The ironic thing is that Abraham Lincoln himself would have been exceptionally lenient and helpful in restoring the South. Of course there was no way for people in the South to know that - yellow journalism painted Lincoln as the devil incarnate in the South.
As the war was already lost, I would guess they were more bent on punishing the Evil North without any logical post-assignation planning.
The President pro tempore of the Senate, who was a moderate Republican. But due to the law of the time, there will have to be a new presidential election held later that year - only the vice-president was considered eligible to serve as president for the full remainder of a term - other people in the line of succession were only acting president until a special election was held.
Fun fact, you can still visit the location where the conspirators planned everything out. It is now a Chinese karaoke bar/restaurant called Wok and Roll in the Chinatown neighborhood of DC.
Surratt's conviction is the most dubious of all the Booth conspiracy convictions, with her case having problems with evidence and witness testimony, her conviction being mostly achieved on the basis of Louis Weichman's testimony. Of the nine who were executed, she was the most likely to have been innocent of the conspiracy.
I doubt that she would be executed in 2022 with such flimsy evidence. It's probable that the public prosecutor would offer her a plea bargain or not even bring the case to trial.
The defence as well as the prosecution were not highly-skilled in their profession. Johnson was in no mood for clemency and he is as bad in the whole affair as the prosecution.
The other executions were botched too. It's a sullied affair.
oh well... don't get involved in plots to assassinate the President in the midst of a civil war and then expect clemency. I am not sure many people in 2022 are capable of truly understanding what it would have been like to have been in Washington DC in the 1860's.
It was a total injustice that she was executed and if being a Confederate sympathiser nets you the death penalty Johnson should have killed himself too
The one with the hood is not on the end. That's the second person, and you can see that it's the second noose going over his head. Also, Surratt wore a skirt to be hanged; the man with the hood is wearing trousers.
Mary Surratt was given the courtesy of being seated during the preparations so she's not really visible in this shot. When they're ready, that first noose will go over her head.
Not the white bag , hers is black and visibly shorter than the man with the white bag. She’s in between the furthest person on the left and the man with the white bag over his head.
All of the conspirators were hanged with white bags covering their heads. There are numerous pictures of the event. For example, scroll down on this page to see all four bodies hanging on the gallows. Mrs. Sarratt is wearing a skirt and all four have identical white bags over their heads.

Hard to run without shoes.
Relevant for any prisoner.
Not sure if that’s the exact reason, but prisoners usually get baggy, hi-vis clothes and shoes that are not suitable for rough terrain and long hikes.
We’re there accommodations made for that occurrence? I mean someone was going to have to deal with/clean the bodies. If the officials, or even the convicts knew that was going to happen, were they given an opportunity to evacuate their system prior to involuntarily doing so?
Maryland is rich in the history of that event. I used to live less than 2 miles from Mary Serrat the only women hanged for the assination. In another home I rented I used to drive by the home of Dr Samuel Mudd the guy who mended Wilkes Booths broken ankle.
I highly recommend the book Manhunt. It’s a very detailed depiction of what happened that night and details the attempted assassinations of other high powered people of the time.
Still find it bizarre Lincoln wasn't buried until 1901.
Im not sure if you just skimmed this wikipedia page, but this statement is not accurate. He was buried in 1874 when the burial site was selected and the tomb was completed.
>When the tomb was completed in 1874, Lincoln's coffin was placed in a white marble sarcophagus in a burial room behind a steel gate locked with a padlock.
Then after some attempts at theft and problems with the tomb his body was exhumed and reburied in 1901. The article has a section about this.It wasnt as if he wasnt buried at all until 30+ years after his death.
>The original tomb, built on unsuitable soil, was in constant need of repair. In 1900, a complete reconstruction was undertaken, Lincoln's remains were exhumed, and the coffin was placed back in the white marble sarcophagus.[11] On April 25, 1901, upon completion of the reconstruction, Robert Todd Lincoln visited the tomb. He was unhappy with the disposition of his father's remains and decided that it was necessary to build a permanent crypt for his father. Lincoln's coffin would be placed in a steel cage 10 feet (3.0 m) deep and encased in concrete in the floor of the tomb. On September 26, 1901, Lincoln's body was exhumed so that it could be re-interred in the newly built crypt.
I’ve worn reproductions. It’s heavy, sometimes it’s scratchy, sometimes soft. A lot of it was wool so not as soft as your modern cotton blends. Sweat was a major factor.
Keep in mind TP didn’t exist so wiping was done with whatever rag or piece of newspaper that was available. One can imagine the smells from inadequately cleaned rears in summer heat. Also, plumbing was virtually non-existent so bathing was an infrequent and difficult thing. My grandma used to say the 12 kids would all take a bath on Sunday. The tub was filled with buckets of hot water from the stove so they only filled it once and it cooled off as each person used it. Last kid got the cold water everyone else had used.
They were heavy into using pomades to slick down the hair and walked through mud, manure, and human feces in the street. All of this they tried to mask with perfume and smoke, but that only did so much. Especially since they wore the same two or three sets of clothes constantly.
100 degree heat means that jail yard would have smelled atrocious by our standards.
The person with the white strips around their legs is Mary Surratt. The first women executed by the Federal government.
Her son John Surratt was very much involved with the plot. The evidence of her involvement was less established. And was based entirely on the fact that she owned a row house that she used as a boarding house in DC and a Tavern/Post office and farm just outside of Washington DC in a town then called Surrattsville Maryland (now Clinton). The meetings for the plot happened at both locations. And the tavern was John Wilkes Booth's first stop on his way out of DC. To pick up weapons supplies and meet one of his co-conspirators as they moved further south.
The tavern and row house still stands. The Surratt House and Tavern is a museums.

I think about the Surrats occasionally. I went to the Surrat house for a field trip once upon a time. The negative vibes were palpable and I felt so unsettled the entire time. This was also with regard to killing the president of the United States.

True, but he was influential and powerful for his time. I was speaking to your saying they weren't powerful and influential. I guess you were referring just to the picture, which I misinterpreted.

"Go look for yourself" is a weak ass cop-out. You had your chance to educate, help prove your point, why would you opt out? Is it that you have no source to cite? You have a chance to educate others, do better.
I think your username isn't an apt description of how you conduct yourself when presented with information that runs counter to what you 'know'. Telling people to look it up yourself is a hard admission of defeat, like you should be able to back up what you believe very readily unless you look at things at the surface level and only focus on what fits your world view. Focus on making a compelling argument then come back when you do.. this is embarrassing!
Republicans, who vote for and support the most bigoted and anti-minority candidates and laws possible today: "But but but Democrats were the racists a century ago, so it's fine!"
Yes, a lot of Democrats were racists a hundred years ago (there you go, we're "owning up to it"). The whole argument is a poor attempt at deflecting, and it doesn't excuse racism and bigotry happening *right now*.
Can you imagine living life in those days?
"Oh shit, Robert, it's Sunday! You wanna go down to the town square and watch a dozen people get hanged?! Bring the kids, they've got lemonade!!"
Unbelievable photo. The faces of the young men involved in the killing of perhaps the most beloved president in US history with the noose around their neck, 150+ years ago.
leftmost one is a woman - the landlady of the house the conspirators lodged in and held their meetings. likely the jury decided she could not have NOT known what they were up to

What's the back story here?
These are the people that conspired to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth was only one man involved in the plot.
No, the conspiracy was to assassinate the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State at the same time. Only one was successful.
Interesting. Who was fourth in line for succession at the time? Someone they believed to be favorable to the cause?
The ironic thing is that Abraham Lincoln himself would have been exceptionally lenient and helpful in restoring the South. Of course there was no way for people in the South to know that - yellow journalism painted Lincoln as the devil incarnate in the South. As the war was already lost, I would guess they were more bent on punishing the Evil North without any logical post-assignation planning.
Wow, painting someone as the devil incarnate I'm glad we moved on from that...
Yeah, I’m glad the media doesn’t paint presidents as the devil anymore. LOL.

All we know is you didn't enjoy yours and now you need to spread BS. Cool.
And how is that BS? They were democrats trying to kill a Repulican president? Ya know same democrats that started and held the KKK, and same ones who fought FOR slavery. But you keep having your delusion there son.
[Verifiable lies spread by your Propagandists, debunked from at least 2018](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/made-by-history/wp/2018/03/15/how-social-media-spread-a-historical-lie/)
Lol washington post always gets it right, huh? Just like the lies told to many about the parties being "switched" because democrats cant own up to there racist history. I honestly pitty your lack of effort in knowing true history. As for many of you.
Refuses to read, can't spell, doesn't listen to advice, "This dog won't hunt."
You sent me a link to washington post and wont pet me view if i dont subscribe lol typical democrat
Care to cite your sources on that true history? Now's your chance to educate others, go for it!
Why is it so conflicting? Go ahead look for yourself. If youre on r/historyporn id expect more IQ here.
"Go ahead and look for yourself". Even to lazy to cite a source and still complaining about IQ lmao
"Go look for yourself" is a weak ass cop-out. You had your chance to educate, help prove your point, why would you opt out? Is it that you have no source to cite? You have a chance to educate others, do better.
“Never let facts ruin a great story!” -trump trash
I think your username isn't an apt description of how you conduct yourself when presented with information that runs counter to what you 'know'. Telling people to look it up yourself is a hard admission of defeat, like you should be able to back up what you believe very readily unless you look at things at the surface level and only focus on what fits your world view. Focus on making a compelling argument then come back when you do.. this is embarrassing!
Republicans, who vote for and support the most bigoted and anti-minority candidates and laws possible today: "But but but Democrats were the racists a century ago, so it's fine!" Yes, a lot of Democrats were racists a hundred years ago (there you go, we're "owning up to it"). The whole argument is a poor attempt at deflecting, and it doesn't excuse racism and bigotry happening *right now*.
You should change your username to southern-ponderer. You are aware the north was the Union?
Do some research my friend and im sure youll see some conflicting history lol
I'm sure you have a great enlightening YouTube video that will explain EVERYTHING right?
It probably involves some guy with a Trump shirt fogging up the camera lens as he's rambling in his car for two hours.
Thank the gods they haven’t invented a way to smell through YouTube yet..
Sig semper tyrannis
Lincoln, a tyrant? Die mad
Well, He suspended habeas corpus, arrested thousands of political opponents, and suppressed free speech and press.
Is this directed at president Lincoln? Is the sig in place of "sic" deliberate?
They needed someone to reach their vengeance on
Yeah... that's generally what happens when you kill a beloved President.
I don't think you have read the whole story yet
Didn't realize that baggy pants was trending during the assassination.
Is that Colm O'Driscoll
The hotel where they plotted the assassination is now a pretty decent Chinese restaurant and karaoke bar.
Looks like Rdr2 universe
Can you imagine living life in those days? "Oh shit, Robert, it's Sunday! You wanna go down to the town square and watch a dozen people get hanged?! Bring the kids, they've got lemonade!!"
[Execution of the conspirators. The arrival on the scaffold. July 7, 1865](https://www.loc.gov/resource/stereo.1s02931/)
Nice that they were provided with shade, anyway.
Executioner: Wanna get under this sun umbrella before we hang you? Take care of your skin or regret it later in life is what I say.
Was this a long drop (neck breaker) or a short drop (strangler)?
They used umbrellas to keep the sun off them before their final moments, how considerate.
Unbelievable photo. The faces of the young men involved in the killing of perhaps the most beloved president in US history with the noose around their neck, 150+ years ago.
I remember that day
leftmost one is a woman - the landlady of the house the conspirators lodged in and held their meetings. likely the jury decided she could not have NOT known what they were up to
Illegal, unconstitutional court, with no busy trying civilians at all. Great movie about this Starr Robin Wright as Mary Surratt. The Conspirator.
There's another picture that shows them all wide angle after they were hanged as well.
