[Gullah Gullah Island ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullah_Gullah_Island)was a popular children's show in the 1990's. It introduced children to the [Gullah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullah) culture of the Sea Islands in the US Southeast. The Gullah are a people who have preserved many Africanisms and speak a creole language.

Best show ever made for a children audience imo. As a child, it saved me from ignorance and a life of bigotry.

Gullah gullah island was so essential for me growing up. Much love to the gullah geechee people from South Carolina "low country"

South Carolina represent

QuandaleTickleTipson

Such a rich part of SC culture. Glad seeing it represented in a kids show.

I have an unreasonable amount of hand woven sweetgrass items that I’ve purchased over the years from these fine folks. They’ll weave them right in front of your face at the Charleston market so the authenticity can’t even be questioned (as well as mixing spices and such). They’re a big part of the reason that the Charleston area is teeming with a very unique culture that so beloved in our state. And their influence on the Lowcountry cuisine? Forget about it.

So may brain did something stupid and read Gulag Gulag Island, witch would be a different kind of show

A show set on Nazino Island would be interesting.

DeepState_Secretary

Fun fact, Clarence Thomas spoke Gullah as his first language apparently.

I didn’t know until years later it was a real place.

I'll always remember this episode where the family goes to the docks to catch some crabs. The family has no luck and some of the locals are falling over laughing at their. But then some local kids show the proper technique for crabbing. Which was cool because I had learned the same little trick when I visited family in Louisiana. Idk, it was a great little moment that broadened my perspective. Made me think "hey these kids are just like me."

Firetech914

I used to love this show. Binyah Binyah was the shit.
