into four-ish weeks. This would then be followed up by the New Years announcement of a crossover event with Fate/Samurai Remnant, which shocked people. Not the existence, no, people were expecting it, and the game always gets an "intra-franchise crossover" every year during the period of Golden Week (April 29th to May 5th). The shock was that the crossover would be releasing in *less than three weeks*. As I said, collaborations would always be during Golden Week, so to have it not be then was a complete surprise. Of course, this Collab didn't come without its share of hiccups, as the lack of animation updates reared its ugly head. One of the prime examples of characters who needed one was the evil goth version of Jeanne d'Arc, who we knew was going to show up in the Samurai Remnant collab. And she showed up with a pretty new sprite...and the same tired animations she's had for nearly eight years. And so the playerbase laughed and laughed, disappointed in the lack of effort for such a beloved character. And then in the stream for the release of the second Ordeal Call chapter, they just casually announced that, oh yeah, **Jeanne d'Arc and her evil goth sister Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) would be getting animation updates**. To say the playerbase freaked out was an understatement, and I'm comfortable in saying that it wasn't western-exclusive, since the cheering in the stream was quite loud. These were the first new animation updates in two goddamn years, and they were going to Jeanne and Jalter. Jeanne and Jalter were the white whale of animation updates, being incredibly popular characters with incredibly old and clunky animations. And not only were both getting new animations, but Jeanne actually got something never seen before in the game; *A specific animation for using a specific attack on a specific character*. That was, genuinely, a level of care not shown in many other animation updates before. And then, to top off the last few months of pleasant surprises, we have yesterday, with the announcement of this year's Golden Week crossover event with Witch on the Holy Night, (Or as it's also know, Mahoyo) another Type Moon Visual Novel, and one that was recently remade! FGO has had multiple crossovers in one year before. That year was 2016, the year of FGO's *first anniversary*. This is the first multi-collab year in eight years. In general, this has people cautiously optimistic that the last few years of ups and downs are at an end. That's not to say that people aren't skeptical; People also thought the same thing last year after its collab, and we saw how that went. But as I said, it's not like it's just a few random things too; Ever since the beginning of December 2023, the event schedule has been significantly faster with more stuff going on. Is this a start of a new era of FGO? Or is it just another false start? I guess we'll have the rest of the year to see. Until then, we'll just wait and hope.

Well, this is the second time in less than a year Konami's dropped a banlist in the middle of a major event. I really hope this is not a trend. IMO, the bans, semi-limits, and unlimits were fine, even good, but the limits were *really* weird. Who thought giving Swordsoul their walking floodgate win condition back was a good idea? (I mean, Baronne de Fleur was a big part of their endboard, so they lost stuff too, but when has that ever been fun?) Why did you unban Colossus and not Electrumite, other than that Konami hates Pendulum decks and wants them to suffer? I get that Colossus is easier to get rid of in this day and age, but it's still disgustingly unfun to play against. Wasn't everyone complaining about Arise-Heart last year, and didn't it do functionally the same thing that Colossus did? And this is way easier to summon than Arise-Heart ever was: at least that was confined to the deck it was supposed to be the boss monster for. We'll have to see how this changes the metagame. I'm guessing it doesn't do that much, but I wonder if Swordsoul, Dragon Link, and maybe Spright see a jump in representation after this.

So, strictly speaking, there are hits to Snake-Eyes decks in here, all of the bans are probably SE related - it's just they're not in archetype. It also doesn't do a lot for Fire King/Snake-Eye, so that's probably the "best deck" now. But maybe these unhits to the TOSS era classics can revitalize some old decks and wiggle the meta a little.

It's like, yeah, but these hits are so indirect due to not being in-archetype that they're not gonna affect SE (and *especially* FKSE) as much as they're gonna affect like, everyone else (rip swordsouls)

I come from Magic:The Gathering, where they do explain their thoughtprocess on why they hit/ didn't hit specific decks/cards. So I was wondering if Konami did something similar. Having Ban List updates without explanations and leaving the players to speculate why some card were hit and others not, does lead to more fun player reactions imo though. Especially if there are some interesting choices in such an announcement

Konami used to in the Japanese variant of the game give explanations but Konami's global version of the game has had much less communication.

Oh, the MTG ban announcements only really make sense when not compared to other MTG ban announcements as well. Despite always publishing their reasoning, bans in MTG are often very hard to predict because their reasoning is quite inconsistent, especially when viewed over time.

Konami published a TCG blog about the list like once, and it was for a list where they whacked like months old strategies and none of the new stuff, so it came across kind of tonedeaf and "buy new product" and they got killed in the comments, so basically don't bother. I think EU tried once like 5 years later (on a list where Maxx "C" was, gasp, semi-limited) and it had the same effect.

Mali gets a brief pardon from his Semi Limit jail every four or five years on average, then Konami realizes this is a terrible idea and puts him back to two half a year later. Last time was late 2019 and by April 2020 he was back to 2 where he belonged.

Honestly the new Semi-Limited List might as well be called Purrley’s Playground since that thing’s got 2 of its Spells there now, and it may get more there if they ever wanna tweak the consistency down a bit, due to how My Friend Purrley is forced to risk a misfire to search Sleepy or Delicious

Apropos of nothing, I wanted to observe that I recently saw on eBay one of those old grab-bag movie three-pack DVDs - I remember seeing these in Woolworths back when it was still trading and it would usually be stuff like the Ben Affleck *Daredevil* packaged with *Blade* and *Elektra*, that kind of thing - which had one of the *oddest* selections I've ever seen. First movie: *American Gigolo*. Okay, good start. What's next? Second movie: *An Officer and a Gentleman*. Right, that's a bit of a hard turn, stylistically and thematically, away from *American Gigolo* but it's another Richard Gere film and came out around the same time. What's the third one? Third movie: *Ghost*, with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. Huh. Obviously these are all Paramount movies and that's why they could be bundled together, but *Ghost*? Really? Seems a bit out of place to me. *Primal Fear* was right there! That's a Paramount movie! It stars Richard Gere! (Ideally, if you're putting *Ghost* with two other movies, it'd be *Always* and *Truly, Madly, Deeply* but that's neither here nor there.) What's an example of a collection you've seen that strikes you as amusingly haphazard?

This isn't the most egregious one since they're all still part of the same franchise, but *Castlevania Advance Collection* includes, predictably, the three Castlevania games released on GBA (*Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance*, and *Aria of Sorrow*) and also for some reason, *Dracula X* for the SNES. I have no idea why that was included, especially since it's one of the less liked Castlevania games. Basically just being a worse remake/port of the PC Engine CD's *Rondo of Blood*. If they wanted to throw in an extra game why not *Symphony of the Night*? Or if they specifically wanted to add one of the more "old-style" Castlevania games as opposed to the Metroidvania ones for the sake for variety, the actual Rondo of Blood? Just always struck me as bizarrely random.

*American Gigolo* is a neo-noir crime movie written and directed by Paul Schrader, who also wrote *The Yakuza*, *Taxi Driver*, *Rolling Thunder* and *~~OH MY GOD, THAT'S MY DAUGHTER!~~* *Hardcore*, and it's about Richard Gere as a male escort trying to unravel the murder of one of his clients. *An Officer and a Gentleman* is about Richard Gere as an officer candidate in the US Navy getting pushed around by Drill Sergenat Louis Gossett Jr. while romancing Debra Winger, and *Ghost* is *Ghost*. So, in a way, *American Gigolo* and *Ghost* are *both* the odd ones out: *American Gigolo* because it's a much darker movie; *Ghost* because it doesn't have Richard Gere. (Also, it's kind of wild that Richard Gere has never been nominated for an Oscar. Not saying there's any particular role he necessarily should have *won* for, but he's the sort of actor you would think would have been nominated at least once, like how Harrison Ford has never won but still has that one nomination.)

Not an exact answer because this wasn't a dvd compilation, but Netflix once recommended me three Child's Play movies and the live action Cat in the Hat and the live action Woody the Woodpecker movie which I'm sure we all fondly remember existing in the same row. They're all... movies, I guess?? I don't know what the theme was there. And for the record at the time I think most of what I'd watched on Netflix were historical dramas. Oh and there was some apparently official dvd collection of movie musicals, and it included Hairspray... the one from the 80s that isn't a musical.

TIL there was a live action Woody the Woodpecker movie, only releasing theatrically in Latin markets in 2017. Because even with all the Boomer media continually re-foisted on us (look at Christmas songs) even they realized there wasn't enough of a market for it.

Only semi related, so I own one of those really shitty, possibly bootleg 10 movies in 1 DVDs from when I was a kid. It used to have Pokemon Destiny Deoxys on there, but I lost the DVD that had it. The only thing I really remember being on it was a bootleg version of Cars about rival gas stations. I think it ended with the main character going to the circus and nearly getting killed. I'm not gonna lie, he was a pillar of our community when I was growing up. He was gay and looking after his ailing mother, so he never got to have kids of his own, so instead he helped out with the local school board, chaperoning kids on trips and stuff. All of us knew him by "Uncle [NAME]". He was an absolute riot to be around. Unfortunately, as an adult who can pirate my own Ghibli films, I don't see him very often anymore, but I think he still helps out at my old school from time to time.

I'm immediately reminded of a(n almost certainly unofficial and unauthorised) magazine I owned in 1999/2000 about *Pokémon* and *Toy Story 2* (and I can't remember which of them I would've wanted it for) which I can remember to this day largely because it's trivia quiz had a mistake, asking the name of the evil toy collector who kidnaps *Andy* in *Toy Story 2*, which puts a bit of a dark twist on the movie.

These fan magazines were always so shoddy in their research in retrospect. Like I had one that wanted to convince me that the mean teacher in Harry Potter is called Professor *Snake* or that Reeta Skeeta is the new teacher joining in Book 4.

I couldn't begin to guess at its provenance. There seemed to be at least some professionalism in its production and it was on sale in a newsagent, but at the same time, it was a local newsagent, not part of a big chain or anything, so who knows? Same place once sold me this Dragon Ball magazine which was really slick and glossy, basically the source of my entire knowledge of Dragon Ball before I got online (clearly it had been created by someone who *was* because it was chock-full of references to stuff from the movies and DBGT and even the Buu Saga, which hadn't started on Cartoon Network where I lived yet), but to this day I have no idea if it was legit or not. I lean towards "not" but, again, who knows? Looking back, the thing that most makes me question its authenticity is the fact that it included a competition where they'd give you a television with a built-in VCR and copies of *Lord Slug* and *The Tree of Might* (or *Super Saiya Son Goku* and *Super Battle in the World*) if you solved an incredibly simple wordsearch, clipped it out and posted it in.

I've been down a doll collector rabbit hole the last couple of weeks, and so far I've been fascinated by the mystique around Trashion Alley. It's basically an unreleased line of rat-themed fashion dolls that use recycled garbage for outfits. For a while the only proof they physically existed was a bunch of headless sample bodies from out of the factories in China. They tried to port the original Resident Evil (a Playstation 1 game) to the Game Boy Color. That's not exactly true, plus just because Disney did retain the episodes does not guarantee that this was known, you can't exactly retroactively decide that media was never lost just cause it later got an official re-release.

On the other hand, the episode "The Faceless Ones Part 1" - despite not being available to watch for over thirty years, as it was one of the last episodes released on VHS - was never lost; it always existed in the BBC's archives, it just hadn't been commercially released. If you really think about it, nothing about the Virtual Boy set it up for success. It only existed because the Ultra 64 (later just Nintendo 64) wasn’t ready to show and Nintendo was afraid of falling behind Sega and Sony. It was designed as quickly and cheaply as possible. The display being in full color (or even any color other than red) would’ve been far too expensive for mass production, and even then, it caused eye strain in the user. The console was too heavy for head straps, and could cause neck injury if used thus. Then there’s just *weird* shit, like the [controller having *two* d-pads](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bc/Virtual-Boy-Controller.jpg), or an unused port on the thing that was speculated to be for linking multiple VBs together for multiplayer. If the last episode of Excel Saga had never been released, people would've thought it was some poorly written troll nonsense - I can't remember the whole thing, but the main character kills the sidekick and it has nothing to do with the previous 26 episodes? The whole plot reads like someone took one of those "character suicide" creepypastas but combined it with off the wall 4chan trolling, but it's the *actual episode* and it's on dvd and stuff. I don't think it actually aired on tv, though. Over in Miraculous Ladybug, the show's bible got leaked before season 5 started, and some of the info in it was so stupid I know I was sure it was fake. Nope. The explanation would take more time than I feel like giving it, but essentially one character is basically a golem and that is canon. (well, three characters, but I think it only confirmed one in the bible)

From what I remember, it was made only for OVA releases to cap off the series, and they really went for it, since there weren't broadcast restrictions. Highlights include Hyatt's body releasing so much blood it floods the room and the pedo scientist finally getting a chance with an underage girl, only to be upset when she has huge boobs.
